  1. jacques tati. by the way, i also felt beat up after seeing domino. beat up and robbed for ten bucks. jk
  2. sorry. i'm just trying to say that the "academy" has a direction and a mission and seeing all the lame films they've chosen to hail as the best of the year really puts the "geisha" win in perspective. i didn't find the photography of "geisha" to be particularly interesting, but if "gladiator" can win best picture then who really cares what they do? jk
  3. "How can you compare a b&w film to a color one?" well easily actually, we do it all the time. i know that the cinematography of 'Andrei Rublyov' is better than that of 'Night Watch'...at least according to the standards i use to judge films. but the real issue is this: the academy awards have a certain perspective and it is one not shared but some filmmakers. watching 'geisha' win might seem funny, but placed in the context of the most recent winners for best picture, it begins to make sense: crash 2006 million dollar baby 2004 return of king 2003 chicago 2002 a beautiful mind 2001 gladiator 2000 american beauty 1999 shakespear in love 1998 titanic 1997 english patient 1996 braveheart 1995 and it goes on and on.... jk
  4. thanks santo, is this the gold standard to which you reffered? will it work with the 6080 (obviously with a 67 to 72 step up)? http://www.centuryoptics.com/products/prod...d_wac/index.htm jk
  5. do different wide angle options exist? is there a "gold standard" wide adapter? jk
  6. i'm implying that there is stolen greek art sitting right in front of us while we spend millions of your money and mine playing columbo in europe to satisfy an extremely powerful special interest group. but the fact that this is wrong is not my point, my point is that art is subject to the same political maneuvering as most everything else. in other words, and i don't want this to be mistaken for a political debate for it is one of art philosophy, who owns the marbles? jk
  7. "Tony Scott breaks things up into multiple tight angles and fragments and abstracts everything, there is a painter's sensibility behind the deconstruction" yes. a really bad painter. but on the other hand you are right that for every terrible tony scott film, there are a hundred even worse copycats. jk
  8. never listen to people who don't spell correctly. do listen to people who don't capitalize, however. jk
  9. "Looks a lot like the foreshortened stuff in ancient Greek frieze carvings, specifically the Elgin Marbles (Sorry, the Parthenon frieze, as recently defaced by the British Museum)." it's a crime that they haven't been returned to the greeks. we can find fifteen million dollars to "search" for stolen jewish art but can't do the right thing with the greek art sitting right in front of us. pathetic. jk
  10. that should go to "off-topic", unless you want to talk cinematography or, apparently, politics. jk
  11. worthless? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller...oughType=search i have used this meter for probably 10 years when i shoot super-8 (my 1014xls came with a broken meter...i never even cared enough to check it) i challenge anyone on this site to come up with more accurate readings in changing sunlight with a moving camera faster than i can using only this fisher price looking meter. it's all just practice and knowing what you want to see on film anyway...soon enough you'll end up not even using a meter except for the most difficult situations and for strobes. jk
  12. ummm....so what i've learned is that a bunch of dp's think george bush sucks and the film was edited too long. o.k., anyone have a comment on the cinematography? i do: it was good. the catchlights in the eyes were fine in my opinion, i mean, 90% of the films that made us want to shoot in the first place had completely unmotivated lighting. the aspect ratio was used nicely, and i thought the shot selection, while not ground breaking, worked. case in point: i got a real sense of vertigo during the kong action scenes including, of course, the empire state building scene. a lot of that is editing, but you can't edit together what you didn't get, and i feel that they got it. sorry to hijack the thread. jk

  18. my 1014xls is very loud. jk
  19. thanks. i did a google search for "nicad AA nizo" and came up with this: http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...?showtopic=5169 funny. so where can i get a 6080 with a healthy belt drive and a usable/chargeable battery? jk
  20. Hey guys, it's great how the super-8 folks have really shown up to cinematography.com. I own a couple canon 1014xls's, and even own a hand-made barney for them, but still too loud (and too hard to operate with the barney anyway). I'm interested in getting a nizo just for really quiet rooms, but was wondering if the other models (801's, s800's etc.) compare in terms of loudness. I really hope to find the quietest possible camera available. thanks, JK
  21. Yes, sorry Landon, I got a little excited! btw, I am related to several Arvanitis's. JK
