  1. not bad lighting, little dark, but good colors. I love color reversal, although there's really not a good reason to shoot it other than quick processing for a news report in 1973. I'm at work and have no speakers so I don't know if you linked sound. Image was mostly steady, only a couple jumps that are standard in bolex land. I'll say it again, awesome saturation of colors. Looks like you have a fully functioning bolex. good luck!
  2. Are there any Nizo/Braun fanatics out there that would prefer these cams to a canon? If so, why? also with the chinon, are there any diehards out there? just looking for pros and cons. I really like the nikon, i forgot about those, i'll keep my eye out for one of those too.
  3. I'm looking to shoot a short film for my cinematography independent study at san francisco state university. I wanted to shoot on super 8. I've primarily used a Gaf st/111 anscomatic, but want to step it up a notch on lens quality as well as more consistant speed for faux sync sound. I was planning on buying an 814 but haven't been too lucky on ebay and only wanted to spend $250-$300. I've done lots of research on the super 8 forum trying to find the quality diference between a Nizo and a Canon. In most posts people said, "well these two cameras are just on completely different levels". what makes these cameras on different levels? I don't believe either one comes with a crystal motor stock, so is one or the other more consistant at 24 fps? Is the lens on the canon far superior and faster? If these three cameras don't sound like the best choice, what would you recomend for price $250-$300? I know the chinon 877 is probably the lowest level of the three but it's readily available for me and seems pretty nice on super8wiki.com chinon: http://super8wiki.com/index.php/Chinon_877_Macro Nizo: http://super8wiki.com/index.php/Nizo_S_56 I posted the two specs for people to take a look, any comments would be great.
  4. Thanks guys, I've surfed the camera sites a good deal, I just can't find a mag with torque motor for less than $250 plus shipping on any site. this just seems like a little much for an arri S mag. I sold my K3 to a cinematography.com member and it worked very easily, I just figured this could be a better was than ebay. keanu, I'll PM you later tonight.
  5. I'm looking for some arri stuff to complete my package. I would like a magazine or two at least one with torque motor, a fixed 24pfs motor and possibly a tobin or equivilant crystal sync motor. I want to complete my package before I attempt to shoot a large project this semester at school. if anyone anyone with extra arri S accessories could let me know what they got it would help me out greatly. thanks kirk
  6. I have a chinon 132pxl for all my goof around shooting. It's auto exposure but exposes 100 black and white beautifully, also it's 18fps and single frame. It's about the size of a film cartridge and easily slips in my pocket. I use a 1014 for a reel shoot, but I can carry my chinon everywhere and not be too worried about dropping it. also 18fps is just fine for everyday shooting in my opinon. i also paid $3 for it at salvation army in a case never used. Check out super 8 wiki for a camera called the Pocket 8. I forget who makes it but it had an anomorphic lens included in the package if I'm not mistaken and was about the size of a wallet.
  7. anyone? I'm giving this camera to my little bro for snowboarding vids and was either going to give him black and white 100 or 64t. a great x-mas present to get him started in super 8.
  8. Kirk, I'm in agreement on the tape vs. CF, but I would rather have a recorder with XLR inputs. The mini-jack inputs just seem flimsy and unreliable. What has been your experience? Thanks, Dave yeah honestly my setup doesn't look extremely professional but no one has ever ripped the final product. I took a shure sm58 through a converter from XLR to 1/4 jack into another converter from 1/4->1/8 jack into the mic input. I then electrical taped the converters as to disguise my setup. I like it alot, I'm just hoping for a boom mic for christmas. kirk
  9. I have an old Gaf st/110, which I believe is actually a chinon camera, becuase it has a chinon lens and I've heard this model was made in japan rather than china. Anyhoo, I can't seem to find any info on super8wiki or other sites. I googled it 1000x and I can't find any good info. It seems to be overlooked and no one has any specs.....the reason I ask is because it is missing the metal plate that tells the FPS. it has two speeds, fast and faster and also a slow motion button. I think it is 18 and 24, but no site says what FPS this camera came with. Also inside the film compartment it says it will meter the basic 100 and 200, but also says 64! If this is true it would be a perfect camera for auto exposure with the new kodak. just a few questions and wondering if anyone has used this camera before. also what is anscomatic? kirk
  10. I have a marantz pmd 201 which i really like. It's two head cassette that I hook up to a shure sm58, all old band equip, and it works like a dream. I then play back the tape into a DV cam and then up to FCP. I should buy a better audio card for my mac, but this way seems to work pretty steady. I like the cassette and you can get them for under $100 on ebay I think. plus I haven't had a cassette tape yet that became corrupt while i've have two CF cards die. just my two cents. kirk
  11. yes def a k3 section and maybe one called "K3 vs Bolex, which one does your gut tell you is better?" this place is overrun with K3 vs bolex questions and also a subforum entitled "why it sucks to shoot sync sound with a spring wound camera" just a little satire. A very interesting ideas as well was put to use In www.bikeforums.net . they put in sub forums for bikes under $700. It works great to seperate the bolex, k3 filmo from the SR eclair and aaton. just a thought
  12. Salo by Pasolini was the worst movie Ive ever seen, and i made a thread about it a couple months ago. rape poop more rape, more poop, german butt sex, end point. Also Little Black Book, My girl begged me to take her, and I did, after 30 minutes she started apologizing during the film, that was the first and last time we saw a studio chic flick. actually, little black book might be worse, at least salo had a plot line that made sense. lol kirk
  13. I'm an undergrad in my senior year at SFSU, majoring in Cinema. Great Program, definate talent within students and within faculties. The foundation of SFSU if 16mm. Digital is looked upon as lame and not artistic. 35mm can be used, but not often and only the MFA's get to use super 16, which you are. McBride is a bad ass. All in all I feel it is Highly, highly under rated. some of the MFA's mentor the undergrads or TA intro 16mm filmmaking and theory classes. I like it, definately a worth while program and in the end, we'll see who prevails in the film industry. spoiled children or the ones who worked for it?..... prolly the spoiled children, they have more money. kirk, any other questions feel free to ask.
  14. I have three VHS tapes filled with family footage from approx 1950-1965, it's all 8mm, not super8, but I use it here and there to make music videos. tons of babies, and christmas presents. I quote professor Lau from SFSU, "people love to shoot babies". I'm estimating over 6 hours of footage. I only digitize what i want, so you could barrow a tape, but they are extremely important to me and would like to feel comfortable with the person I'm lending them to. I live in the sunset of San francisco and only offer this because you're probably my neighbor. kirk belvedereProductions@gmail.com heres a video I used some of them for.
  15. I'm a guy from san francisco with too much time on my hands. I tried to get in on super 8 cities, but Machi never got back to me. I'm game to cut up some sweet old school shows, kinda like the Spike jonze video for Weezer's Buddy Holly. I call dibbs on "Small Wonder" or a show of lesser or equal value. anyone checked out the IMDB for "Be Kind, Rewind"? you guys might be into it. kirk
  16. I shoot lots of shorts in Film school with an Eclair NPR and also my personal Arri S. I shoot music Videos and short films. I'd like to use 16mm for more extreme sports, as surfing and snowboarding, but it's hard to find people to finance such a venture. kirk
  17. here's a final version on youtube with titles. sweet 21 views, I think I have as many viewers as Miami Vice had this summer.
  18. So here's an almost final cut of a music video I've been working on. I used mostly 8mm found footage of a family vacation and parades. My dad found three VHS tapes at a garage sale that were filled with old 8mm home movies and one cartoon short. I chopped it up in FCP and this is the end result. It's not supposed to be a full music video, it's really going to be rear projected behind a rapper as he sings the song at his live shows. I'm working on a few different vids so he can have videos on all his songs for his live shows. Let me know what you think. Lo res version on Google video and make sure you put original size or else its way too pixelated. Also keep in mind the TV safe lines, when I project it on the wall you loose all the black borders and it works better. word, kirk http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8051112013870875667 here's the rappers page www.gangstarobot.com
  19. I actually found the exact same graflex 16 projector on my street corner and I use it for Off the wall telecines a lot. I thought it was a random no name projector, but maybe I found a gem on my street corner. I like it a lot and it does have the pressure plate you can adjust which i always use. 18 and 24FPS. i really like it and recomend it. kirk
  20. Yeah, that book is required reading for Cine 202 intro to film production at SFSU. it's on my shelf right not, right next to Braudy Cohen's Film theory and Criticism, i hate that book, lol kirk
  21. Hello, I have a couple prime lenses for an Arri S, One Cooke and two xenons. All Lenses work well, but I have a gut feeling they could be sharper. The focus ring has a little "play" to it. Anyhoo, Does anyone know anywhere to have them adjusted and cleaned? I'm in the bay area and it'd be sweet to go somewhere, but can ship if needed. Approx how much is this going to run me? Anyone done this before? Thanks, kirk
  22. So, I just won an auction on ebay for a fixed 25fps motor, it had a low price and seemed like a cool thing to have. My hope is that it is a Crystal motor that was overlooked by most ebayers, although I won't be too bummed if it's not. Anyone seen one of these or could identify whether it's sync or not by the look? I won't have it for prolly over a week, so this will be interesting to discuss before it arrives.. Here's the ebay item number: 190036343896 I also saw this sweet blimp, although I don't think I'll buy it, it did have a motor like the one I purchased included and it called it a synch, check it out: 250034972754 So, either crystal sync or not, is there any place or anyone that could modify this motor to 24FPS? Also, If I did shoot a sync sound film, with ANY camera, how hard would it be to use 25FPS in america, would editing and telecines be impossible or just a pain in the ass. Just some ideas before my motor arrives from sweden. thanks guys! kirk
  23. Hi all, I'm in film school and have always heard, or read in books, that most films have over 60% ADR in the final production. I know that every film is different and you can't gerneralize an entire art form to a mathmatical percentage of actual sound recorded on location, but I was wondering with everyone's knowledge on this forum I might get a sense of how much ADR is really used in a film like "Wedding Crashers" or " V for Vendetta" not an art house film, but a large scale production. I know in other countries the syncing of sound doesn't seem to be as important as it is in America, but I'm curious as a film maker, how I should go about recording sound. As meticulously as I can on set? , or if most sound is recorded in a studio later and they are just so good, I can't see it in the theatre? I'm just kinda curious, and it kinda influences weather I should be looking for an eclair, or BL over my arri s. not trying to start any MOS vs. sync wars around here, just curious. any comments would be awesome. kirk
  24. according to the professor, eroticism is not sexy or a turn on, or supposed to be appealing. Eroticism is perversion. So, technically according to him, these movies should be focusing on sexual perversion and messed up poop, rather than a pizza guy and two roommates who just happen to fall into bed together. I don't know if I agree or if it really is even correct, I'm just repeating it and I'm weirded out. kirk
  25. I just saw this in a "images of Eroticism" class at SFSU. Seriously WHAT THE fu**???? I don't think I'll ever be the same....I just want to know if anyone else has seen this or has any opinions or if i'm just gonna be messed up for years. whoa, pasolini....whoa, what were you thinking??!! It wasn't as graphic as I had anticipated, I thought it'd be like Audtion but still, I almost puked in my lap during the poop eating. whoa, any comments? kirk
