Premium Member Chris Keth Posted March 14, 2007 Premium Member Share Posted March 14, 2007 I'm checking out DoF calculators with the intent to buy one in the near future, but I've never used either of the major ones in depth. Which one do you guys prefer and why? Does the kelly wheel provide for different circles of confusion like the samcine so it adapts easily to various formats? Are both quick to use? Durability issues with either? I'd like my expensive piece of plastic to last. Thanks all!

Delorme Jean-Marie
hi i use samcine but realy when there is a need to put 2 actors in the deps of field, when the director doesn't want a rack of focus. so the dop asks me at what stop we should work. otherwise it's too scary, most of the time you have barely nothing, nowing that it's no use for whatever calculation tool. i prefer the samcine bcause i stick a photocopy of the inchs wheel at the back of the metric wheel so i only carry and baught 1 tool. they are all acurate but think about the most solid and easy tool to grab quickly and throw as quickly to your bag. Eden Lagaly-Faynot
Bonjour, I was wondering about this too. Once I've worked with an AC who was using tables : he said it was very accurate but I don't know if it's as easy as wheels to manipulate, I mean on the field in a hurry. Since it's alot cheaper to print tables, I think it could be a good solution for a beginning. Any advices? Any opinions? Thanks.
Premium Member Chris Keth Posted March 17, 2007 Author Premium Member Share Posted March 17, 2007 The main thing I am wondering is if the Kelly wheels have a good way for you to choose your circle of confusion so it will work well with any format. As advertised, I can either get a samcine for a lot of money and have everything I will ever need or get three kelly wheels to accomodate multiple formats for even more money. Surely a kelly wheel for each format isn't required....?
Delorme Jean-Marie
yes but 2 kelly wil be needed to match metric and feet as far as i know (as well as samcine does) i don't know about the tables indeed the samcine is greate bcause sometime the dop will give you the f stop without the the shutter and filter correction, and you will have to do it. my 2 cents

You should be able to set them in feet or meters. http://www.cookeoptics.com/cooke.nsf/product/dfc http://www.arri.com/infodown/cam/ti/stt_e_m.pdf http://www.panavision.com/tools.php http://www.dofmaster.com/ http://johnhendry.com/gadget/dof.php http://jkor.com/peter/dof.html
