Working with Todd AO's for the first time

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm working on a show this weekend shooting RED with Todd AO anamorphics (first gen), just curious if anybody has worked with these lenses before. Any tips or advice for general on-set use and handling is appreciated.

(Please don't link to Max's thread on anamorphics, I have read it thoroughly.)

Funny you should say that. 50 Cent's latest video was shot with Todd-AO's on the Red camera by Claudio Miranda. The Todd's are noticeably softer than most other anamorphics, but they flare uniquely and very heavily. Nice look to those lenses.

Also check out Claudio's new anamorphic and spherical lens flare tests. They're very informative.

That is some of the most stylized RED footage I have seen. I would like to see the HD version of it, but it looks OK at the laughable you tube compression. Claudio did a good job, and the softness of the ToddAO lenses could really compensate for the sharpness of the video image.

The tests are awesome for comparison. Kudos to Claudio!

Just to chime in here, I have a set of 35, 50, and 75mm Lomo roundfront anamorphics and a 40-200mm Lomo rear adapter zoom in OCT19 mount available to rent (I'm based in LA). My RED/OCT19 adapter is coming in on Monday.
