Jack Francis
Hi all, Weird question but would love to hear your opinions. What category of light would mercury/sodium vapour light fall under? Not incandescent/fluorescent but could they be Chemoluminescent? I doubt it, but hopefully you have an idea of what categories I'm going for. Hope this make sense; any help appreciated. Jack. Daniel Klockenkemper
Mercury and sodium vapor are both high-pressure gas-discharge lamps: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas-discharge_lamp#Types

Not to make things overcomplicated, but there are two types of sodium vapour lighting. One, the classic bright orange type, is low-pressure; the other is salmon pink in colour and is very similar but for a higher internal pressure. The mechanism by which the orange light becomes pink without using different materials is quite an interesting bit of physics called pressure broadening.
