  1. I remember reading somewhere that it is supposed to be shaking, (monofiliment) something about the camera can't see it that way or something, anyway if you are supposed to shake it you should use something else. This is in relation to the bike thing, not the UFO discussion.
  2. does anyone have a link for where to buy an air mortar for close up head shot's. I was watching Dawn of the dead's dvd extra where they explained how they did they're head shots, it looked like a good idea, but when I went to buy one I looked for a while and had no luck.
  3. have you ever thought of using a method like in the volkswagon commericial, have your charachters driving along in a car using blue or green screen. As they are driving you see and S.U.V head straight for them and apperently ram they're car. To achieve this have somone with and S.U.V drive towards a zoomed in camera a high speed. Then in a new shot shake the car throw fake glass at the driver, have his head hit the dash whatever. Then Cut to Black. The car the charachters were in is rolled over, have after effects fire burning in the backround. The car already prepped is sitting they're in no danger. This is alot easier because if you roll over a car for real, maybe some elements won't happen, it might not look as good as desired. now with the cut you can have a door hanging off, glass everywhere, blood coming out of the car, Oil leaking ( fake oil of coarse ) and you control it.
  4. sorry about the name mix up, must not have been paying that much attention to that article to make that mistake, although it isn't proven has anyone actually tried this method and seen anything different? ohh yea and Paul I think Brian De Palma already ripped off, I mean payed a generous homage to Eisensteins Battleship Pomtempkin.
  5. The other day I was reading an article on how to give your shots a 3rd dimension and there was something called the golden mean, so I looked it up. Apperently in the Battleship Pomtempkin this concept was used, surley by Stravinskey's cinematographer whose name i don't remember. But I still am unsure of how to aply this concept, can anyone explain it to me. ( also I have seen and I also own a copy of Battleship Pomtempkin )
  6. they were pretty good at hiding those wires though, check the paws and maybe you'll see something, even frame by frame, once they trip him it will hard to see the wire blur because of the massive motion blur of the dog and maybe even any dirt that was kicked up. I really don't know becuase I don't own a copy, and was the scene supposed to be at night because if they used fishing line that would be hard to pick off with the added darkness.
  7. I've got a scene where the charachter is sitting in what essentially is an abandoned house. The question is how to light it, I've got power covered but, high key, low key, maybe a single source to show the abscence of celing or wall fixtures. How should I light the backround? I've never even thought about doing this kind of scene before but has anyone else? Any suggestions would help.
  8. Recently I was watching Apocolypse Now and Coppola was mentioning Sensor round a new technology at the time which made these gun sound f x buzzz a little or that rumble that you can hear. How can I get my hands on something like this within a moderate price range or can it be replicated with audio effects on editing software?
  9. I just checked out this article http://www.bluesky-web.com/texture.htm Is there anything more I can learn, I think I know what the guy is talking about is there any links that anyone knows or articles on this site
  10. hey I'm a young kid, and I know I don't command the respect of soe studio exec, but I'm trying to produce a show at my local T.V studio. The problem is that I asked for the rights to air clips from upcoming movies on the program yet I have yet to get a responce it's been two months. now I'm almost positive I contacted the right deparment and the description on the department matched what I was doing. I sent an email saying who I was and exactly waht I wanted but I havn't even heard a no. Any advice?
  11. hey you are right that Stone used projection in Natural Born Killers, but in the commentary he said it was an incredible hasstle. Plus what's your budget? Projectors can be expensive, yeah you can rent one but if you need to get one for a few days that's another hole in your pocket, with that money, make yourself a blue or green screen, I did and it's helped alot. Projection can look better than blue or green screen, but if you do go all out, get creative, there's this great shot in natural Born killers when Mallory is Driving down the street on her own and she drives by this guy on the street mugging another guy, the guy eventually shots the victem but in the back is this huge projection on the wall behind him of like a wolf or soething, that's when Stone brought the hassle situation up but unless you plan to do something like that I reccomend the blue or green screen
  12. hey, are your actors trained in fighting if so stop reading and stop worrying and shoot your scene without worry if not read on, I have always used my friends in my movies cause that's all we have, I've found that body movement is key, guy throws a punch the other actor really has to move, You can still use pads, take the close up advice, have Charachter b in front of the camera, shoot it over the shoulder and let him hit a pad, on characher a's chest. Next shot is charachter A falling without the Pad. If you watch Raging Bull you'll get a lot of cool teqniques that you can do and that was an idea I got from one of the fights in that. I hope that helped Good luck
  13. Hey don't count on the street lamps to illuminate your shots, I've shot under one before and it still came out too dark. If I were you and you needed moonlight here's what you do, do that actual pull in 50ft shot at night or if your crew is willing do it in the morning and darken it in post. For the walking down the street part shoot it day for night on a cloudy day, set your white balance on your camera to indoor, or buy a day for night filter,( look it up on google ) after that bring your exposure down to the desired level, this should work nicely.
  14. Well what do you intend to show? the Tea doesn't have to be hot if your just having one actor throw it as stated earlier. If you want a shot of an actor with steam coming off his face and or clothes then there are some methods to acomplish this. You can try using a normal smoke machine and blowing a little bit right next to the actors face, use a tight shot and it will look good if the actor screams and stuff. There are also special effects that can work for a brief shot. Even the cheapest online download has a smoke effect that you can composite into the video with little or no effort. finally you can make the cup look like it's steaming by getting some dry ice and finding a way to get it to stick to the bottom of the cup. if you have some water in there smoke will pour out even as you throw it. The water is just cold so it can hit actor B Hope that helped
  15. yea, but it's usually just a scramble to fit into the time limit, I tryed writing everything from a Doomsday clock scenerio, the last 100 seconds or a race, the last 100 seconds of a gameshow as well, that was the best one I felt becuase All it required was the host saying and we're back, playing some corny music, then have the contestent, sweating out the answer to this question for a million dollars or something but I also want to incorporate different ideas, the idea of only motions and quick cuts into whatever piece I do. And Also to try to incorporate humor into it, since I'm a young director I don't want to look like I take myself to seriously.
  16. I'll Definetly Pick Up Frailty when I see it, I also like The Plate Idea, Somtimes I'm Short On lights, and I know The Poor Man's Process Wouldn't work For Day Scene's either so next Time I shoot a car scene I'll take That into consideration. Thanks alot for the ideas guys.
  17. Hi, I recently heard of this trick for lighting car's called the Poor Man's Process and I want to know more about it, the teqnique as I understand it is to use a sitting car in a sound stage, have a couple studio hands rock it at various times, add in some sound effects, and hang some lights on a string and move them in the back window of the car to simulate headlights. I know this teqnique was used in "The Godfather" in the night driving scenes so obviously looks pretty good. If anyone knows anything more about this it would really help me out.
  18. I really like The Idea Of The Quick Cuts, That's something I think I can Pull Of Pretty easily, the story is going to be hard, making something good and short, the hardest part I think will be getting a backround story that will explain itself. Anyway I really appreciate all the help with this
  19. Thankyou, I think that is definetly something I will consider for the piece, I think that will definetly help create a good piece.
  20. You will definetly have to look for a little but videomakers past magazine section will definetly have Information on all that and I've seen it before, sorry I don't know the actual issue but anything after 2004 should have alot about that.
  21. agreed, Marty has really gotten jipped over the years, the oscars is kind of a joke anyways, it's more about popularity than actual talent, In my opinion the Departed wasn't Scorsese's best work but the fact it won him the oscar was great. Hopfully the other directors can take a page from Scorsese's book and wait they're turn, if the keep putting out good movies then they will get the oscar someday.
  22. Hi, I'm hoping to enter this 100 second film festival, the main challenge is directing a movie in that short time span. How should I pace it, how should I shoot it, what should the actors be doing? Any advice will help alot.
