  1. Hi, I have a set of these myself. They're the older Arri st mount, which means the whole aluminum barrel turns when you focus (on later st mounts, the barrel is stainless and the lense rotates internally). These older Kinetals can't be fitted with a regular PL adapter, which squeazes the barrel into place (with a ring or set screws). As far as I know, they can only go on an Arri st adapter (available for Arri and Eclair cameras). You might want to speak to Les Bosher on this issue though. His adapters are known to be top notch, maybe he can work something out. Might be costly for such precision custom work, though. Let us know what you come up with; these Kinetals are great glass. Good luck, Marc.

    35mm primes

Hi, Has anyone used Zeiss planar 1.2 35mm primes on a super 16 ACL? Any issues? Regards, Marc.
  3. ? Any feedback on this issue would help, really. It's quite a delicate matter. Marc.
  4. Hi, Thank you for your answer, it makes sense. My apologies for posting this topic twice by mistake. Marc.
  5. Hi, I've heard only the latest ACL mags (two parts pressure plate) should be used for super 16 . Any expert"s opinion about this? Marc.

  7. Hi, Most important is what final ratio YOU want for your film, what ratio your vision is. 1.66 and 1.85 don't feel the same at all. I'm french and I had a lab blow up my last film (16mm) in 35mm 1.66 with black bands on both sides so that the original 1.33 ratio is preserved (not an expensive operation and it looks fine). I am sure you could have an american lab blow up your 1.66 super 16 centered with black on both sides on a 1.85 35mm print (that way you use all your negative). Otherwise the problem you will have if you go with cropping to a 1.85 ratio is you won't know what you're framing in your 1.66 viewfinder, unless maybe you draw the final 1.85 frame on clear glass to go into your mattebox. Good luck, Marc.
  8. Hi everyone, I ran into series 7 Tiffen photar filters. I guess they were meant for still photography. The colours and densities seem quite different from the 49mm Tiffens I use. Does anybody knows what that difference is? Marc.

  10. HI, If you buy an Aaton XTR, consider maintenance cost (best quote I got is a 1500$ yearly maintenance deal in Amstersam for an LTR), and the cost of renting glass you can't afford buying. An ACL will cost you about 300$ every three years or 40000 ft in routine maintenance (by any of the knowledgeable technicians aforementioned) and will take all glass (C-mount, Arri standard, Arri bayonet, , PL mount, Leica , Nikon, and what not). Considering that PL mount glass is the best you can get is a matter of opinion. Some of the older Arri standard Cooke glass or C-mount Switar are beautiful , if you do'nt know and care (I don't) what people usually mean by "sharp". Regards, Marc.
  11. Use the right stock. Grain can't be added lest it looks like poop. Grain is within. Regards, Marc.
  12. Hi, Any camera is hard to load when you just got it. Practice loading it till you just love to do it in total darkness with your eyes closed. Keep on shooting, Marc;
  13. Hi, Check out e-bay. 32mm step-up rings are hard to come by, but a 34mm slip-on adapter (to series 5 filters or bigger) would do the job. Regards, Marc.
  14. Hi, What is your final support, 16mm, 35mm, or digital? What is your final frame ratio, 1:33, 1:66, 1:85, ... ? I'm not a technician, just a film maker, but I've noticed these are the first questions a DP will ask me before discussing what to shoot with and how.. Regards, Marc.
  15. Hi, There's a lot of forums dedicated to 16mm projection. You might want to look around on the net. I'm not a specialist... but I know that on some Eikis or Elmos, you can just file the gate. I'm sure you'll find information easily. Good luck, Marc.
  16. Hi, Talk to Boris, he's the Bolex man in Bxl: boris.belay@belgacom.net Stock is going to be tough; everyone is hanging on to what they have, and you would have to wind it yourself on daylight spools. You might try Julien at julien@constantvzw.com. He may have some stock or info as to where you could load it onto the spools (better bring some with you, the labs never send them back, so people hang on to them). Tell them I sent you; Good luck, Marc Barbé
  17. Hi, A friend of mine had the film path on his Aaton LTR modified after he had some light leaks with Kodak 500 ASA stock. Kodak told him that new stock was made of more fragile material and was liable to get damaged by the older camera's threading. Has anyone experienced this using sensitive film with an Eclair ACL? Best regards, Marc.
  18. Hi Jan, This is not aimed at you personally, but there seems to be more and more very lazy posts on this great forum, and questions asked that have a long history of answers and points of view if you'd only punch "search", and other places too. The net is not an answering service. Good luck with your new R16; why go S16 anyway? Most humbly yours, Marc.
  19. Hi, i guess you mean a CA mount adapter. They were available for the ACL. They pop up on e-bay once in a while; or you might try Les Bosher in Wales (check out his web site to contact him). Good luck, Marc.
  20. Hi, There seems to be more and more off the wall questions on this valuable site. How can anyone be torn between an Eclair ACLII and an R16 for S16 conversion? Regards, Marc.
  21. I, I advise you ask sellers questions about their items for sale on e-bay and look at their seller's history BEFORE you make a bid. This is the best way for everybody. Some sellers might get tired of people bidding and then not paying. Regards, Marc.
  22. Hi, There's a quite few posts on this forum that have discussed the RX-AR issue and the super 16 coverage; you might want to check them out. The 10mm switar should be tested in super 16.. One thing you have to be careful about is that some older 10mm switars have a locked focus ring (no change of focus is possible). As far as Angenieux zooms go, I've heard the shorter ones are much sharper (they're also much lighter). Which is worth considering since some of the older switars are very sharp little lenses. Regards, Marc.
  23. I actually go with series 7 rings (6 to 7 adapters are easy to find) since I have a complete set of Tiffen filters for the Cookes (the series 7 adapters also take 48mm filters, and 49mm if you just file down the filter threads). I guess I'll just have to wait for a 32mm to 6 adapter to pop up on e-bay... Regards, Marc.
  24. Thank you all for the precious answers. I also intend to step up to series 7 with the switars, since my main series is Cooke kinetals. I've found just about all the adapters I've ever needed on e-bay for a few bucks, except a 65mm step-up ring for Angénieux zoom. Best regards, Marc.
