Premium Member Max Jacoby Posted July 8, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted July 8, 2004 I think a top dop on a Hollywood film gets around $5000 per day. Last year I worked on a film where I was told the dop got ?3000 per day
Premium Member Laurent Andrieux Posted July 8, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted July 8, 2004 In France it depends on the king of thing : commercials, feature lenghts,... It's usually paid by weeks on feature lengths, by day on commercials. They usually get nearly nothing for short movies. You have a rate per day in video. Jeff Tanner
I think a top dop on a Hollywood film gets around $5000 per day. The "top" DP's get whatever they ask for. There is no standard. I know of one DP who's rates for commercial work are $10,000/shoot day, $7,500/prep or scout days and $5,000 for travel days. On top of that he gets 4 star hotels, flies only first class, has a driver and gets $150/day per diem. Just as we all set our own rates, so do the big boys. Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted July 8, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted July 8, 2004 Hi, At the other end of the scale it can actually be quite hard to get paid at all. Often you are a freelance individual working for a very large and powerful company; it sometimes seems like it's optional that they even bother to pay you. I'm not getting paid yet and I've got a LOT more knowhow than a lot of DP's I've seen. I guess I need to beef up my reel.
Premium Member Adam Frisch FSF Posted July 14, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted July 14, 2004 I think I heard somewhere that Ballhaus got $25.000 a week for Gangs Of New York plus overtime. Doesn't sound massive until you start adding up how many weeks they shot... After 5 months of that day in day out it kind of adds up!
Mitch Gross
And don't forget that the production also rented the camera packages from him and likely employed some of his sons who are also in the business.
