Fulgencio Martinez
Hi, I´ll be shooting in Spain (pal system) a music video for the mexican market (ntsc). We will be shooting S16. The director want the master in digibeta PAL and then take it to NTSC. Is this the way to go? How will this affect the quality of the ntsc copy? Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted May 1, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted May 1, 2004 PAL-to-NTSC conversions look a lot better than NTSC-to-PAL conversions so you should be OK. Since PAL is 25 fps (50i), it will be treated a little like 24 fps film is and get a 3:2 pulldown added in the conversion to NTSC (30 fps / 60i). Also, PAL has a 100 more lines of resolution than NTSC so there shouldn't be a loss of quality in the conversion.
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted May 1, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted May 1, 2004 Hi, There is actually now a system which does exactly that, treating progressive-scan PAL as 24fps and performing a 3:2 pulldown on it, to provide an artifact-free (or at least as artifact-free as 3:2 pulldown ever is) transcode. It will be slightly slow and the music timing will also be slightly off. Your clients may worry about this. Phil
