Nick Norton
In my need to shoot live sound, i was wondering if there was any way to silence the Canon 1014xls. I'd much rather keep my canon rather than being forced into a 16mm investment. Thanks- Nicholas
Premium Member Matthew W. Phillips Posted May 27, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted May 27, 2008 One idea is to have a custom barney made for the Canon. This may not cut out all of the noise but it will lessen it. On top of that, you can wrap an additional blanket over it to further silence it. Then you can help by other strategies like: -Getting a boom mic that is very sensitive to close directional noises but rejects most of the noise coming from off-axis distant noises. -Placing the camera a longer distance from the sound subject to help your boom mic reject camera noise. -Film in an environment that does not echo sound as much or use techniques to absorb sound. -Film most of your dialog scenes outdoors in quiet areas so the sound is less likely to direct toward your mic. -Use noise reduction software in post to further cut noise. -Also get a wind sock for your boom mic to further shorten the range of your mic. Nick Norton
Appreciate the help. I'm not familiar with a 'wind sock.' Know where i might be able to get one? Thanks- Nicholas
Douglas Hunter
There is a place here in LA called Custom Upholstery Products that makes barneys for super 8 cameras. Here is their web site: http://www.customupholsteryproducts.com/
Premium Member Matthew W. Phillips Posted May 28, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted May 28, 2008 A windsock is a hairy furry thing that goes on your boom mic to cut the noise. Here is an example of one: http://www.pssl.com/!6h0sDS8fMs2!G...Sock-For-ME-
Jim Carlile
Go to KMART and try out a simple bathroom rug. Take the camera with you and see which one muffles the noise the best. Then buy it, take it home, and cut out a pattern that best covers the camera and gives you access to the controls. Use fancy color duct tape to hold it together. It works.
