  1. Hi everyone ! I'm French and i'm thinking to move to New Zealand to look at some jobs in the industry out there. I know already that New Zealand is on 50Htz and 220V. I'm wondering if the video signal/video frame rate is the same as in Europe : PAL ? In fact, can i burn a DVD of my demo reel here in France and be able to watch it easily on any screen out there. Thanks to your response. Have a nice day.
  2. Hi Guys ! I'm wondering what kind of effect we can produce with a different shutter angle than 180° ? I know that more you go to 45°, sharper you get...right ? I'm not looking to get a sharper image but just a slightly different feel of movement. In private Ryan they used a 45° shutter angle for the beach scene and i think that in Gladiator they did the same kind of trick. I would like to know if going 45° or 90° will create a different feel of movement for the audience when screening at 24fps ? I know that i would have to do some test and i will but if someone can tell me his experience or any film that i should watch... Otherwise, if i'm going for a 45° or 90° shutter angle which kind of troubles i'm going to encountered with sync sound, hmi, pan or anything else ? Thanks in advance.
  3. Hi Guys ! Few months ago I've sent my demo reel as DOP on the forum. Unfortunately, at that time, my website was really shitty :( Today, i'm sending it back to you cause i've improved all of this (new website, better compression and video quality). You'll need Quicktime Player 7 to be able to watch my reel. Everything you'll see was shot on S16mm and P+S Technik. Let me know what you think... I'm wondering if with a reel like this i can go to some music video production company to ask for jobs? By the way, anyone from France who can give me some advices about where i should go, who i should meet to maybe make my first by step in the industry out there ? My reel on http://arnocine.free.fr
  4. Thanks to all of you for your feedback. I see that you all loved the camera movement. I hope you also appreciated as much the lighting ;) You all told me that my downloading is too long and i don't know how to make it shorter  If anyone of you can advice me how to create a good quicktime file 320x240, let me know. Thanks again.
  5. Hi Guys ! Since i posted my demo reel i saw that more than 60people check it out! Thanks to all of you but please give me some feedback, some critiques ....Please ! I want to know what people with an eye about lighting think. Thanks again
  6. Hi everybody ! I am a French DP based in Paris. I've just edited my reel which mix together what i consider as my best work seen i started shooting three years ago. The quality of the video isn't really great and it's small : 320x240. You will need quicktime player 7.0 and the size of the reel is about 25MO, just to let you know. I would appreciate to get any kind of feeback and critiques about my work to judge my skills, my style...my level and to figure out if now i can send my reel to some Music Video Production Companies cause for the moment i'm only shooting short drama films/low budget. By the way, everything you will see was shot on S16mm with no color correction in post. One movie was shot on PS+Technik with Zeiss Super Speed and Canon XL2. So go on : http://arnocine.free.fr Thanks in advance :) Feel free to contact me directly to get more infos
  7. Hey, I really like it ! Simple but efficient. I enjoy a tiny bit less the music but still good too. I'm wondering how you didnt' get so less focus troubles with your super 8 camera ? I mean there is still some shot out of focus but most of it is acceptable to my taste. What kind of camera did you use and wich lens ? I'm thinking to shoot a whole short on super 8 and for the moment the different amateur's camera that i tested got big trouble with long shot. I forward the links ;-)
  8. Hi Guys, I'm gonna shoot as gaffer a short with a lot of Kino Flo 4'x4Bank. I know that you can use 24V batteries for what i call Single kit but what about the 4Bank ? I'm sure it works the same, i just want to be sure. I know also that there is some Power Car Battery Pack that can provide 220V(France) but for how long? Any advice about providing power for a couple of Kino we'll be appreciate ;-)
  9. Hi Guys ! I was following the topics since it started. I knew already what was a spacelight and i've a question about it : I'm going to shoot a poker scene (one round table and four people sit around it) and the director want a very soft and diffuse beam light coming from the top. She wants darkness around so i've to lit just the table. That seems pretty easy for me to handle this but i'm wondering about the unit i should use <_< First of all, i thaught to use a spacelight with a dimmer. But after thinking about it i'm scared that it's gonna be to hard. I mean i'm gonna get the shadow on the eyes and i want to avoid as much as possible this. So i thaught to use a Falt Head from Kino Flo and maybe had some diffusion to it ?! Anyway, my question is : Wich unit between the Flat Head and the Spacelight will be the best to get less shadow on the eyes if lit by the top ? I know that there is difference of power between them but that's not big deal cause here in France you can get some small spacelight (2Kw) or as someone said before you can turn off or switch some bulbs. I'm focusing on the look. I'm looking for a real soft lighting beam coming from the top of the table with the smallest shadow on the eyes and still a darkness part as far as you go from the table. I want to get my background totally black. If someone can advice me or maybe suggest an another unit it will be great. Have a nice day.
  10. Thanks guys for what you all said ! I already consider all of that when i'm getting a job but still is that i need to shoot to improve my skill and to get footage. I know that sometimes i'm putting myself and my reputation in troubles but what can i do ? Take care all of you.
  11. Hi Guys ! What about the fact that you're gonna work with a new camera that you don't know ? I mean, the script isn't good, the director is lost and the budget isn't enough to achieve the look that the script diserve but you're gonna use a new tool that you don't know...is this a good point to go and shoot it ? That's reason why i'm doing a project right now. I know that i'm putting myself in trouble with doing shitty budget, shitty script, shitty produce film but it's been 6months that i didn't shoot and i really need it to fell alive, to feel back my sensations. While i started, 2 years ago, i was accepting everything and i did plenty of bad movies(i didn't do a great job on lighting too). Right now, i'm looking more seriously every offer but you never know...i mean you know but you hope that it's not gonna happen ;-) Also, how can i do if i have to say no to every bad movie. I'm young and it's the only way for me to get experience and footage for my reel... Anyway, take care all of you
  12. Hey ! I am a young French DP. I've almost the same career as you. I left school two years ago and i'm shooting as much as possible as DP. The bad part of it is that right now most of the people ask me for shooting video, that's driving me crazy  Anyway, know that in France, on short film, you're not paid so it's tuff to make a living. Otherwise, i really love you reel. You've some georgous shots. I wish i could have some like this in my reel. I'm on the way to set up mine soon but i really don't like my different footage :( Take care and good luck !
  13. Dear David, I'm going to shoot with the SDX900 and i post a topic about wich lense system to use with it for a minimum dept of field : PS Technik adaptor or HD lenses ? Go on the topic : http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...wtopic=8418&hl= If it can helps !
  14. Thanks again ! I really got the answer i needed ;-) I knew that the image quality is a very subjective point so i was just wondering a point of view. Thanks for yours. It match with my theory. I expected that with P+S Technik adaptor i'll lost some quality so i was already thinking to for HD primes. The examples you gave to me show me how the dept of field is already small, in a way. The only thing is i'm not going to get Digi Primes but Fujinon HD lens style cause of the budget. Any point of view or advice about the Fujinon ? Also, i'm wondering what is the lense equivalent between 35mm and SDX900 ? I mean, if i want the same frame as a 50mm in 35mm format which HD lense is going to be ? Then, i'm looking for a good monitor to see what i'm doing. I'm thinking to get a 14" monitor but what does that mean SDI ? Standard Interlaced ? If you have any advice again, let me know... Have a nice week end.
  15. Thanks a lot. So you're saying that going HD lenses directly on SDX900 will be better in image quality than with the P+S technik adaptor, right ? I understand that with the adaptor i'm getting a fake small dept of field but i'm also loosing quality. I'm just scared that with HD lenses i'm just gonna ended with a regular video dept of field and that's really disturbing. Again, shoot with HD lenses will offer a really good optical quality but still a very wide dept of field ? I would like to get closer as much as i can to an 35mm dept of field to be able to play with foreground and background in focus or not. Any thaughts ? Have a nice day.
  16. Hi Guys ! I've a question, maybe stupid. Do you think that shooting with HD lenses on a SDX900 are going to give a kind of smallest dept of field that with a 35mm lense adaptor ? What about the light quality lost ? I've to say that after i planning to blow it to 35mm. Hope to heard from you. Thanks in advance.
  17. Thank you all !! I was shooting the last couples of days so i was far from the forum. Anyway, i'm gonna check out all the website you mentionned. I really want to use K40 because of the particular look of this stock so... I have one more question to you guys : I would like to blow up to 35mm the K40. So i'm wondering how it works ? I mean, if i'm shooting 1.85 for the 35mm part, can i ask the lab to blow the K40 into the 1.85 aspect ratio ? Thanks again for your help.
  18. Thank you k3shooter ! You were right, I'm gonna shoot K40. Anyway, does the lab in kansas have a website ? Alsao, i knew that switzerland was a great lab and i was thinking that it would take 2 or 3 weeks before to get it back. In fact, they sending my test back to me after 1 week. I didn't see yet.
  19. Hi everybody ! I'm wondering is there any Lab in the USA that process Super 8 ? I'll prefer to get one in NY... In fact, i'm planning to shoot a short on Super 8 in the US, i am from europe, and i would like to process the film out there thant to bring it back in the plane and to send it to switzerland. Hope someone can advice me ;-)
  20. Hi ! I am a French Lighting Technician but i'm also shooting as Camera Trainee since a couples of months. So, i'm based in Paris but i'm thinking to travel and to go to NZ. I'm wondering how the buiseness work out there and where is the biggest spot (Wellington or Auckland) ? If someone can help me out, thanks.
  21. Hi Guys, I'm looking after the manual of the Panasonic Varicam AJ HDC27F... and every where i look i've found two different serial number  One is AJ HDC27F : P and the other one is ending with a V  What's the main difference ? I don't get it, i'm sorry. I thought it was like PAL or NSTC, maybe something relaited to that ? Help me out please ! I'm sure that's nothing. Best Regards to all of you.
  22. HI ! Thanks for all the advices. I'm sorry if i'm a little bit late to answer you but i was far from the web for a while, i was scouting the locations. Anyway, i'm going to get a Sony 9044 color monitor. Is it good enough? Also, i don't understand how to calibrate my monitor with the color bars. In fact, i'm not getting with the camera the same color bars as the one on the website : http://www.videouniversity.com/tvbars2.htm In fact, i'm just getting the 18%grey to the black, not the bellow ones... Do you know what i mean ? What should i do ? Otherwise, i'm already looking on the forum about it. Best regards.
  23. Hi Guys, I'm going to shoot a short film as DP with a Canon XL2 and mini35 adapter instead of an XL2 with 24x36 lenses (too long :P ). I have some question about shooting this way : 1. Do i need a bridge plate and a sliding base plate if i want to attach a Matte Box as Arri MB16 ? What should i do to get my matte box on with a follow focus ? DO i need rods or the adapter provide rods already and in that case wich size of rods ? 2. Can i put a 35mm zoom lense on an 35mm adapter ? It is not to heavy for the mount ? Any particular problems(optic) with doing that ? 3. What kind of monitor should i need to juge what i'm doing ? By the way, while i'm doing the color bar on my monitor, the white have to be pure white or 18% gray ? 4. What about shooting hand held with this 35mm adapter ? Do i need a special set up ? Thanks.
  24. So now i think i got you ! That means : i've to go very wide with my selection of "still camera" lenses if i want to try to match with a film lense serie... The widest is a 14mm ! I think i'll choose from the 14mm to 50mm. The 50mm will be on the XL2 look like a very long lense (telephoto). Also, you said that the magnification is 4.4 but on the manual they said that if i'm shooting 16/9 it's going to be 7.8 so a 50mm "still camera" lense will be a 6.4mm video lense? Right? Anyway, thanks. Did you ever shot with a set up like this? I'm wondering how many T.Stop i'm loosing with "still camera" lenses?
  25. Thanks but i don't understand  If i'm using a 24mm (still camera) focal lenght on a XL2 that means that in fact i'm shooting with the equivalent of 5.5mm video lens? To be more precise, a 24mm still lense on an XL2 is a very wide angle? I would like to precise that i'm going to use a XL2 with the still lenses series Canon EF so it's why i'm looking for an equivalency. Thanks again.
