  1. I could not disagree more.. there are very, very little Black Blacks in either Still Frame. Sure they look 'processed'... but High Contrast?.. No. I disagree. Flat and Pastel.. yes. Shooting on Film, Low Contrast and Flares... can equal= Soft Contrast Filters (Soft Cons)... not to mention a great Colorist!
  2. .....you have been reported. Ignoring two polite suggestions to be compliant with this forum's rules and actually continuing as if the Members 'owe you' some technical assistance is insulting to say the least. I can only imagine Mr. Reed offered assistance under the assumption you would become compliant with this sites rules. Good day.
  3. I think you are absolutely correct.... that is why we knock it down but still use it nonetheless . It makes sense because it gives us directional light. Most light we experience is just that. Directional. At times we do completely knock the rear wall or background down as much as possible and re-light it from a completely different angle.... and in a classical sense this is unnerving. Great for effect tho! Here ya go Satsuki FILM LIGHTING
  4. No problem... they just want to see your first and last name.. no big deal.... my first is David my last is Rakoczy... but it has a space between so it does not look like this Davidrakoczy... if your first name is Anroop and your last is Mri..... then have it as Anroop Mri. That is all. I have to be honest... that is a very difficult question you asked and I am not sure you will find what you are looking for here at a Cinematography Site. There may be some Director's Sites that will give you more insight. I always recommend getting on a Set somehow.. or even around a theater having Stage Plays (in your case) to watch other Directors in action. Behind the scenes bonus material on DVDs can also be very enlightening (esp Hearts of Darkness - the making of Apocalypse Now). The best would be some sort of Film School. Best of Luck!
  5. Per the rules of this forum, please go to My Controls and change your screen name to your real first and last name. The Members thank you in advance.
  6. Studio Depot Bulbtronics Filmtools Barbizon btw.. the unit itself is called a Lamp. The bulbs are called Globes.
  7. I agree, but that should apply to the rest of the Crew as well.... including the Talent. If you are working for Sony for the next year on a Series then ya, you are an employee... but if you are hop scotching from production to production (no matter what your title) you should be an IC (in my opinion).
  8. Well... it is done everyday :P and it doesn't have to be deep blue.. just add the 85 in the Transfer... tho like you, I almost always use an 85 of sort.... If Stewart gets back to us regarding what Filters are on his Camera... we can let him know a 'safe' asa/ iso setting... Until then...........
  9. Also worth considering is the duration... say you are hiring someone for just a day, or two or three... are they really an employee? Say someone works (with) you 6 to 10 days a year.. are they an employee? Should you be responsible for their healthcare just for a couple days?
  10. I think it has more to do with classical painting in that we tend to darken the edges of the frame.. drawing the focus of the viewer towards the interior of the canvas.
  11. btw.. what are you setting your 'Shutter Speed' to?... as that is the other half of the Meter equation.....
  12. um Dan... think for a moment. Firstly, most societies provide for a first and LAST name... for obvious reasons. So your attempt at political correctness may win (some) over... but not me. I know many Indians and they have a first and last name. Don't you know any? Paris is full of Indians! Secondly, I am not affiliated with the Book as Mr. Mullen will tell you. Now, if you don't like my responses to all the folks ignoring the rules of this forum then change the rules or... leave this forum.... or ignore what you don't like about my posts... <_< You act as if referring FILM LIGHTING is not sufficient enough though as anyone who has read FILM LIGHTING will tell you.. it is some of the best advice one can give.... If I had one suggestion for anyone interested in Cinematography... that book FILM LIGHTING would be it... as it is often the advise I give. I could not have given him/her better advice. If you don't feel it is enough... tough. If you don't like me calling on people who don't use their first and last name per the rules of this forum... tough. ...and on the extremely rare instance an aborigine Dp logs on using a single name and states "that is all I am called".. "that is all my parents gave me".. I have no doubt the 'Members' will understand. ...and to you Holland... you post before reading so I am just glad to hear you actually read one  Sincerely, from the Sunshine State B) ... and you can put your post(s) where the sun doesn't shine!
  13. .... and an even more important question is... "what do you want your Image to look like"? That should be question #1...
  14. Bruce, please forgive me, I know you did not mean it this way, so I just wanted to clarify, using an 85 on Tungsten Stock shot outdoors is not a 'must'.... as there are Artistic as well as Post choices that can affect whether one is used on a T rated Stock whether it be in front of the lens, behind the lens, at the Transfer... or not at all....
  15. I think you should reread what Mr. Keth wrote. He is correct. The fact that you write as if 8mm is different than 16 mm even though they are cut from the same sheet of emulsion demonstrates you have a lot to learn. I don't mean to be rude (nor did Mr. Keth I am sure). You can learn most everything essential in a couple passes through that Book. To figure your iso: Question #1. What Filters does your camera have available? ... that will be a large factor in deciding your asa/ iso rating.
  16. First of all buy this asap! FILM LIGHTING That being said, if you are shooting in Tungsten Light (3200k), the manufacturer recommends you rate it at 64... hence 64t. If you are shooting in daylight (5500k) you will need to use an 85 filter if you want the image to look 'normal'... thus you will have to open (lower the iso) 2/3 of a stop to accommodate the 85... by rating the 64t (with an 85 in front of the lens) at 40.... Of course you could just add the 85 at the time of your film to tape or data Transfer..... Get the book.. it is more involved than my three sentence explanation.
  17. .. be sure to use a capital 'H' in the word 'His' if you write the lyrics out to share with your friends and family! "Red, yellow, black or white... they're all equal in (His) sight"...... oh thank heaven... I knew (He) was an angel!
  18. Just in case you missed it Satsuki... Obama Praise Song I thought this only happened in N. Korea....
