Niki Mundo
NWFF's JK 103 Optical Printer for 16mm and Super 8mm Film. Used as a telecine it captures frames individually onto a G4 Hard drive. It captures about two mnutes of footage per hour (shot 24fps).. The optical printer is an age-old device for printing the image from one roll of film onto another roll. This allows for multiple special effects techniques including multiple exposures, step and skip printing for speed changes and strobing effects, color effects, and traveling matte tricks. My questions are.. 1. At $150 to transfer 60 minutes worth of 16mm negative seems like a good deal to me (onto miniDV). How good can I expect it to look since I have will have no training outside of the certification class (this is a "self-serve" transfer). 2. Printing? Wow! I can answer print a 70 minute b/w film for peanuts.. not the thousands a lab will charge me. 3. Traveling mattes? Should I do all that old-school effects work on this optical printer or does Final Cut Pro do it better Thanks!
