  1. " (Format size DOES matter)" i 100% agree with you but with large formats we have a fantastic film support but terribles optics, nothing in the range (primo, cookS4, or master prime) and i'm also concern about a possible digit. there might be a combo for the best result (15/70) might be to good for exemple maybe the best solution is around vistavision with master prime with a 5.7K Digit after a pull down process?? that's the kind of solution i'm thinking about. but before going trhue expensive tests, what is viper, c-mos and DAlsa comparable to in film resolution wise???? thank you in advence
  2. are you telling us that pixels are reacting just like silver grains on film????? what i don't get is how a very low light (flasing the shadows) in the d-min can add 1 stop in the high lights(d- max) at the opposit of the curve what does the curve looks like at the vectorscope? gama curves and video signals have such a different look that it's amazing to imagin they react just the same? cool thow keep to inform us with your tests
  3. verry interesting answers thank you but my concern is definatly what is the best filming format and postproduction for a 4000 X 4000 pixels minimum on a video projection system on an imax dôme. theire might be several solutions (i hope) but in term of filming formats what is the scale of quality : is it digit of 65mm in ?K ? 35mm DMR process but i do not what to go back to a positiv dalsa 4K Viper 4K if you had no problem with the budget but the best video image to project what would you choose? david i do not catch the "doing it on the cheap" trick and film can be shot and processed with a concern of "grain zero" isn't it john?
  4. hi i have a theorical question for you does it make sens to compare 4K HD and film (large format, 65mm) with a 7K digit. if the final product has to be screened with the best ever projection system at an imax dome (for exemple) does this kind of test make sens according to your experience?
  5. it realy sounds like a great camera. you finds lots of menus knee (point, slope), matrix, master black, black strech, dtl,but only 3 differents gamas. it's a verry complete cam 16/9 native, progressive or interlace. i'm not familiar wiyh the varicam but panasonic is doing a great cam with the aj-hdx400. if you are confortable with the sonys F900 you'll find it easy to use
  6. hi i'm doing a prep tomorow mornig for a fiction (short) with this cam i'll talk to you soon about it ;)
  7. hi all i recently saw a short film (shot in viper) a sequence at night at a car wash with a dialogue. it reminded me some films shot in 65 mm, it was so bright, soft and beautifull. and it was projected on a bad video projector. Caroline Champetier was theire to talk about HD in general and screened 4 exemples of films she did. one in AGDV 100 (amos gitai) one in Varicam (benoit jacquot) one in F900 at Pierre Cardin's studio and this short in viper i know it is 4:4:4 but what lens are used in viper, and is that quality of the image always that good?
  8. continuity made by the lightning is not my point on this post. make the takes to match so you can tell a situation properly is a real job in the film. director, DOP/operator, script and editors are involved in making it happens but who is finaly responsable when it doesn't match exactly, when you discover(when editing) it doesn't work? i'm talking about : -movments -large shot or close up -understanding a discution at 2 or 3 -follow a character from A to B location -make undesrtand you are the next day, month, year do you have exemples of tricks for continuity that works good and other that doesn't work at all except the rule of 180° which is the first one .....
  9. yes u only want to use unde water special light meter. watchout if you have to focus, marks are different from air marks.
  10. could we try to compare it with Tom Stern style ? he was his gaffer and is now a DP " master of the dark"

  13. no cam for rent in morroco, we are used to rent them from spain, excellent stuff . i heard about studios in africa(not south africa) with brand new arri equipment (lighting, cams) never used for years, i think it was in Mali. good luck
  14. ? for me to handle a 435 or an arri III is the same? i may be wrong but they are balanced the same and have about the same wheight
  15. no problem but why 98? anyway the cam will go thrue test for insurance coverage, so aske your assistant to shoot a chart at 98 in adition to 24, that's the only way to be 100% sure.
  16. hi i think this post could be an exelent oportunity to warn newbies about what they'll met with such projects. about the "flags" or red lights david was talking about. theyre are many categories of films "conditions wise" you can be proposed. the friends ones : are made by your friends, no rules exept having fun and experience the unknowns ones : is there a production? how many days? hot meal, transportations? how many shots a day (plan on a good 1 shot 1 hour) is th crew coming from dp or prod or director? is it a first film don't hesitate to ask as many questions as posssible you can ad more flags from your experience newbies are all pasionate and willing to work for free but plenty of crap projects won't learn much instead of doubt and will bite in this amount of passion. being profesional is first judging a project: will it bring to you more that what it take from you? if it's the case do it ! it' s amazing how those jobs are the same whatever the country is !!
  17. shoulder mags exists but it's rare, without, it's a nightmare to handle !!! after 10 mm your arms will be shaking like hell short view finder comes with a dedicated door but you won't have video with this item. long rods could be a solution but the best is to find the proper mag even if you have only one, it makes so much of a difference
  18. hi arturo in barcelona chek monkey film : an exelent production company for comercials... tel 932 525 200 studios : platos de barcelona tel : 93 474 01 25 camera rental house : service vision, google the adress, is where they build a lot os cranes, 3d heads and scorpio equipment i was verry impressed buy the spanish industry compare to the french one, they have excellent equipment, crews and way of life. and mr salzman why don't we take a cafe in a terrasse in paris one day as spring is coming ;)
  19. hello i was told to control white and black shadings after each change of lens. how do you make this do you control it all the time? - are shadings only "electronicals deg nd's" or something i do not catch? another question (sorry) i'm gona recieve a US 900 how do i match it with my 50 hzt lights here in europ? if i film interlace? can i choose 50I on yours cameras menu? thank you in advance, you super skilled peaple of the forum
  20. hi arturo do braziu there are plenty of things going on in europe now, but the market is verry tihgt. market is big in eastern europe where rates are lower. spain is doing not to bad as far as i could see from shooting over there. france is big for production but slow for shootings and england..... is an island ;) welcome in europe anyway and if you look for an AC, well.. keep in touch.

  22. some ruff and cheap test mark one frame thrue the lens hole, roll the camera for 5 sec and count the perfs cam speeds ups and slowes down. then you need a stoboscopic gun set at 24 or 25 fps that freez the movment. you can use those guns at rental houses another test i did on a set i had a doubt is : set your cam in front of a tv at 25 fps as the tv is in 50 hertz the bar should freez then set your cam at 24 fps the bar should go down slowly same at 30 fps for tv set at 60 htz oldies can slow down when batteries are dead
  23. don't you feel the real problem is somewhere else? there insn't enouth jobs for everybody! this is why everybody looks himself in a competition all what i red so far is a result of the "colateral damaged " of an industry in crisis. there is no enemy in term of white, women, single leg, blind operator :),.... but a lak of jobs. if there where work for everybody you woulnd't ask yourself about girls having jobs and not me. you wouldn't have time to post here (except D.Mullen who is a superheroe).
