  1. Hello, I very much enjoyed it too. Good job. Do you mind saying how much it cost? Oscar.
  2. I am about to join a theatre group to learn about lighting, writing, directing and everything really. I think it will be an excellent way to learn many of the base skills needed for film making. Of course there are differences but still i think it will be good and i like theatre anyway. I don't know how the skills will transfer but i'm sure it will be helpfull.
  3. The film part of that shop is in the back and they are called film camera kit. they have a website. http://www.filmcamerakit.com
  4. Thank you very much. I can't take it to the same people you did because i live in the UK but i know a very good guy in london who should be able to do it.
  5. I have read that Arri only made 20 super 16bls. Thats amazing for you to own one of them.
  6. Hello. I have an Arri 16bl eq. When i press the start button on the hand grip, the camera starts and when i let it go it stops. I was watching this video of someone using a standard 16bl ; http://rtf.utexas.edu/equipment/gallery/tutorials/16bl.html and when they start it they do something that keeps it going when they release the button, i can't see what they do in the video but if anybody knows i would like to know how. Thank you.
  7. so is it supposed to get tighter or looser as i wind the film onto the other reel?
  8. here is a picture of the one that i don't understand with the spring.
  9. Hello, I have got hold of two posts for holding reels of film. One of them has an arm that can be used to wind the reel, but the other one has a threaded end with a spring and a disc that screws onto it. It is quite difficult to describe, but i am hoping someone will know what i mean. What i would like to know is how do i use them with a film viewer that i also have? Thank you.
  10. I own an Arri 16bl eq. That is the sync sound model of the 16bl For me it was between that and an Aaton, i can't remember the model. I chose the Arri because it is heavier, which is something some people might be surprised at, but i like that Also i liked it better aesthetically, which is unrationally important to me. The Aaton is quieter but the Arri is quiet enough. And the Aaton was twice the price. I bought it rather than rent, because i am an art student (not film) working on my own projects, so i can use it whenever i want and have not time restrictions which is good for me.
  11. If it is just for the the bride and groom then i think it is ok. I don't know for sure but if it is not going on tv or being distributed in any way, i really wouldn't worry about it.
  12. I haven't followed mini DV technology much very recently but i'll tell you what i can. The cameras come in two major categories, single ccd (that is the part that recieves light) and 3ccd. I have what was a top of the range single ccd camera and it is quite good, but not really good enough for any professional work. If you can afford it get a 3ccd camera, not only do they have better picture quality but they also have more controls and better sound. A feature that i really wish my camera had is the ability to turn off digital sharpening. The top end has always been between sony and canon, personally i would stick to those makes. I do not know much about HD but i know that you can get HD equivilent of the sony VX2000 for not much more money. HD is probably going to take the place of mini DV in terms of video cameras so it might be a better idea to go for that instead of mini DV. Also i know there are cheaper consumer HD cameras available but i don't know anything about them.
  13. I think that is an excellent idea. Being a student i would greatly appreciate it.
  14. The reasons I think it is 16mm are that the cameras they showed in the film were 16mm cameras, there are also those shots of 16mm film winding inside the camera. The porn films of the 70s that it was based on were shot on 16mm. The image looks so much softer and has much less detail than 35 normally has. I think that it may be shot on reversal film, processed normally, that was then transferred to negative. In the film you can see they have a few soft lights. I think they must have used a filter on either the lights or the lens, i'm no expert, i'm just trying to think how i would do it. Oh and maybe they overexposed a bit? What do you think?
  15. Hello, In boogie nights when they show the footage that is supposed to be the actual film they are making, like the scene with julianne moore and dirk diggler and a desk. I am assuming this is 16mm, does anyone know anymore details about what they did to get that look? It is quite warm coloured and washed out and soft. Thanks, Oscar.
  16. Thank you guys. Shane, where did you find out all that information, it is most helpful thank you. Do you know of a good resource or book on makeup for films? David, i am shooting on 16mm. Thanks again, Oscar.
  17. Thank you David, I think i will have to shoot at dusk or evening to get the blue skies. What sort of big lights should i think about using? HMI? Tungsten?... What sort of colour temperature difference is there between different types of light? I don't think i will be able to use computer colour correction on the film. I will obviously do some tests of my own but does anyone have any suggestions for stock that might help me achieve richer blues and reds than greens. Kind of similar to technicolour but not that extreme. Does anyone know the stock and lighting used in Barry Lyndon. This is not exactly the look i want but the flesh in that film is lovely. Thank you.
  18. Hello. I was wondering what creates the effect of vertical streaks seen on shots of fire in saving private ryan. I am thinking specifically of the fires at the bunkers on the beach.
  19. Hello everyone, I am currently in the early stages of making a film based on an old testament story. I would to achieve a look that resembles renaissance painting, (titian, veronese, reni, raphael [and carravaggio but not that harshly lit] and more modern - delacroix, gericault). Another influence is the photography of Julia Margaret Cameron. I got good results in black and white still photographs by using long lenses, very long exposure times, slow film and lit using just candles out of shot. I can't do the long exposures in motion film cameras and as i will have to use shorter exposures i can't light with just candles. I also want to shoot it in colour so the candles would make everything too orange. I want warm colours with particularly rich reds and blues. I don't have any experience with film lights, I have read about the various types in the book "cinematography" but i don't have any idea what sort would be best for what i want to achieve. I will be shooting outside mostly. I have not decided whether to shoot in daylight, around dusk. Or another idea i had was that i might be able to shoot at night but make it look like daylight through the lighting, this would give me the very rich areas of darkness similar to those in the paintings. However i think this idea is a bit too extravagant. So I would very much appreciate any ideas or advice any of you have to help me out with this. Thank you, Oscar.
  20. The BBCs recent nature series Planet Earth was very good as well as facinating.
  21. It isn't worth the postage costs for 100ft, but for larger amounts i recommend sending your film to Andec in Berlin. That is what i do.
  22. never mind, i have found quite a bit of info now thank you.
  23. Thank you. I had a look at the ronford f4 and it does look very well built. I do like the idea of having wheels to control the pan and tilt though, it seems a lot more precise. When i search for gear heads, I mostly get results for smaller units for video use, is there a more accurate description or brand name that would make my search easier? Thank you.
  24. Hello there, I currently have quite a heavy duty tripod but the head is not nearly sturdy enough for my arri 16bl. I have seen quite a few mounts like this in books but i don't know what they are called. http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0000...01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg This looks like the sort of thing i need, could someone explain to me what it is called. Also if anyone has suggestions for something else that makes a good head/mount please give me some details. Thank you, Oscar.
