Jonathan Spear
Hey folks, Does anybody know which cameras/lenses/film stocks and filters were used in the making of 'the 5th element'? Thanks, -T
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted November 29, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted November 29, 2004 It was mostly shot on EXR 200T (5293) in Super-35, one of the best Super-35 blow-ups and home video transfers I've seen, actually -- a very clean-looking movie. Arri 535B and Arri 435, Zeiss lenses. Digital Domain pushed them to shoot in Super-35 instead of anamorphic, so it was a good thing the DP decided to use 200 ASA film for the whole project (except for greenscren work, which used EXR 100T 5248.) This is covered in the May 1997 issue of "American Cinematographer".
Jonathan Spear
Cool, thanks! "one of the best Super-35 blow-ups and home video transfers I've seen, actually -- a very clean-looking movie" Agreed. "It was mostly shot on EXR 200T (5293)" I heard "the Grinch" was shot on that too (another very colorful film). Seems like that EXT 200T stock is an awesome choice for great, accurate color reproduction - I'll keep that in mind for future projects. It definately added to the film's extravagant look. Premium Member Max Jacoby Posted November 30, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted November 30, 2004 They used Zeiss Variable Primes on 'The Fifth Element' Robert Richardson shot on the 93 a lot. But I think it got discontinued now.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted November 30, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted November 30, 2004 Now your choices are 5274 (Vision 200T) and 5217 (Vision-2 200T).
Arni Heimir
Now your choices are 5274 (Vision 200T) and 5217 (Vision-2 200T). Is color reproduction any different between Vision 2 500t (5218) and the Vision 2 200t stock?
