  1. Hello Mike, As track manufacturer I would suggest not to make your own tracks :-)) Seriously, it all depends where you want to use them for, weather you want curved track and heavier payloads above 80 kg. If so, please contact a manufacturer and deal along. It will cost you a fortune on time and money to make you a perfect set of tracks, especially the joints. If you want: I can send a sample piece to a friend of mine who lives in New Lynn. Maybe you can take a look at it? Good luck, Onno Perdijk
  2. Hello Ed, While I was typing my previous reply, interuppted by a diner, some more post came in... Steadycam and landing on some appleboxes could be the trick as well... I will be exhibiting my equipment at BSC2009 as well. Please drop by at my booth. Onno
  3. Okay Ed, You have reached the grip-ultimate-challenge: Not going steadycam, not going handheld, not able to have a dancefloor-move. Narrow area, a small step down, (if I understood correctly a locked-of start and stop, 180 degrees pan, 90 degrees narrow curve. Perfect ingredients for a nightmare. a) overhead tracking shot: Will be difficult to find a brand which makes the requested curve in an overhead. Because of the narrow corridor it needs to turn on a very short "footprint". NOTES 1: the actor you are following will be masked by the corner for a while before the chasing camera is in the curve, getting into the longer corridor. NOTES 2: As the manufacturer of the TrussDollySystem I do not make any curved trusses (yet). Besides the difficulties of bending the tracks there are also some hickups with the motorisation of it. NOTES 3: If I understood correctly you will also need to make a pan. Where is pan going to take place? In the start of the shot or in the corner???? B) Running on tracks would be perfect; except the narrow gauge and the 90 degree turn makes it hardly impossible to find a track which could fit (as mentioned before) Besides that I do have my doubt weather a long and small dolly could make this turn, either running or tracks or on the dancefloor, without hitting the walls on either side.... c) One option I am thinking of is difficult to explain but I will do my utmost. With a lot of DIY you can make a guiderunner the walls, like the handrail at steps, at normal height, using available tracks where there is a curved rail available in the requested diameter. I have made a quick drawing. Make sure the gauge is everywhere the same. d) My other option (not my last) is to nail down some gardenhose which is wider than normal (say 40mm, with extreme thick walls. Get some dollywheel from Willy's, more specific: his "coolwheels" and make yourself a small short scateboard-dolly.... So far for now. It will be on my mind this weekend. Good Luck, Onno Perdijk
  4. Hello Orestes, Sanjay will surely drop on by to tell how they did it on the Darjeeling. I have done it quite some times by using my TrussDollySystem. There is a "making of" available at my website where you can also find some other pics. Please do not hesitate to contact me for tips. Good Luck, Onno
  5. Hello All, Some years ago there was a thread on cml (http://www.cinematography.net/Shooting_On_Ice_Skating_Rink.htm) Hopefully this answers most of your questions, Onno

  9. Hello Michael and others, describing your shot by using a crane as to enlighten your idea is very good; it gives a very good impression of a very impressive shot! as wick said how about blocking tracks? and as others said: tricky business for a steadop to walk backwards at this speed starting from zero speed, stepping of running on full speed... post the phonenumber of this guy; he will be having lots of work ;-0 First of all: get an experienced grip, whatever your solution will gonna be. secondly: better safe the poop. I could think of a wireless gyro-stabilized remotehead, underslung a small platform, connected to the four cables of a "fly-by-wire" / cablecam-system. Release them when you are close to the ground and have 8 grips running with the platform and do finish the shot and 4 others to safe the remaining cables (hopefully this idea releases you from the "no go wire" thought). When using available equipment you could use a giant buildingcrane . With knowledge and experience hung the opp on the harnass (as Wick suggested) and/but with this note that this is not a balanced crane but a "payload-lifted" (if you get what I mean...?) With the swing of the boom and the tracking facility on the boom you could archive your tracking lenght along the running family, and release when on the ground.... It are just some quick thoughts, not a full "but what if..." and "how to..." Maybe tomorrowmorning when I reread this post I will think of my own stupidity somewhere... Good Luck as allways,
  10. Hello All, The idea of Sanjay of roping and pulleys to let the dolly move this fast has been working for me quite often. When doing A move this fast around a person I would suggest to line-up the shot in this way that there is no need for an operator on the dolly. If we go on higher speeds around a person I prefer to use a rotating platform (or similar) since you do not want to run the dolly of track going fast on a curved-track. The seat-swifflesupport from MSE can do a lot of good work. When you go bigger; the huge bearing which is used for trailers of lorries can do the job as well. High speed straight tracking? get in touch with a broadcastcompany doing sports! They now their bussiness very well, depending on the payload of the camera. Good Luck Onno
  11. Hello Markus, Basically your idea with the given circumstances seems to be okay. I would suggest to add some piping going down beside the window and some crosspipes to make it more stable and less vulnerable for wind. See attached image. Using steelpipe or truss would be recommendable. When you could use truss you can use a sleeveblock or trussdolly to get te lamp in its correct position and slide it in for making adjustments, change filters etc. good luck, Onno Perdijk KeyGrip Amsterdam Holland www.solidgripsystems.eu
  12. Dear Rob, I am impressed by your achievement, echt waar! The movement looks very smooth and I can assure you that the brutal moves with some "off-fabric-panbarsystems" does not work very smooth as well. Allhough I use AutoCad myself sometimes sketchup is faster to get your drawings done, i do admit Congrats! BTW: Did you find a KeyGrip willing to come over? (not that I am soliciting..., I am Happy in Holland) Best regards, Onno Perdijk KeyGrip Amsterdam Holland www.solidgripsystems.eu
  13. Okay, you have got me, now I am done with your rand about uploading pictures. Send them by mail to me and I will put them on my server and reply a link like www.solidgrip.nl/iraratner... (onno@solidgripsystems.eu) Onno Perdijk Keygrip, Manufacturer www.solidgripsystems.eu
  14. Hello Sanjay, Thanks for your reference. Yes we do make the tight circle; it is a 3meter32 (10ft) outside diameter. Making it more narrow will definitely mean a customized array of wheels. Good Luck Daniel, Onno Perdijk KeyGrip www.solidgripsystems.eu/prodcurved.htm
  15. Hello Daniel, You can always think of a customized track: Go to a workshop which has bending facilities, get them some tube of around 38mm diameter and let them bend you two curves withe your requested radius and thus diameter. You can lay them flat on the floor, without crossties (or sleepers?) Sure they will "walk" around on the floor but some sandbags will keep them more or less in position. With some tapemarks you can reposition to the original intended position. You just need to be able to get these huge 'single-tube-curves" into the room, it will be fun to maneuver them in! I have done this a couple of times and it worked. Good Luck, Onno Perdijk Keygrip and manufacturer www.solidgripsystems.eu
  16. Thanks Daniel for asking, I wanted to give you a correct answer so I looked at my website and saw that I did not notice where the diameter is being measured..! I changed it immediately to Outside diameters!!! Curved tracks can be made in any diameter you want (or the diameter the manufacturer decides to make them.) I can cut my 10m70 into 16 pieces of 22,5 degree (which they are) or in 12 pieces of 30 degree. The difference however is that the 16 pieces curve will have pieces of 2m10 long approx, and that a circle cut in 30degree will have pieces of 2meter80... We are manufacturing aluminum precision track at a 90 degree, 3m32, 4 pieces, as our smallest curve. Our largest circle manufactured as listed item is a 22,5 degrees, 10m70, 16 pieces as our largest curve. We di have manufactured a 21m30 circle at 11,25 degrees, consisting 32 pieces. (It was a hell of a job!!) Good Luck with your quest, Onno Perdijk Keygrip and manufacturer www.solidgripsystems.eu

  18. Hello Gabriel, Regarding the wheels I cannot help you without more details. If it is really stainless steel the best thing to use is a polish for stainless-steel-cookery, from your local warehouse. After that some motor-oil to protect could do the trick (or olive-oil to stay in lane..) Good luck Onno Perdijk KeyGrip Amsterdam, The netherlands www.solidgripsystems.eu
  19. Hello All, Again; it is all about the look you're after: 1) Either a free riding bike with a rig to either the frame 2) or the handlebar. 3) A rig replacing the frontwheel, attached to the hook of a pickup or insertcar (where you will miss the spinning frontwheel...) 4) a low-trailer/loader with a "home-trainer-rig" on it, with the bike riding along. Way before the digital episode I did something like 1) For pictures I really have to dig, same goes for option 3). Never used option 2) as mentioned in my previous post. Regarding option 4): We made a special mount for this commercial. The camera was on a TwinDolly / Trussdolly to give it the feeling of a left-to-right-movement. Attached some option 4) pics... (they could have been worse..) pictures Good Luck Onno Perdijk KeyGrip Amsterdam, The netherlands www.solidgripsystems.eu
  20. hello Daniel, Do you really want to attach a camera to the handels? Since when the driver starts steering the camera will start panning. While cycling you will need to do slight adjustments on your balance by steering so there will be a continiously panning... If you rig your camera to the frame itself it will always look straight backwards with a correct framing on the driver. I recall reading something about these kinds of rigs 3/4 of a year ago... or here or on CML. I can make you some quick drawing to get the camera at 1m on front of the bike, no problem. Good Luck Onno Perdijk KeyGrip Amsterdam, The netherlands www.solidgripsystems.eu
  21. Hello All, I have been using this kind of rig quite often for having the maximum of film-negative available for postproduction while filming a vertical-orientated subject. Or for some artistical-presentation in a gallery with multiple screens, setup vertical and diagonal. Onno Perdijk KeyGrip Amsterdam, The netherlands www.solidgripsystems.eu

  23. Hello Daniel, (does this really belong in AC's?) It is all about the look it depends on, in this way: I find that sometimes a stabilized head makes it too smooth. Sometimes you actually want to be more than just an observer with the action. a stabilized head takes out the small vibrations on all axes, not the big bumps: this is where the shock absorber or a jib arm comes as being usefull. I have done some very spectacular shootings with just a jib arm and an underslung head (Ronford F7 or Libra) and the operator sitting on the back of a pick-up. As soon as you are using longer lenses I would recommend a stabilized head on a jibarm or small crane. I'd also could recommend my TrussDolly on an BarTruss rigged on the back of a pickup with a stabilized head but my gear is not available for rent in NY.... 24. Most of the hoods of the modern cars are weak and plastic. Especially when rigging the "big-business-camera's" the hood will get damaged and bended. I always try to come from the frame of the car. Most cars do have holes with treads (commonly used for the welding-robots while manufacturing) Sometimes I can get away with kee-clamps, sometimes with single-sided scaffolding clamps. 25. Hello all, When doing business abroad I always check/google names and company's. this company name has only 1 hit leading to here, his name only leads to some musictitles, no wildlife research, no film. I would have my doubts, serious doubts!! Good Luck Onno Perdijk KeyGrip Amsterdam, The netherlands www.solidgripsystems.eu
