Looking for a way to create image distortion

I have a shoot coming up, which director really like to create the banded or wavey images.

 

I always believe the best way to do it would be have the set built in banded shape, but He would like a movement apply to the banded or wavey images.

 

so far the best way i could think of, is the use of tilt & shift lenses on banded set to enhance it's misshape. but i don't know how distorted it can get by using tilt & shift lenses. still need to test it out.

 

would really like someone to help me out here, because it seems like some kind of special effects but not wanted to be done in post. so would be very much appreciating any suggestions.

Maybe a rippled piece of glass in a 6x6 mattebox and then slowly move it during the shot (there will be limits to how far you can move it.)

John Mathieson used swing & tilt lenses on Matchstick men in the scene where Nicholas Cage wakes up in hospital.

I think they also did some stuff in post though!

 

You could have a look at that.

 

Alternatively you could try mirrors, y'know the carnival "house of fun type" I suppose it depends on how crazy you need to get!

 

Davids suggestion sounds the most practical though!
