  1. What is a relay lense? That is all.
  2. Nancy Schreiber ASC shot a narrative piece with the DVX100. Can't remember the title.
  3. I recently discovered rondexter.com. It's not a forum but still very informative. cinematography.net is good
  4. Shotmaker has camera cars that accept the technocrane. Premier Plus Camera Cars
  5. Spot meters it seems provide the clearest results when using negative film. There are ten zones and more or less 10 stops of latitude with negative film, so a spot meter is giving you the f-stop necessary to render your ?target? grey, zone five. What about w/ reversal with a much higher contrast and latitude? Can you rely on your meter to give you a zone 3, 4 or even an image?
  6. You've inspired me to watch Birth of a Nation. It is available on google videos for anyone that cares. Peace
  7. Has anyone ever witnessed tungsten balanced lights with a greenish hue. I was shooting with a HVX200 using an omni light when I noticed the problem.
  8. Drew, I'm having a hard time visualizing that. The grips were able to rachet strap 3 apple boxes, a high hat and the camera to the car door???? They fed a strap under the door and through the window, no?
  9. I like the title "cameraman".....it seems the most humble.
  10. If you are just interested in lighting your own projects and not getting jobs based off fancy name brand equipment, there are plenty of inexpensive things you can buy. To name a few... china balls photofloods MR16s (a parabolic reflector with decent throw, color balance to tungsten or close, screw in base, comes in 120v and 12v) clamp lights a mirror Why not a cheap parcan? The light will surely cost less than the light stand you will need for it. Probably the most important items are expendables... black wrap, gels/diffusion, commando cloth, bounce boards
  11. I am supprised that more key grip don't continue on to become DPs. Why isn't it considered an exceptable road to take to becoming a DP? I'm bringing this up because many DPs (and I think this technique is compatable with my habits as a young cameraman) use larger sources and afterwards (after the electric dept. is at crafty) the grips shape that light to emphasis and de-emphasis different parts of the set. This process of unlighting is an artform- no? The age of the grip is upon us. Grip it.
  12. what are the circle of confusions for 1/4, 1/3, 1/2in CCDs? hope someone has an answer

  14. Karl, I?m sure your aesthetic choices (48fps, 7285, 16mm) will really impress the insurgents from Iran whose president the CIA assassinated and whose infrastructure was devastated by a war we indirectly funded. If it doesn?t, surely it will impress the Saudis whose holy center is home to enormous US military bases and our representatives, 18-24 year old frat boy soldier racists (you can watch US soldiers ramming Iraqi civilian vehicles if you would like?youtube.) I guess if you want to appeal to a domestic audience, I would have to recommend a saving private ryan look. What was the shutter angle again for the D Day scene. Gee? it must have been a good 11.25 deg. You know what?go with a 435ES. Dolly? I have an idea of why you?re interested in war documentation. It?s grand, glorious and from the biographies I have read, done by a good portion of famous cinematographers . It?s a different time though. As far as the objectivity of the media? two words?press pools. Journalists need to be accompanied by soldiers at all times. As a journalist if you would like the opionion of a US soldier (seems reasonable), they?ll tell you by reading the answer off of a laminated card provided to them by their superior officer. You should know that before you waste all your film with those unbiased interview. Be careful out there.
  15. Kinos could easily be hidden in the interior of the bus if you removed them from their mount/barndoors. They make a special splitter for kinos so the headers cables are seperated at the ballast allowing you to place the bulbs far apart. I would not mess with the lights on the bus unless you know for a fact they don't flicker. If it is a night scene, I'll be interested to know how you play carlights on the inside of the bus. Always a challange. I love the lighting in the LA metro- very blue, bright and alien. Peace.
  16. Talk to Charlie Rose (yes, the interview show host.) He made the same observation and mentioned that the Super 8 demo reel was not a good representation of super 8 grainlessnesssss. Not sure if he has shot or tested anything himself. I recall some of the footage on the reel was very clean though..... specifically the lily pads. Hopefully we are talking about the same reel. Peace.
  17. AC voltage is more dangerious because it changes polarity and messes with your heart. That and also the current in a shorted AC curcuit will find the path of least resistance to the ground, be it a human or pool of water. The only way to get zapped with DC is if you are touching the + and - terminals at the same time. Keep in mind if an open DC curcuit is underwater it will still create a deadly electric field around the open curcuit.
  18. I can't remember what it does specifically, but I remember reading that you can change in what fashion your hot and ground lines are connected to your power plant ( in other words other than red to red, blue to blue, green to green.) By switching them (and I am not sure how) you can get not another type of service (i.e. single, triple phase) but higher voltage. Try to help me out here. Dan
  19. I was on a set today and the 1st had a difficult time with the various ramping controls on the Panaflex GII (not as easy as a 435 I guess.) Anyway, he couldn't get the camera to increase from 24fps to 40fps back to 24. I suggested shooting it at a high speed and doing the ramp in post to which the DP replied, " don't speak out of turn" ( I was gripping ((obviously unacceptable.) He continued to explain that this process would be too expensive. I got to thinking (while sitting on an apple box in the courner) why and how expensive. Digitally it is easy and printing something at different speeds seems easy except mayby conveying when and where to ramp to the lab. Does anyone have experience with this? Thank you.
  20. no? ---- I'm suprised people have nothing to contribute in the area of underwater cinematography. 70% of the Earth is covered by water not to mention all those damn pools.
  21. How does video output work with an underwater housing?? Thanks Dan
  22. What is the largest aperture you have ever worked at in an interior location and why (DOF, resolving power of lens...etc.) ???
  23. You light anything metallic like you would a vehicle, through reflection. Soft sources are used extensively, but think more in terms of the reflection principle, where you aren't necessarily aiming a light at the subject (pot), but lighting what you want to reflect. How do you do that? Flag off any direct light hitting the pot as to ensure that there is more light reflection in the pot than hitting it directly. A chimera will do this, but it won't be as beautiful as a sunset reflecting in the hood of an Aston Martin DB5, a pilot light reflecting In the contours of your pot or a naked women reflecting in a window looking out over the... Cameramen who specialize in this arena are called metallic cinematographers. Dan
