  1. Avid has release an updated EuControl Software Package Version 3.1 for Mac OS X and 64-bit Windows. Colorists using the Euphonix MC Color / Avid Artist Color control surface will benefit from this update. http://euphonix.avid.com/artist/ux/euphonix/artist_downloads.html
  2. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in HFR 3D was the first presentation I've seen at 48fps on the big screen. With a run-time of more than two and half hours I expected the high frame rate effect to become less noticeable as the story progressed, but it never did. The 48fps did not make the action feel more "real" to me. In fact I almost always felt like I was watching a 50i film on a really big TV, or a great looking video game. The HFR was particularly uncomfortable during some of the hand-held camera shots, making them feel almost like TV news. Aside from the HFR, the coverage on this film seemed more conventional and included a lot more close-ups, ECU's and standard OTS conversations than I remembered from the LoTR trilogy. During some of the more populated scenes (i.e. Watertown) there were a number of cutaway CU reaction shots of background actors that felt out of place, as if they were inserted to cover rough dialogue edits. Dragon CGI was amazing, as was some of the fight scene choreography. I never connected or sympathized with any of the characters.

  7. This most excellent article by John Brawley is a necessary read if you're not quite sure of proper slating procedure. Slating like a Butler http://johnbrawley.wordpress.com/2013/12/09/slating-like-a-butler/ The Slate goes in at the very last minute. Know your lenses and know how far away to stand. Be Quick. Don’t make the operator chase you. Exit Strategies. Read the scene. Be Steady. Keep it clean. Spell it right. Get it right. Let there be light but not too much. Don’t walk away with the slate.
  8. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_7d#DriversAndSoftware Details of changes: Firmware Version 2.0.5 incorporates the following fix. 1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the image files cannot be transferred using the FTP protocol via USB cable after the EOS 7D camera has established a wireless connection to the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E5 (A/B/C/D). *: In compliance with the law regarding electro-magnetic waves in each region, there are four types of WFT-E5 (Types A, B, C, and D) for each of the respective target regions.

  11. I think you're being too hard on Resolve, Phil. I agree that the absence of a Premiere round trip sucks, but all the other workflow annoyances you note hardly seem worth mentioning in my opinion. Logging-in is one click, Auto Scene Detection works great for me (but could be a pain on larger projects), and tabbing out to another app is not a problem. I don't know why you need to manually plug in your dedicated playback monitor. Mine remains attached and I use it in Premiere too. The Resolve experience is much improved on a machine with hardware suited to the grading task like a lot of RAM, multiple GPU's, a BMD HD output device and a control surface. I'm using two GTX570's, the UltraStudio SDI and the Avid balls and it's all pretty smooth. I'm still using Resolve v9 but I know some people who like the v10 improvements. But to answer your question, there's SGO Mistika http://www.sgo.es/mistika/

  13. Check this out: Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder Even comes with Plural Eyes if you buy through B&H so you can sync up audio easily http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/929347-REG/Tascam_DR_60D_DR_60D_4_Channel_Linear_PCM.html/BI/1221/KBID/1557/kw/TADR60D/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xTADR60D
  14. Flavio, What is the difference between spectacular and great? I would think you would want your audio to be as good as possible. The Sound Devices mixers and recorders are expensive because they sound great, interface well with video equipment and are constructed to function in demanding conditions without failing. An inexpensive digital recorder like the Tascam might work fine. You have stated you are not an audio specialist and yet you are rushing to assemble an audio kit with limited resources and knowledge at the last minute before a project next week. You probably won't have time to test your new gear well. Have you considered hiring an experienced sound person with gear for your shoot? I'm glad that you have turned to Cinematography.com for advice, but please recognize that you are setting yourself up for technical problems in the field when you cut corners using unproven, untested gear. Additionally, the resale value on pro audio equipment like the Sound Devices MixPre is very high. You could resell that on ebay in six months for 80% of the purchase price.
  15. It might be better to record double-system sound if the BMPC's inputs are weak and unpredictable. There are many portable digital recorders available. Buy spare batteries. TASCAM DR-40 4-Track Portable Digital Recorder
  16. For primordial sound quality :) I recommend the Sound Devices MixPre. http://www.sounddevices.com/products/mixpred/ Cutting corners on audio, especially for documentaries which tend to be audio-driven, is a bad idea. Guitar pedals?
  17. Most often the production company will schedule the BTS interviews when it is convenient for the talent and crew. It might be on a separate day. Yes and No answers can be an editor's nightmare since your questions might not be included in the piece.
  18. Welcome, Keenan. The forum search can be sluggish sometimes. Your questions are general and not uncommon here. There are many threads in this Student / New Filmmaker forum that discuss the pros and cons of film schools and getting started in Hollywood. Ultimately you know more about the environments you are most likely to succeed in, the resources you have available, and your aptitude as a photographer. I recommend you spend some time browsing this forum.
  19. Ahhh. You mean a loudspeaker, not a person speaking.
  20. Why is the sound of the banana leaves louder than the voice saying "banana leaves"? Was the mic pointing at the speaker's mouth?
  21. I'd be willing to bet the audio is from the TASCAM DR-05's on-board mic.
  22. That's mic handling noise, probably from the camera mic. There's no way that mic is one foot from speaker. Maybe the boom is on the other channel?
  23. Cindy, You should contact the DI facility you plan to use and ask them if they support TIF's. Some will.
  24. They are definitely sound bites, Phil. They may be inaccurate some of the time, but I'd bet less than half. If you include the rest of that statement the context is more clear; "...and they are willing to work hard for their own chance at success." Effort does not guaranty success but it most certainly betters the odds. Even if financial success is not achieved hard work can be rewarding. I like this TED talk on Grit. IMO There is a general disregard for effort and concern among today's youth, born into the internet age where competition was so fierce that resources were free, and free and easy is what they expect now that they are beginning to venture into the world.
