  1. Hey Rupe, I was actually supposed to go to VLN in Oct to help a director shoot but it just didn't work out as I got a little busy on my side, however it is a nice little place and since I dated a girl from there when I was in EU I would it it's a great spot to film as the outside scene of the city and the look of certain places are beautiful and don't need to do anything in terms of cinematography to aesthetisize moreover production is very cheap in Lith. I am very much interested in Eastern Europe and it's natural look as it totally contrasts from N. America, I myself just like foreign productions alot more as they are a little tougher (as their always low budget) and their just more natural! my best, Joey Dee
  2. Hey Jim, If you notice the woman gets annoyed by the violinist right, so she looks @ him and he stops, bascially the violin symbolizes pretty much "European Cinema" as it has alot of mellow-drama and so forth (which was a excellent choice of musical instrument for this clip as it was promoting foreign films @ the Chicago film fest). So finaly @ the last shot an old man comes to sit beside her and the violin comes back to reiterate that "Europeaness or Foreigness to the scene" and she gets annoyed only by the violinist and not the old man. Overall - well done clip, love the shots & the concept and I wish Justin the best. My best, Joey Dee
  3. WOW well done Frank!!!! Great to see many people succeeding and I wish you the best. The shot of Tito & Gonzalo is wow!!! For some reason that shot reminds me of a Brazilian film I seen last year: Pixote: A Lei do Mais Fraco. Well done and my best.! Joey Dee
  4. Hey Folks, I was reading this post: http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...showtopic=19232 - in which I found it very helpful along with that youtube example. My question is - how can i get the right amount of lighting (with blue gel) on my characters face without under or over exposing my scene? I have 2 (650) and 2 (1k) lighting gear along with all kinds of different color gels. The reason whY i want to use dark blue because my character will decide to take her own life (commit suicide) and to me that is a cold hearted thing to do and this is why I would like to use a dark blue color (as blue is associated to "cold") I am filming on a Bolex 16mm camera and using a 25mm lense and will be pretty much 1 - 3 meters away from my character. Also I will use a 75mm lense and will be 5 feet away and finaly i will use a 10mm lense and will be around 2meters away, I'm not sure if this info is asked for when you ask for help on lighting but I thought i would include it since I am new to this commity and I would like to be as specific as possible. So yesterday i was testing out the lighting set up myself and i put the blue gel on the 1k light and pointed it @ my character and turned the knob down on the light to get a hard blue color and it look very nice! but when I looked through the view finder it wasn't that clear, meaning it was still a little dark so how can I set up this scene properly? Should I point light to the ceiling and get it to beem down to the ground? Because if I point it in the same direction it kills the blue. Here's an example of what I would like (i know the mise en scene is favoured in blue) also I will be doing alot of close up shots so here is an example and just to be more clear, I'll show the location Im shooting @ - sorry for the long post but again I just wanted to give you as much information and get your expert advice. many thanks, my best, Joey Dee
  5. Hey Folks, Thanks alot for the help... I did a typo in my post, i said that "I ruined a suite to shoot" what i meant to say was "I rented a suite to shoot my short film" so sorry for the confusion. Ok now all the equipement that I got is rented and i shoot on sunday - so with your experience as DP & Cinematographers what do you suggest with the lenses that I have to get extreme close ups and how much lighting would u suggest because I know Bolex camera need alot of lighting (or atleast thats' what I was told). Here are the Kern lenses that I have - I pretty much played with the settings all day and I got my own settings but I would like to hear your expert advice (it's always good to learn from others). Also I dont' know why the view finder on the Bolex is soo hard to see even when i adjust the view finder focus, I spoken to other people and they have told me Bolex is like that because it's an old camera. Also for a nice d.o.f I would light the background softly? and focus on my character in the foreground while the background is out of focus right? 10mm lense 25mm lense 75mm lense You can see info on the lense @ the last part of this page: http://www.bolex.ch/NEW/?p=3 my best, Joey Dee
  6. Hello everyone :) Ok so here's my question - I have a Bolex 16mm camera with 3 kern-pallard lense. 10mm (ultra wide) 25mm 75mm I thought when i got the 75mm lense that I would be able to get a extreme close up as I will be filming the intimenancy of my character. I wanted to get a extreme close up on the eyes, lips, the issue is with the 75mm it only focuses on 5ft away therefor I can't single out a specific part of my characters face and the 100mm only focuses @ 8ft thats' why I didnt get it. However the 25mm focuses @ 1 feet away and is not as bad as I thought... SO my other question is - with the lenses I got do you think they would fit this scene view the images as I have ruined a suite to shoot my short film - I also got a lighting kit with gels covers, I have 2 1000's and 2 650's I am old the bolex needs alot of lighting to get a nice quality shot. I am just wondering what is your take on the bolex and if im on the right path with my equipement. Please reply as I am curious for your comments. my best, Joey Dee
