  1. OK ... Arri Munich called and they can do it. I was just hoping some one might know of a company in the US who could do the it for me. Any leads appreciated. Thanks C
  2. Looking at an older Arri BL3 and was wondering if someone would be so kind as to clarify a couple of points for me. I have attached two photos. 1: The gate appears to be a full Aperture Standard 4 perf frame. 2: The ground Glass appears to be a 1:1,37 Academy Aperture What would I need to do to shoot Super 35mm on this camera? 1: Change the gate? 2: Change the ground glass? 3: Realign / re-center of the PL mount/flange? Any tips, advise, pointers, direction appreciated. Regards Chooser
  3. Hi Alan .. just wondering if you had any luck with finding a manual? I have a BL3 and am on the hunt for one as well. Thanks Chooser.
  4. Hello ... just a question about storing processed 35mm film. I have a new chest freezer which is not in use. Just wondering if it would be ok to store processed film in it. I have been using to store unprocessed film on and off for a while. Is the humidity or lack of it a factor? Strange I was thinking of posting this for a few days now and thinking of John. Shocked to see his post today. I am sure he will be fine and back soon. Thoughts and prayers to you John. Off to give the family a hug.
  5. thank you. appreciate it.
  6. Hi Just wondering if some knowledgable person would know the difference between Cooke Panchros and Cooke Kinetal lens. Basically never used a Cooke Kinetal lens. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks
  7. many ... thanks appreciate the feedback / information
  8. BL3 and BL3 converted to a BL4 Hi just looking for some feed back on BL3's converted to BL4's. From what I can tell it's the view finder / optics are the main difference? Just wondering what if any, the difference would be between a factory BL4 and an upgraded BL3? I know a lot of factors involved, but just looking for general feedback and comments really. Points of note, watch out for's, operator feedback, variations in conversations etc. Thanks in advance.
  9. Just wondering if anyone had any info on this movie, which I really enjoyed btw, in relation to stock (internal and external) and possible filters used. thanks

  12. What is generally regarded as the best spot meter available today under $1000? .... alternatively, a list of the top 3-5 perhaps .... I know it's a personal thing ... but just curious on what recommendations would be .. thanks
  13. BTW: has anyone seen Alison Macleans short Kitchen Sink. OK it's nearly 20years old, I think I saw it as a short, prior to a Film Festival Feature when I was in NZ as a kid, boy it was an absolute killer ...
  14. well ..... I am trying to doing it, 35mm, 40,000ft and counting, lots of dailogue, shot in two countries, small spooky drama actually. However as with P Jacksons first feature, it has taken a good 14 months plus of part time shooting. Can be done. Did an interview with Mr Jackson back in the end of the 80's, he had vision if not financial means at that time. Alison Maclean got absolutely hammered after Crush at the beginning of the 90's. Nikki Caro shot all her early shorts on a shoe string. All children to a degree of the early Geoff Murphy / Roger Donaldson / Sam Neil punk just do it attitude. Bruno Lawrence deserves a mention here as well. Lee Tamahori, Vincent Ward, Jane Campion (and many more) and a list of new comers, Taika Waititi and Toa Fraser to name a few, look them up on the web / IMDB. Never ever let jaded technicians, engineers and money men say that it cannot be done. If you have the vision and drive and some god given talent you will come through in the end. Not, Never and will ever be easy. Easy is working in an office on salary for the rest of your life. Nothing wrong with that, if you can be happy with it, but if you are, then odds on you aren't reading this tonight, today, this morning .............. Sorry for the rant. ps: own cameras are a major plus
  15. Kind of thought the Arri, logically, German, but the Aaton seemed such a nice light fit, emotional French ..... appreciate the feedback , all the best cheers ...... btw no 1000's just quick changing 400's thanks again
  16. I have a two shoot, mostly internal bedroom and kitchen scenes. I fear my trusty blimped BL2 will be a tad to noisy in close, one of the rooms is quite small. Looking at renting a kit. Really just wanted some feedback on the two cameras of choice, Aaton 35lll or Arri BL4. (A BL Evolution is also on the table) The Arri seems pretty straight forward, but the Aaton is a good size, and had nothing but great shoots with the XTR Prod, although the 35lll's mag loading seems more effort. Noise is the main factor though, well that and weight as will be using a small dolly and gib set up. Running through both cameras at the rental house. But again just want a bit of feedback, general pointers, thoughts? Thanks in advance. BTW: The dialogue sequences in Lost In Translation, where shot with the Aaton .. yes? ps: T1.3 Zeiss super Speeds the difference between MKll and lll? .... Mr Low budget here, only really use Cooke Panchros and Zeiss Standards
  17. Hi ... thinking of looking into doing some courses for DI and Telecine operator. Can anyone give some advice or help point me in the right direction ... many thanks in advance
  18. I used a bunch of misc 16mm cameras when I first started shooting film. Then cut a deal to use an XTR Prod with a canon 8-64mm zoom with video tap. What a great set up. Light, portable and great images. Of course when I looked to buy a camera the XTR was a little of of my range. So purchased a very nice LTR S16mm. Has an Aaton mount as opposed to a PL. Ended up with a Canon 7-56mm zoom non S16, and a Zeiss 10-100 S16. Great for music video, short films. Never pushed it to a feature but think would do nicely. But no video tap is a negative. Really depends what you want to do. There is a certain freedom with your own camera, but you must use it to justify buying one. I have a BL series 35mm which I use mostly and to be honest for all but non budget work, I went back to renting an XTR. So have a really great LTR, lenses, legs, FF, MB. customer pelican cased blah blah, that only does one to four jobs a year, if that. Great to cut youor teeth. Depends, if you are creating your own work as a director, then yes freedom. Gun for hire DOP / Camera OP. Then people will want you for your skills not your camera. Rent the best if the budget allows. If it does not, and the project grabs you or its your own project then the LTR comes in very handy. Sorry for the rant .... all the best
  19. Hi All Just wondering if anyone would be so kind and give me some feedback on the above lenses. Any background or history on these would be appreciated. General feedback. How would the the Zeiss Planars compare to say a set of Cooke Panchros lenses. Were they a low cost range of lenses from Zeiss? Know nothing about the Som Berthiot Pan-Cinor 3,5/38-155 at all? Many thanks Chooser
  20. Greetings ... I need to store a large number of film rolls. I have a spare freezer. Can I store them in that? States below 13 degrees on the can, but have been told it is OK to freeze film. What about film that has been exposed, can I freeze that? Periods of time? Many thanks.
  21. Howdy ... just wondering if anyone has any info or had any experience in converting a BL2 to 35mm, also converting from standard arri mount to PL ... any pricing, leads, pit falls, feedback appreciated ..... thanks
  22. I believe this is the right forum for this qustion. Just wanted to know the advantages of Super 35mm over 35mm. Just wanted to know how DOPs handle the different ratios. Not looking for anything specific, just wanted some general comments and feedback or pros cons, like, don't like etc .... thanks
  23. I would like to thank Mr Mullens, Mr Case, Mr Worth, Mr Sprung and Mr Bunnies. I would also like to thank David, Dominic, Thomas, John and er Mr Bunnies. And of course all the other kind members of the cinematographer.com academy and members of the foreign online forum press association ... and my mum.
  24. thanks for the reply dominic. appreciated. and no thomas, its not a "diss" as you put it but a genuine question like the original one. i will be a little more careful when selecting forums to post in future, as i do not want to step on anyones toes here. i like everyone else appreciate mr mullens advice. thankyou.
  25. if I was going to DVD or digi I would not be be asking the question, since I actually do that for a living. It was shot 35mm and obviously if a "neg cutter" is involved there must be a print involved. if this is not the right forum more than happy to post it else where Mr Mullen ... just let me know which forum you feel is best. don't want to blurr the lines between "departments"
