Hunter Sandison
Hello, I'm rather ignorant on the use of negative fill. If someone could please educate me a little on the circumstances one would find it desirable and the techniques to employ, I would appreciate it. Premium Member Kevin Zanit Posted March 13, 2005 Premium Member Share Posted March 13, 2005 There have been a few big threads on the subject in the past. Search for it, because there were many good answers there. Kevin Zanit
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted March 13, 2005 Premium Member Share Posted March 13, 2005 Yes, we had a big discussion on it just a few months ago I think. Short answer is that it involves adding more contrast by using large black flags, etc. near the subject to reduce the amount of ambient light coming from one direction, like on a flat overcast day. Patrick Neary
a gaffer I know had a funny story about a DP he worked with who insisted on creating "negative fill" by setting up a 5k or 10k and then stacking scrims, silks and singles and doubles in front of it until no light was making out the other end-
Don Bachmeier
Similar to the legendary local DPs who put up a 10K and diffuse it through sheetrock. So I've heard.
Premium Member Mark Sasahara Posted March 15, 2005 Premium Member Share Posted March 15, 2005 Be sure to use Sheetrock brand, or gypsum board that has a white, or gray paper cover. Some gypsum board has a green paper cover which will give you a nasty green color cast. I find that Homasote, with a thin outer coating of concrete is a nice lightweight alternative. I can use this with a Brute for neg fill if need be, but I shut it off every fifteen minutes. Hope this helps!
DavidSloan
For CUs try a 2k through a 6x silk on 1 side, and a 6x solid on the other.

Actually, what lightweight reflector materials are available that can stand the heat of a Brute, up-close and personal?
J. Lamar King IMPOSTOR
Here is a typical example of using a large flag as negative fill in a close-up. You can see it's overcast outside so I'm using a 1.2K HMI, visable above my head, on one side through a diffusion frame and a solid on the other to build up some contrast. Premium Member Kevin Zanit Posted March 15, 2005 Premium Member Share Posted March 15, 2005 Posted these before, in the other thread, but hey if Mr. King is willing to take the trouble, so should I :D Negative fill to the left: The reverse of that same shot: And the resulting image: In that other thread, I think I posted a more detailed explanation. Dominic Jones
Sorry to be a pain, but I'm very interested in learning more about negative fill myself - I've been searching around but have not been able to find the full length threads, just this one... Anyone got any idea where they are?! Cheers!
