  1. thanks John! i'll check it out.
  2. august 4-5. noir mystery. non-sync short
  3. where can i get 1k or 2k dimmer switches? is there a lighting/electrical store that sells them? thanks!
  4. thanks xavier. I just wanted to get an idea so i can figure out my equip list.
  5. forgot to mention. possibly using transparent curtain. there are already vertical blinds but i don't really like them for the shot. thanks again.
  6. may need a gaffer for a short noir project. weekend in august. must have experience. thanks.
  7. how powerful are HMIs (brightness)? how much more than tungsten? i'm trying to motivate moonlight from a window (about 12' x 24' area) the width of the balcony (to place lights is about 17', floor length) will a pair of 575w HMIs be sufficient to create the effect? 1.2k? thanks for reading! Natalie
  8. how does it handle low light situations? most prosumer cameras suck under low light. how does it compare with HVX200? thanks. Natalie
  9. its an apt so i'd probably have to paint it back to white. the room isn't small. if it were my house i'd probably go with painting it.
  10. i fig when shooting WS the black bags and duvetyne may possibly be seen in the shot. the smaller fresnel spot lights seem to be a better choice with the usual flags, nets, scrim kit + black wrap. that is the toughest part to light..the lights coming from outside seem easier to work with. thanks.
  11. yeah painting the room black is not an option. i was suggested yesterday actually to use a bunch of duvetyne or black trash bags...but that will require a a heck of a lot either to cover the whole room. i was thinking i can use them as negative fill, to control light spill. i dont think i need to "black out" the entire room. i dont think adding too many set props will be approp. for this particular shoot but a couple items to control light wont hurt. thanks for your help! --Natalie
  12. how about motivated light on a subject from a hanging incandescent (house) light..like a bulb? would a pepper or 650w tungsten with 250 or 251 diffusion be sufficient? I also have moonlight from the windows...the tough part is that the room has vertical blinds. there is an outside patio where the lights would be. i can angle them because the patio is quite long..longer than the window so i guess i can cheat them out of the shot. not sure it'll look authentic spaced fairly far apart. what are your thought? curtains seem ideal as natural diffusers. thanks for reading! Natalie
  13. yeah i figured bounce will ruin the shot..perhaps using a soft light for bounce may be acceptable for CU maybe MS. using 2 main motivated light sources--moonlight from the window and incandescent hanging light a bit close to to the opposite end not far from a door. the front of the door will have a motivated porch light. in any case i'd need to mock moonlight and the porch light. the light itself will be in some shots..WS..but obviously it wont be bright enough alone. thanks a bunch!
  14. i've worked with grad students in an overrated film school that are no better than 1st year undergrads in other film school. i think people get lazy thinking their school is going to cover them.
  15. im shooting in a room that has all white walls..inc the ceiling. it'll work for a high key setting but that's far from what im trying to accomplish--night low key. what is the best approach when it comes to equipment, technique? thanks for reading!
  16. so hmis of equal wattage requires more power..got it. but 1.2k requires 400 or 200w?? thats a lot. im thinking 400 or 300k i wont be able to or do I want to rent a generator. i was leaning toward hmi because its daylight balanced.
  17. what are the typical amperage for each below? (1) 1.2K HMI (fresnel)? are they consistent like tungsten? ex: tungsten (approx.)-- 1K = 8 amps, 2K = 16 amps (1) 2 or 4 bank kinoflo thanks!
  18. is lending just as expensive as renting long-term?
  19. pretty impressive light with the exception that it dims overtime. how bright do these LED lights (47-440Hz, 40w, 0.25 amps) get? how is the quality of light it emits in comparison to kino-flos or hmis? and what is the difference in the amount of power it uses (amps) i comparison with those 2 lights..generally speaking? thanks a bunch! -Natalie
  20. i heard that because of the incredible amount of hard drive space/memory it requires (gigs/per sec)...they have to create whole new systems to be able to capture and edit the footage. I heard apple is looking into it. I know so little about this camera but when I heard it was a "4K camera" it was so exciting. some people believe once the RED is released, it will replace 35mm film entirely. what do you all think?
  21. I was wondering if or when the HPX500 will come out. does anyone know? also does anyone know about leasing cameras? I never knew about..I found out about it today. how much does it cost..per week/month, etc? thanks all! Natalie
  22. what exactly is it? is it for consumers that can shoot digital but want the film look? they say it's for mainly point-and-shoot. are they trying to bring back film in consumer products?
  23. day-for-night: other options would include underexposing by 2 stops (no filtration req) or exposing for the key and turning the key off when you shoot.
  24. speaking of p2 cards... what are the setbacks/thing to look for? and what do you think about renting them? i did hear that you can rent them. thanks all!
  25. what are alternative options to make relatively smooth camera movements (other than the dolly obviously)? the skateboard wont work..it's too low to the ground. i'd rent a model 11 but it's not worth it in this case. thanks!
