  1. I think what has been said already is extremely valid. It does sound to me though, that your AD wasn't aware of what effect he was having on you. It's not his responsibility to that but it helps if you understand how you are affecting others. Saying that, it is your ship. Therefore, if you feel someone is confusing you then you have to vocalise how their actions are affecting you. He is after all your AD! I personally like to SB everything, as I find that when shooting you can add and take away things with less of a chance of confusion happening. But really it is down to the Director whether SB happens or not.
  2. Maybe the sun has been spotted by the gaffer! ;) Sorry in advance to whoever thinks that is an appalling joke. Got a parking ticket today and it has affected many parts of myself, humour included! I think the falloff in the horizon is down to the small circumference of the moon couple with its rotation around the sun. It appears as a flat horizon (albeit on the piss) but I can only think that it is that....
  3. I am surprised to hear that a 30's film is being shot on HD. On those pics, is that not a EX-1? Lets wait and see before we judge....
  4. LOL!!!! Guys, you are right, it was a horrible thing to do. I must say that initially found it funny as it was so shocking. I just couldn't believe it..... Saul - I think the reason why no one backed the AC up was because he was slowing the shoot down with his constant stopping, whilst they were behind schedule. Nevertheless you are right to feel the way you feel about it....
  5. I think its a mix of what you are all saying. Some flare, Low con filter and then further adjustments in post.
  6. I've never done a DI. The reason being that DI's are quite expensive and the films that I've worked on to date, have not had an indulgent amount of money. I do however, read alot about other dp's really liking the DI. R Deakins for one, tends to use it all the time, by his own admission. To my eyes his work looks great! Could it be that it is so popular as shoot times these days are so compressed. You can always correct something in the DI thus saving more money doing it that way, rather than sorting out any creases on set, which we are suppose to do, but requires more time. The formula goes: more time = more money. I suppose I'll only really work it out when I do my 1st DI. Here's waiting....
  7. You could always ask R Deakins for a concise answer on what he did in Jarhead. www.rogerdeakins.com
  8. Hey Adrian, What you just said reminded me of a story that occurred many years ago on shoot in the UK. I won't name names, but a dp over here was so pissed off with his 1st constantly checking the gate after each take, that in the lunch break he stole his 1st's mag lite. Together with the mag lite, he took a polaroid camera with him to the toilet. Stuck the mag lite up his arse and took a picture of it. On returning from lunch and after the first take, the 1st did the usual and stopped to check the gate. He took his mag lite out of his pouch, put it in his mouth and removed the lens. As he was peering at the gate, the dp slid the polaroid in front of his eyes.
  9. There are quite a few books as already mentioned. Try Ansel Adams "The Negative". Also, as Saul mentioned shoot some film with a stills cam but I would shoot at 1/50 shutter.
  10. I think the lines around the eyes as they went from being young to just before their hair goes grey just looked fake and "made up". It really only worked for me, when they were at the last stages prior to death. Nice concept though!
  11. On second view, I think Jonathan is right. The bounce is not coming from ellipsoidal.......
  12. Hey Andrew, I don't own a streak filter(s) set. I don't get a lot of call to use them. When I have had the call to use them I just get them hired in. As for the size of the filter I believe I used a 4 x 5.65, but its been a while so I can't remember exactly.
  13. Hi Pascal, It looks like it could be a source 4 and it is definitely bounced of some silver foam core as a backlight. I also know from reading the AC mag edition, that had Perfume in it, that they used a chinese lantern on a stick for other CU's.
  14. Hi Andrew, I only used the square version. Apart from polas I'm not really a fan of the round filters.
  15. In the UK your LB is included in your hours. If you have a NLB then and you still finish at the agreed time, then it counts as an 1hrOT.
  16. you can also try straw 013 and CTO (1/2 or 1/4)
  17. It looks to me like there is a lighting fixture in play, but the sun is definitely in the right place to bounce the lighting the way it is set up.
  18. Hi Andrew, The link is for South London Filters http://www.camerafilters.co.uk/ You could also look in hire places such as Panavision, Take 2, Arri etc... Most of them will do a large array of filters. But to date I have found that the unusual ones that aren't used often are normally available at SLF. The guy you want to speak to there is Ceri. Good luck!
  19. There you go Javier. Jamie has hit the nail on the head there....
  20. No, not really....can't find an example to show you. My advice is do some testing prior to using it. Maybe you could post your results and thoughts!
  21. Stephen, I'm sorry but I can't put a face to your name. But I definitely remember your name.

How have you been finding it since you left? I've heard in the grapevine that about 90% of ppl in our year have left the industry.....

  22. Hey Javier, I've used them before and you have to be very careful with them. They are the type of filter that can make it all look really naff. In the UK they're called Streak filters they come in different grades. http://www.camerafilters.co.uk/page116.html
