I've got an ancient Miller Professional head on an aluminium round leg Samson/Quickset 7305 that's my best tripod for small cameras. I use it with my Nizo 4056 Super-8 and Sony TRV-30 miniDV. I've got a much more robust O'Connor 50D and various 100mm bowl wood tripods, top hats, etc. for my Arri 2A/C. I've gotten compliments on how smooth my camera work is on miniDV - people don't expect real slick pans and tilts with miniDV since most prosumer "digital" heads are in truth junk. They are pretty decent priced for a 50mm half bowl, which in my opinion is really important for fast levelling. And they can go as low as 22mm, which is nice. I use them with a 503 head, which makes it a little pricey, but I really recommend the sticks. I have used the tripod with both super 8mm cameras (nikon r8) and video cameras (consumer, canon GL2, Panasonic DVX100, Sony Z1U) and I don't have any problems at all.
