What is it about these shadowmakers? Can you believe it? On the forum

on New Years Eve talking about film and light and boxes with holes. I be-

lieve Conrad Hall was right, there is something special about cinematog-

raphers, and something special happens when they all get together and

talk about film and light. Stand-by Please! Roll Audio! Roll Camera! Action!

I've never actually shot any movie film in a motion picture camera before.

In some book I have around here under other books, I read that you want

to start the tape deck rolling, have tape running smoothly before camera rolls.

I shoot a lot of dv and we just yell: Quiet!, Action!, Stop! or Cut!. I have no

experience shooting on formal set.

Happy New Year,

Greg

Goes a little something like this:

AD: "Last looks"

AD: "Pictures up"

AD: "Roll Sound"

SOUND: "Speed" (sometimes sound will slate the audio, if not,the 2nd will)

AD: "Roll camera"

1st AC or camera op: "Speed"

2nd AC: "Scene 3 apple, take 1"; "Marker" - He will then clap the sticks together on the slate. If sound slated the scene, he will just say"Marker" and clap the sticks

-sometimes- Operator: "Frame" or "Set"

DIRECTOR: "Action" or in the case of this really weird director I have worked with "Perform" - this is all said in the most dramatic voice one can conjure, of course with the corresponding hand gestures.

Except for some odd reason people like to prefix everything with an "And".

"And roll camera...."

"And roll sound..."

"And action...."

of course the drawn out one at the end of the take: "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand Cut"

"And lets go again..."

Greg: I tried to ask you this in another forum but you didn't respond. I'm curious as to what is your native language...your grammar is very unique, to say the least.

DavidSloan,

My grammar is a combination of German(ancestors came over on boat) and

settled here in Pennsylvania. You're not going to play college professor on me

now,are you? You know there are those who teach and those who do! Mixed in

with that there is some Vietnam grunt grammar and a little Joe Eszterhas. I have

a purple heart, bronze star, vietnamese medal of valor. Ranger 1st/16th rangers,

U.S. 1st Infantry Division, Republic of Vietnam 1968-1969. How many F******

medals do you have? Don't forget to let your tape deck get up to speed. By the

way,I skipped english class a lot and F***** around with cameras.

"I'll print that, and I'll go one more..."

Why does everyone say "print that take" when you get everything on the dailies tape...

I haven't ever heard a director say that, for exactly the reason you mention. Dailies are on tape or DVD most of the time now. If they're getting projected dailies then it makes sense.

I once worked on an HD show and the director was saying "check the gate" at the end of every setup. We just chuckled to each other and my 1st said "good gate". It turned into a running joke and the 1st AD would always call for the gate to be checked after a setup. I don't think the director knew we were messing with him until the last couple of days of the show.

"Check the CCD!"
