Matt Pacini
I'm not talking about diffusion filters, but the filters to simulat fog. Has anyone here used one, and how realistic is the effect? It seems like there would be no way it would look convincing, but the little picture you see on the front of the Cokin filter, for instance, looks pretty good (haven't seen one blown up though) Matt Pacini
Mitch Gross
I find that a Tiffen Double Fog actually looks more like real fog.
Premium Member Greg Gross Posted September 22, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted September 22, 2004 I just looked at two examples of fog effect(Hoya A,B) I was not impressed, not realistic to me. I have used Tiffen filters in professional photography and have always been pretty happy with results. Only other filters for fog I can think of right now are Schneider's,pricey but good. I don't have occassion to use fog filters,I wonder maybe if some versions of soft filters might look better prove more realistic? Oh!, I forgot Harrison's. Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted September 22, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted September 22, 2004 Any filter isn't going to create the dimensional quality of fog or smoke. Double Fogs, which are part Fog combined with part Low-Con, come the closest. That and the new Smoque filter from Tiffen. There are also some graduated Fog filters made. Premium Member Laurent Andrieux Posted September 22, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted September 22, 2004 I like Tiffen, not Cokin, lI ike double fogs, but I figured out that if you have smoke on the set as well, or shoot by real natural fogs, the filters look more realistic even, for a marked fog effect. Matt Pacini
Thanks for all the advice, gang. That's good advice, shooting some real stuff in there. I think I'll try that; use my fog machine to just blow a bit of whispy stuff into the foreground. Matt Pacini
Premium Member Laurent Andrieux Posted September 22, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted September 22, 2004 Exactly, you can also materialize it with light beams.
