He has varied his approaches over the years. You should find articles on specific movies; there have been some on "O Brother Where Art Thou?", "Man Who Wasn't There", "Hudsucker Proxy", "Fargo", "Shawshank Redemption", etc. over the years in magazines like "American Cinematographer." He's also interviewed in the book "Cinematography Screencraft."

You also might look in the post just below about DVD commentaries. Someone might have posted (or might post if you request it) DVDs with Deakins on a commentary track.

There is an article in American Cinematographer that covers his work on "The Village"

I also believe there are articles in some recent issues that cover "House of Sand and Fog" (January 2004) as well as "Intolerable Cruelty" (October 2003) however I don't think the latter two are available on-line. You might want to try ICG magazine as well:
