  2. Rich Davis used to shoot a lot of the Cribs shows and Josh Harrison used to assist for him. I think they're both members of the forum, so you might consider sending them a PM. I'm pretty sure Josh did pull focus. Cribs used to be pretty much all steadicam (not sure now).

  5. I shot some stuff at 12,800 ASA a few years ago. It WAS fun, and in my opinion, yielded a very romantic look. I'd like to try it in color sometime, although I doubt I'll like it as much. Here's an examle:

  7. That's an 800ASA (the T3200 is 800ASA but designed to be pushed two stops if memory serves) stock being pushed three stops. I would think you'd at least want to start with 5279 and then push it a couple stops.
  8. Maybe in the future you should try to get at least one person who knows what they're doing on your crew, i.e., your key grip or gaffer. Explain to production that things will run better that way and will save money in the long run. A film set is not film school. I know everyone has to learn somewhere, but having a whole crew who is learning is a bad idea.
  9. I can't help with the pinouts, although I'm pretty sure they're posted at on the steadicam forum. You can use either the aux port or the 4 pins on the back. I use the aux port with my preston, but I know some people use the 4 pins.
  10. A friend of mine shot a film a year or two ago on S16. The director was a total film neophyte and was financing the movie herself. I think it was a few hundred thousand dollars. Anyway, he told her that he didn't want to have a monitor on set, and she said OK. So they shot the whole film without a monitor and they worked as they used to in the old days...the director watched the take and the operator told her if the take was good or not. There were no problems, no surprises, and the film looks great. I'd really love to work that way sometime. As a steadicam operator, not only do I have a handful of people (many times more) watching the monitor, but I have to make sure that I provide a good wireless signal so that they can see the take. I've worked it out quite well now, but when I was starting out my wireless was a bit shaky at times, admittedly. I'm not a video assist operator.....I spend way too much time dealing with that crap! I've done so many extra takes because video broke up for half a second....it's just silly. The dependence on the monitor is downright ridiculous at times. When video assist became the norm, a certain amount of trust between the DP/director, and operator vanished. Now they don't need to trust their operator as much, because they're looking over his/her shoulder constantly. OK, sorry, rant over!

Please go there with any further political talk that doesn't relate to cinematography or the film business in some way.

Without you there would be a severe lack of ego, and a severe lack of insults based on nothing. Please never leave! We'd really miss all that great stuff. And I'm obviously too stupid to figure out what all these letters and words are without your constant instruction, so thanks for that. You're the greatest!

  15. Actually, since the audio starts during the tirade and not before it, I would guess that they rolled with the specific intent to record it, very likely at the producers request. It was a rehearsal, not a take, otherwise they would have had video assist of the incident instead of just audio. Here's the Aint It Cool News Story about this.   16. Then obviously this wasn't a a hissy fit, because it fits the description of assault. I guess not everyone here thinks that threatening your co-worker with physical harm is a big deal. Or maybe they only think it's no big deal when a movie star is doing it....

Great, so like you said before.....YOU can do it, but no one else can. I'm glad you decided to re-iterate exactly what you said before. Very helpful.
  18. If you're unhappy with their work or they're not doing their job. You really think Hurlbut should be fired because Bale had a ridiculous tantrum? Wow. So you're equating what Hurlbut did (adjusting a light) with being almost as bad as setting fire to the set or killing the director? You certainly have a skewed view on what bad behavior is. All this talk? You mean the ONE mention of it? If someone actually was fired for getting berated by an actor, I think the studio lawyers are smart enough to know that they have no case. I guess don't understand that you can't fire someone because their co-worker threatened them and went nuts. Oh, so YOU did it, but no one else can. I see. That makes perfect sense.
  19. Why the hostility? The post he was referring to had absolutely nothing to do with cinematography or the initial topic. I agree with Stuart. If he wants to dispense his political beliefs he should do it somewhere else.

  21. Wow! I'm really surprised at the amount of people here defending Bale. And I'm just as surprised at the amount of people making assumptions about what Shane Hurlbut did or didn't do. We don't know the context of what happened, so I don't think assumptions are in order. Bale was very obviously out of line. I don't care if Hurlbut ran through the set naked and screaming, Bale's reaction was WAY too much. He threatened physical violence to a co-worker. I don't see how anyone could think that this behavior is acceptable. Being an "artist" is no excuse. "assault: A crime that occurs when one person tries to physically harm another in a way that makes the person under attack feel immediately threatened. Actual physical contact is not necessary; threatening gestures that would alarm any reasonable person can constitute an assault. Compare battery." Judging by the sound only, this situation may fit the definition of assault. I'm not saying the police should be sent to pick up Bale, I'm just making a point.

You're right, they should give that money to the banks instead, or maybe AIG, and then those companies can give million dollar bonuses to more people and continue to manipulate oil prices so we can pay more for gas. That's a good plan... Seriously though, why not? The majority of the bailout money has been wasted, so they may as well give a little to Hollywood to spend too. Although a better use of that money would be nationwide tax breaks for film production.
  23. Well, he says that it was the 2nd time in the audio.... We also don't know what horrible offense was really perpetrated. It's hard to make excuses for the guy, at least at this point.
  24. You're contradicting yourself here I think. You say it was predictable, neat, and formulaic, but I think the fact that those things weren't resolved is proof that it wasn't formulaic, neat, or predictable at all. I like that this movie wasn't wrapped up with a bow on top. Assumptions can easily be made of course, but it was more powerful because of the fact that certain things were left to the viewers imagination. I loved that the camera literally followed the characters. I thought it was a great way to show the viewer their point of view. And the operating is fantastic! Great film.
