I know x-raying undeveloped film is not good. Normally, the x-ray machines used for security inspection will have no adverse effect on electronic equipment or media. "Sanitizing" equipment used for shipments to some govenmental facilities may cause damage. And you should avoid shipping film and sensitive electronic gear by air during periods of intense "solar storm" activity, which can increase the risk of "dead pixels". http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editori...torial_1248.xml http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editori...torial_1035.xml http://www.sec.noaa.gov/ http://www.spaceweather.com/ http://www.sec.noaa.gov/NOAAscales/NOAAscales.pdf
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted October 2, 2005 Premium Member Share Posted October 2, 2005 Hi, Particularly old EPROM can be affected by even quite low dose X-ray, but I would expect anything that old and flaky to have long self-erased by now anyway! I know x-raying undeveloped film is not good. Airline scanners and cosmic radiation can destroy pixels. Make sure you do a black balance (or a couple black balances) after going through an x-ray scanner. Doing a black balance does more than just balancing the blacks. It operates a fault-detection system which corrects for bad pixels.
Niklas
I'm carrying the camera in a carry-on bag. Would it help to put thin lead around the camera at the area of the CCD to prevent cosmis rays?
