  1. As a girl trying to get into grip/electric work, thanks for that advice. Especially, the pink tools tip. I haven't seen any sold around here though, so I may just buy pink tape and wrap it around, or perhaps the internet...hmm
  2. I know that was a waaaaay late response. perhaps for your future pa jobs.
  3. I usually bring at least: gloves flashlight-comes in handy every time tape measure mini swiss army knife (with scissors)- also realllly useful small note pad- good for taking food orders & peoples contact info at the end of the day purell hand sanitizer- you never know sharpie water- a ton even if you don't use all that stuff, people will impressed if you look prepared this website with free handbook might be helpful: http://www.noendpress.com/caleb/edtech/index.php it's just good stuff to know in general be prepared to do something tedious for a long time, try not to be too discouraged by it good luck!
  4. 1st- Congratulations! 2nd- I have a couple questions regarding interning for Panavison, do you know if there's an average age they hire around? I'm wondering if I apply when I'm 20 if I would still be too young. What are my chances if I haven't graduated yet, or haven't been to film school? - and not going or majoring in it. If anyone has any idea- thanks.
  5. Perhaps this should be moved to here: http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...hp?showforum=29 No matter what, just try to make it as easy to read as possible. No fancy fonts ect. I think you should do separate sections for separate job types. (Separating DP from Camera Loader etc.) Include anything you can -just make note of what was for a student film and what wasn't. However, try not to go overboard. "Dumb it down" if you have to.
  6. Thanks everyone for the inside info. It was all very helpful very helpful and now my mind has sort of changed. I think I'd just like to learn about everything in the grip/electric dept. for now, before I go choosing something to specialize in. I guess I really want to be able to switch positions, mix it up a bit from time to time. (positions within the same dept. though) Thank You!
  7. It's one of those random questions that I've always wanted to know but been afraid to ask. So, when big features film on location (from foreign countries to jungle etc.) & cast + crew = huge amount of people-- How do they put them all up? Do people get their own rooms ... that would be incredibly expensive... or do you have roomies? -If so, how do they work that out, by department or gender? Condos? And finally... the trailers- reserved only for the stars and the big shots or do grips/other crew get one as well to relax in while waiting/down time? -I know there might be a better place to wait if thats all you're going to do, but what if it's bellow zero and snowing or something? Just some thoughts running through my head.
  8. darn, i can't edit above post again. however, i was just going to say I considered using the last route I mentioned as still getting the job through craigs since they had originally posted through there. ...wanted to clarify so the continuity in the number of jobs off of craigs adds up better since i know i said i only got one from mandy. - don't know if anyone would do the math lol hope that actually makes sense now
  9. I did post this in your other thread, but just in case that thread gets closed: I'm a teenager...let me say that again...teenager- fresh out of high school. started with no resume at all since I didn't have any experience to list. -Yet, from the Los Angeles crew gigs section I've managed to complete 2 successful internships. Found 5 (*edit-actually 6) PA gigs and a even a small Grip job. I'm currently on my 3rd internship and it has just led me to find a steady paying job. I found ALL but 1 through Craigslist. (the other was off of Mandy) I didn't even apply to the majority of the PA gigs on CL because also being a student, my schedule is very limited.- I've been incredibly picky location wise as well. I owe a lot to Craigslist. None of the projects I worked on were "seedy" and I've met a ton of awesome people. It is not "pointless." Other than CL i suggest you look at the filming calender of other cities and track down the productions in your area, then research them on google and apply as a PA to the ones with the smallest budgets or student films. -Crazy though it may seem, it has worked. Usually I can get the contact info pretty easily by looking to see if they posted for any other positions on job search websites like CL or Mandy. *Note* Don't try to sound like a stalker when you tell them how you found their email/#.
  10. "Plus I think modern sets are bloated and actors are losers for the most part. I wanna beat ,really beat, alot of them into the ground." I'm sure A listers are gunna be begging to get on to your project. And about you not being able to find much work off Craigslist : I'm a teenager...let me say that again...teenager- fresh out of high school. started with no resume at all since I didn't have any experience to list. -Yet, from the Los Angeles crew gigs section I've managed to complete 2 successful internships. 11. Yes, I know there are quite a few of these 'how do you become a...' but I've never seen anything specially directed towards motion control/ crane operating. I don't even know what department it would be part of since I've seen most postings about jib etc in the gripping forum but then again they do control the camera - sort of. So, it seems one should know a lot about cameras, but thats what the camera op does. or should I first go more into grip work...? to be even more specific I'd like to study motion control which can lead to FX so ...should that be yet another dept. to study? and should I start with just a jib company then work up to bigger cranes and motion control... What union do most mc operators/ jib guys/girls belong to? I suppose since most work for a company they can get in slightly faster? this the one specific occupation I've found very very little info about getting into. any advice would be much appreciated - I do plan on eventually interning for a dolly/grip/crane company. (apart from the PA work I've been doing) Lastly, as a woman, im slightly worried about not being hired when im 50 it doesn't seem as strenuous labor wise as being a grip. i figure i could always rent out equipment when im older hmm.. easier said then done. anyone know of any female mc operators? Sorry way too long...
