i think ultra contrast filters tend to lower contrasts and desaturate the colors a bit. i personally don´t like them and would recommend a pull-process to desaturate colors and get a pastel look, if it´s what you want to get...

@Chris: thanks! I´ll have in mind your suggestion and PM him!

In fact there is a certain trangresion of the main caracter. first it´s the one-man-lost-in-the-desert-thing and later on he finds a guy who helps him to kind of get out of there. shooting location isn´t certain yet, but probably it´ll be a desert in the north of patagonia. it´s more like a steppe... i like the idea of working with graded ND´s, I don´t think that the director wants a raw look like the one of no country for old man. i suppose there wont be any handheld shooting and if i´m getting right what he´s saying, he want´s a cleaner look, shooting on slow emulsions etc.

Thanks a lot, guys!

what is the place like? will you work with natural light? are there any windows in the background? i have been shooting on an airport too and i had quiet a problem with the ratio because there was a huge window in the background and i had to light a lot in the interior, otherwise the highlights in the background would have been blown out. usually there are a lot of practicals in airports like flourescent lights, mind your frame rate and power frecuency to avoid flicker too...

How did they achieve this look?

here they are -
I´ve been watching "Taxidermia" (2006 - D: György Pálfi, DP: Gergely Pohárnok). Great, weird movie and there is a scene wich is very bright (blown out skies, few details in the highlights) and the reds and the blues are very saturated. I´d remembers me of early russian documentary films that I´ve seen on TV. I´d like to know how you can create such a look. Is it only the stage- and costume design or did the probably push-process the film? I´m going to attach two stills of the film. I don´t know if it´s legal, but it´s for eductaional purposes ;) (I´m still a student...) Thanks in advance! Tebbe

Hi! I´ve been looking everywhere for the temperature range in which the camera "officially" works. And what about the price of the cam? Any help would be appreciated Tebbe

Hi! Does anybody know where to find technical specifications such as fps, shutter, weight etc for the Aaton Penelope 2? Thanks in advance! Tebbe

As far as I know only only the speed of "Showscan" varies from the 24 fps standard. I´m not sure about it´s standard frequency but wikipedia says that it is at 60 fps...

Lighting advices for this location?
Tebbe Schoeningh replied to Tebbe Schoeningh's topic in Lighting for Film & Video
First at all, thank you for your advices. @edward: actually we want to shoot it at late afternoon, because the windows face west. i don´t have a colormeter, so i won´t be able to measure light temperature. is there any way to measure the general light temperature anyway? what exactly is muslin and gryffin? @logan i think you´re right. the lobby looks beautiful with natural light. anyway, the script and the directors idea of the image is not "natural" or "realistic" at all. there will be mainly a almost monochromatic look, only the main characters dress will pop-out. it´s a pink dancers-dress... @shane the airbase where we´ll shoot was built in the late 40´s and windows seem to be the same as 60 years ago. most of them are not tinted, they changed some and they look quiet greenish. if you have a close look at the picture, yo can see that some of them are coulured, some no. i hope that i´ll be able to correct that in post. if possible, i´ll go there and take some readings. there is no problem at all with the airport authorities, because the airport is kind of closed. there is an airbase of the argentinian air-force, and they will "park" some airplanes in the background for us ;) @john the window faces west. have you any suggestions to make the color of the dress pop-out? might it be useful to bring some more light to the area where the main character is located and slightly overexpose her? thanks again, everybody! tebbe -
Hello! We´ll be shooting a 5 min-shortfilm at the Morón airbase and the director would like to open the film with a wide-angle shot of the main lobby. I´m kind of worried about the background because it´s a 30X20m window where you see the runway and a lot of sky, in a way it´s like a huge backlight... Although we´re shooting on film (Kodak 7205 250D) I´m kind of worried, that our lighting equipment is not enough for a key and fill to compensate the windows in the background. We´ll have Tungsten units only (1X 5KW Fresnel, 2X 2 KW Fresnel, 2X 1KW Fresnel, 2X 2KW Open, 2X 1KW Open, 2X 650W Fresnel, 2X 300W Fresnel). Due to depth-of-field I want to work around f 8 or 11. I think that might help to bring down the sky. Although I want the light sources to be quiet soft, I´d rather prefer to bring them in directly with White Difusion than indirectly with bounce-cards... It might be possible that we can change some units for a Maxibrute. I´ll attach a foto of the main lobby of the main lobby. Thanks for any advice and your help! Tebbe

Fuji F-400 / Fuji F-500
Tebbe Schoeningh replied to Tebbe Schoeningh's topic in Film Stocks & Processing
Thank you very much, both of you! I´d love to do some tests, but I don´t know if well be able to. First problem is the equipment, I dont know if it will be available for some tests, second problem is the budget. I dont know if Fuji will give us some emulsions to test, and buying it will be almost impossible. I like the pic you attached, especially the skin tones look beautiful! Greetings Tebbe PS: I´m thinking of renting some lenses, because the Schneider Kreuznach Zoom which is coming with the Arriflex 16 BL we´re going to use has seen sharper days. Which lenses would you recommend? -

Thank you for this information! DO you know which filter exactly he was using on that train shot? I tried to get the ASC Article, but unfortunately the back issues are dated til 1996... :(
