We just bought a red cam. What accessories are worth purchasing, and which arn't? Are there cheaper third party options?

From what I hear, it seems like a good idea to avoid Red made accessories and instead look at third party manufacturers, like Element Technica whose EVF mount apparently is quite good.

Sim Video also. They have a different approach, but look the business. You could mix and match a bit.

 

With the 3rd parties working away, it seems like a good idea to hold off buying the accessories until you've about to get your camera and see what's on offer.

Stay away from the handles. They are useless.

 

I would go with as much Zacuto and Element Technica stuff as you could, both are far superior to anything Red is making.

Most of Red's accessories are fine. The bottom plate, shoulder dovetail, and right and left handles are rather iffy, and you're much better off with Element Technica stuff. (But you'll probably end up owning most of the iffy Red accessories anyway, because they come with the Base Production Pack, the other components of which are useful, and cost more than the entire Production Pack if purchased individually.)
