Seeking: Genius DP's with a desire to break new ground

Recommended Posts

I'm a writer/director who has made features, tv shows, reality shows, docus, etc (google my name) in the indie world and for studios and networks (CBS, MTV, Paramount, etc). See VOICES OF IRAQ, MTV's FEAR, CAMPFIRE TALES.

With other professional in the industry, I'm shooting experimental shorts, pushing ourselves beyond the plain vanilla of what the industry expects from us. The purpose of these films is for everybody to challenge themselves to go beyond the ordinary, to push our boundaries as artists.

Now I'm looking for DP's to contribute to these shorts.

There is no pay (nobody is getting paid). Working on these shorts, you can build you reel, push your skills into doing things filmmakers haven't done before (it's what I've done in the past, google VOICES OF IRAQ) network with working actors and writers/filmmakers, and do something really f*cking cool.

We're not students make student films. All the people working on this are pros. I already have a basic camera package (HPX-500, matte boxes, and other goodies) and working grip/lighting trailer (with flo's, lot's of lights, flags, etc) So we're not tied to raising money for these shorts - we just shoot. Since we're not burning money on these, we free to take risks we wouldn't otherwise.

If this gets you psyched, email me a reel or a link to one.

We shoot in LA.

Thanks!

So.........

You don't pay anybody...yet you plan to sell the films? Obviously you sold "Voices in Iraq", does the crew see any of these profits?

Just asking is all :)

Andy

On VOICES OF IRAQ, everyone was paid. That was a fully financed, theatrically released feature film. Same goes for my other commercial ventures.

This is different.

What I'm talking about here are experiment shorts, the budgets of which come out of my pocket. The actors aren't getting paid, neither are the make-up people, other crew, or me. The purpose of these little films is to take creative risks - not to be sold. If they fail creatively or cinematically, it's no big deal. You do them again, or try something different. Actors get to practice and stretch their craft in class - where do other creatives get those opportunities? No where. That's why I'm putting these together.

The current short I'm working on involves a IRREVERSIBLE like narrative style... except taking it further into what looks like one long take that spans several scenes and days because the lead character has no perception of the intervening events. Where else will you get a chance to see if that's possible. That's what I find so cool about doing these things. I hope some people out here do too.

Plus, I have yet to meet person who made money off their short. :)

(no offense, but...)

Why does this have the sound of a craigslist ad...?

I don't know. This is a cinematography forum and I'm looking for cinematographers. I could always write the headline in a boring, straight way... "looking for DP"... but what the hell... we're suppose to be creatives, so why not get creative with the writing.
