Usually dops that come from the camera department understand better our job of camera assistants,as a second a.c. I find them easier to work with because they've been through the same difficulties;I think that coming up from the ranks gives you a great experience on the field but then you need a lot of other things to became a good dop!

Hi,I worked with the russian arm on a Volvo commercial just 3 weeks ago,we used the Preston system for focus and iris (that we rented with the camera equipment),for the zoom the russian arm guys had their own system that the dop could use from inside their vehicle along with the joystick for the Flight Head. It was shot on film,35 mmm with 5217 200T for exteriors and 5218 500T for interiors and exteriors nights.Often pushed 1 stop. The cameras were arricam st, arricam lt and arri 435. Cooke s4 and angenieux optimo 24-290 were the lenses (and some tele too). Bye.

If you can't have the entire camera crew for the tests you should try to get at least the first ac to check all the equipment or maybe you can ask the rental house if they know some local ac who is available to do just the camera test. good luck Simona

At the very beginning I managed myself with less expensive tools;after I saved some money the first things I bought was an harrison changing tent and a porta brace.What you really need is great love for this job,you have to work hard and for me it was an important thing to work with really experienced 1ac and 2ac who taught me a lot and even counseled me about what to buy.
