  1. Sounds mental, man. And rather speculative of the filmmakers. They know that no gang members will want to lose face with the camera around. The video did convey desperation. Were you the shooter? Later, Martin
  2. Film sets gone wild. A new reality show. Check this story out: 2 dead as Angola film set erupts in real-life violence Last Updated: Tuesday, December 18, 2007 | 12:03 PM ET CBC News An Angolan movie crew filming a crime drama was interrupted by real-life violence on Monday, with two actors apparently shot dead by police, according to the director. Filmmaker Radical Ribeiro was filming scenes in a crime-ridden neighbourhood near the capital city of Luanda, when police officers suddenly showed up and opened fire, the director told reporters on Tuesday. "We saw the [police] pickup speeding towards us. It looked empty but then suddenly it stopped and people appeared on the back and without asking any questions they started shooting at everybody at close range," said Ribeiro, according to Agence France-Presse. The stunned director said he was just metres away and was incredulous that he escaped being shot. He alleges that the officers continued to fire on his cast and crew until he shouted out, "Please don't shoot, this is a movie!" The officers then sped away without attending to the injured, he added. Aside from the two actors who died, three others were injured and taken to hospital. http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2007/12/18/a...ng.html?ref=rss
  3. Hi, Sony and Canon shoot 1080i HDV and the JVC records 720p HDV. You will need the camera or a JVC deck to capture. Regards, Martin
  4. Hi Todd, Yes, I too have been put into that very same situation by a client. And they either have to pay you not to work for others- something they will never agree to do! Or they realize that the experience you gain on other shoots is to their benefit. And you can show your loyalty to them by giving them "bulk rates" - when/if they hire you more than "X" times a month they get your "special price". Hope this helps. All the best, Martin
  5. Hi, You should really watch the documentary "This Film Is Not Yer Rated". It gives great insight into the inner workings of the very secretive MPAA and just how frustrating the ratings process is for independent film makers. Regards, Martin
  6. Hello all, I have been the cinematographer on "Global Metal", the follow up feature to "Metal, A Headbanger´s Journey" (http://www.metalhistory.com) Due to another commitment I wont be able to shoot the last two interviews and the producer has asked me to recommend somebody. They need a qualified shooter in Phoenix on the 16th of April and another in San Fransisco on 19th of April, 2007. These are major interviews for the film and some footage of yours must be available online for viewing. Please send your contact information and a link to your footage to: lisa@metalhistory.com Good luck. Regards, Martin
  7. Hello all, I have been asked by the producer of a documentary to write a "Technical Treatment". I believe that he needs it for the funding we will be getting. I am curious as to what exactly this "treatment" should contain? We will be mixing formats (HD and Super16mm) but what more can/should you really say? All the best, Martin
  8. Hey, Supposedly when shipping some of the "Factotum" negs to Norway for scanning at "Dry Lab" in Oslo some of the rolls went missing! All they had left were the DigiBeta rushes and had to intercut that for certain scenes. Horror story. Perhaps that was the case in the scenes you mentioned. Regards, Martin Hawkes
  9. Thank you very much John. Your attention to the forum is amazing. I will be contacting Holger first thing in the morning. All the best, Martin
  10. Hello all, We need some slower film stock (anything from 200 and slower) for a shoot in Germany (Hamburg). Kodak here in Toronto could not deliver the Aminima spools and Kodak in Germany has already closed today- I will be calling them first thing in the morning but I'm wondering if anybody can recommend a different source. All the best, Martin
  11. Hi all, I know its not really "cinematography" related but you should read this blog about the scammer being scammed. Great reading: http://www.p-p-p-powerbook.com/ Regards, Martin
  12. Check out: http://www.235films.com/contact.html They got a lot going on. Good luck. Martin
  13. Coming from your music background you should tap into the local band scene and do some cheap music videos. They will at least cover film, dev and tk and you may end up with some cool stuff for a real. Word. Martin
  14. Great thread! I was kind of hoping Charles would post again. As shooters in today´s market we shoot with whatever format is available and make the most of it. But if your producer and director are referencing "classic cinema" and you are shooting on video you will only end up shooting yourself in the foot. All the best, Martin
  15. Congrats! Look at being a cinematographer as a life long journey. Everybody is all DP, DP, DP. Relax, look at the light. Martin
  16. Search the site. These primes are frequently discussed. www.cinematography.com/ forum2004/index.php?showtopic=1498 Later, Martin
  17. Hello all, Based on experience would somebody please answer the following questions: Does DistantEye viewfinder on the Minima let in a little light- as in enough to fog the film when shooting timelapse? How "daylight" are those "daylight" spools from Kodak? All the best, Martin
  18. Hello all, I´ve recently scanned (Rank) some 16mm Vision 250D to D-Beta and the telecine has grain the size of golf balls. I was unable to sit in on the scanning and asked for a graded transfer. After seeing the tape I called the lab to find out what the cause of the grain could be. They say that the exposures were slightly over and slightly under. Well that´s understandable, the subject was a girl on a scooter driving through a forest- I exposed for the shadow areas minus half a stop. But the grain is across the entire image- both the light and dark areas. It reminds me of a "film grain" plug-in. The stock has been in my freezer for a while but this looks like old Agfa high speed not Kodak Vision 250. Any theories, assumptions, self-promotions would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Martin
  19. Happy Holidays! Hope that everybody has had a good one. I´m interested in hearing what experience anybody has had while shooting sync sound with a Minima. What were the audio guys saying? Did you have to blimp it? Best regards, Martin
