LOTR is in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio, imdb says it was shot anamorphic. however it shows none of the artifacts I associate with anamorphic. but the image quality to my eyes looks to good to be a 2.40:1 crop. whats going on here?

IMDB page correctly says that it was shot in Super-35:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120737/technical

The release print format was scope (anamorphic) however since Super-35 is not a projection format.

.... it shows none of the artifacts I associate with anamorphic. ....

That would be consistent with it being shot flat Super 35, and the anamorphic release being created digitally in the DI.
