Cleaning a Mirror Shutter

Hello,

 

I have a mirror shutter that has "Spider Webs" on it. And by that I mean hairline scratches that develop on metal surfaces when someone cleans them. I can assume somone must have taken a paper towel or tissue paper to it...

 

The question is:

 

Can a mirror shutter be polished back to new? A car can be buffed when this happens to its surface after a lot of cleaning. But it would be hard to bring a buffer to a small shutter.

 

Does anyone have any theories on how to restore a shutter to its prime?

 

I can't imagine having a thousand little cleaning marks can be good for the reflection it is sending to my viewfinder.

The mirror is extremely delicate and scratches easily. Avoid cleaning it at all costs. The damage is not repairable short of getting another one.

Even with the scratches though, I'm sure your mirror is completely usable, and will have very little effect on viewing, and off course no effect on film.

It's not a matter of polishing. Typically it's a coating. The coating probably scratched off.

 

Last I checked, this guy, would resurface mirrors.

 

Otherwise, you may have to look for another shutter.

If you can still see, focus and frame fine through the viewfinder, I would not mess with it. If it is dirty, clean it VERY gently. But other than that, I would not mess with it.
