Reuel Gomez
What does the Red Epic or any other digital camera offer as far as it's performance and cost as opposed to VistaVision and other large formats when it comes to plate/VFX work? Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted January 28, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted January 28, 2014 Digital will - generally - be lower in noise, and inevitably stabler. Large film formats may compete on resolution, especially with slower stocks. Why?

Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted January 29, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted January 29, 2014 Digital cameras would be cheaper than large-format film cameras and not need scanning, clean-up, stabilization, etc. Resolution depends on a number of factors. Depends also on the shot itself. If you have a sequence shot on film, then using film for your effects plates would probably help keep a consistent look, but if the effects shot is a super wide establishing shot or cutaway to some helicopter angle or some other extreme change in scale, then often the texture of the shot doesn't necessarily have to match perfectly with the bulk of the scene.
