how to change the iso rating

I have decided to rate my iso 1000 film stock at iso 500 ( thanks to the info provided by Dave Mullens and Dirk Dejonghe). But how exactly do I go about that ? I know I must make the appropriate adjustments on my light meter, but do I also have to make a note on my camera reports ? How will the lab know that I have not "box rated" the emulsion; that I have changed the "factory settings" in terms of the iso and that they ( the lab) should be aware of that .

It depends on what your plans are to counter the overexposure.

 

If you plan to overexpose by 1 stop and then print down, you don't tell the lab anything other than process normal (you may want to shoot a gray card and tell the lab to print for the gray card). But if you want the lab to pull process the stock by 1 stop then make sure that is noted on the camera reports. There is a section usually with 3 check boxes. Check pull process, and then there is a line to write by how much. Write 1 stop.

What 1000 ASA stock are you talking about? It must be a still camera stock because there is no 1000 ASA motion picture stock.

 

If you shoot a gray scale or card with a face behind it in flat light at the ASA you have chosen, the lab will time the print or the transfer so that the gray scale looks normal in brightness, thus compensating for your change in rating. You just want them to process normal if what you want is a stop excess negative density by rating a 1000 ASA stock at 500 ASA.

Just remember that the still film color negative films use a very different process (C-41) than motion picture color negative films (ECN-2). NEVER try to process a motion picture color negative film in other than the ECN-2 process, as you need to properly remove the rem-jet antihalation backing, or it will dirty the process ruining your film and that of others going through the process.
