  1. come to think if it i guess youre right about the cloesups. again, sound and editing wasnt my fault though. sushi was my first 16mm production and a collaboration with 8 other people. if i had to shoot it again i would do a lot of things differently.
  2. assuming that with more Depth of Field you mean: More Background gets in focus it is as followed: small aperture: f1.3, f 2...... less depth of field (less background is in focus) big aperture: f8,f11,f16.....more depth of field (more background is in focus) depth of field depends on a few other things as well, such as the lens focal length and the shooting format (video has lots of dof, the bigger the negative the less dof you can get or the more you can play with it ) for example. with a lens as wide as 12mm you get even on a small aperture a lot of depth of field. also simply spoken, the more light you got and the higher your aperture (depending on exposure requirements) you also get more depth of field, maybe george lucas meant that. so: less light - smaller aperture - less depth of field more light - higher aperture - more depth of field
  3. hehe exactly, mannheim is just 10 minutes away from heidelberg, daimler invented the car there, but no one knows the city anyway :)
  4. i would have liked to see Sean Bean as james bond, but im looking forward to see daniel craig too, at least you have to give the man a chance. but then, james bond without Q and without M will be very different anyway:/
  5. sure why not ? check out ryanair, youre form england right ? they have supercheap flight to all over europe. WHAT YOU NEVER HEARD OF HEIDELBERG ? One of the most beuatiful cities in europe and one of the oldest university cities in the world ? im shocked :) your idea sounds good, send me an email :)
  6. depends yes, i lived in australia the last 4 years but at the moment i am in germany (to answer your question freya). im fairly flexible workwise anyway, i dont mind traveling a lot for jobs. i only have some scenes form deadly suhsi on my reel, and they are completely without sound, i would put the whole film on my reel, exactly because of the bad sound :/
  7. hi, well so far i got all my company adresses from mandy.com :/ well if you find some work let me know *g :) like i said, my quota so far: 98 applications and two answers :(
  8. thanks for the help, my producer was thinking about redoing the whole sound, but now hes busy with a more recent production that won several awards, so he kind of lost interest in this movie i guess :/ if i knew enough about sound editing i would do the recording myself and get two german actors in as well, to do two different language versions.
  9. hi freya, thanks for the comment, unfortunately the sound isnt just bad in the little quicktime file but in the original as well :( our recordist really screwed up badly. thats why we havent sent the film of to many festivals, which i think is a shame.
  10. interesting point of view and interpretation :) however, i did neither the editing nor the concept development. those were intended to be cinema commercials, the different versions were just options for the customer, in the end the 29 second version got screened.
  11. ive seen it and i thought it was pretty funny, its a very strange n weird movie but nevertheless the fighting scenes were very well choreographed.
  12. frank: thanks for the tip, yeah the lighting was a bit unfortunate for the girls :/ tsm: thanks for the comment :)
  13. hey phil, i dont mean this as a contest or something, i really wanna know what people think of my work and what i can improve. i sent out 98 applications in the last three weeks (bloody 600€ postage costs) and havent gotten many replies so far, apart from a company in london and one in shanghai, quite depressing :/
  14. Hi, are there by any chance steadycam operators from south germany ? i need one in around 3 weeks time for a 16mm music video :)
  15. 134 views and only one answer ? :( c'mon guys im really looking for constructive criticism :) theres also a reel on www.hereticarts.com
  16. eeeexcellent, this one is right in my city hehe. thanks.
  17. hi tim, that sounds very interesting, i just have to find a lighting rental place in germany that has such lights.
  18. hi, thanks for the tip, yeah i was thinking of a follow spot too, but it might be that the beam itself is a bit too small in diameter, but ill give it a try. color temp is not so much of an issue since the pics will be black and white.
  19. Hi, for an upcoming photo shoot i am looking for a light that gives me a very narrow and focused beam. the picture will be of a ballett dancer on a stage and the beam of light should come from the left. the light would have to be around 10-12 meters away and will be the only light source (hopefully) in an otherwise completely dark theater. any suggestions on what to use ?
  20. thank you guys, the ASC manual couldnt have explained it better :)
  21. i agree what you say about ones work, but i think it could be a good opportunityto present yourself in a different market ? for example european dops that want to work in america or something. after all the ac is read everywhere :)
  22. Hi, when i read through the latest AC issue today i was wondering, how come no DOP's "advertise" themselve in the classified section at the back ? Like :" John Doe, DOP for music videos and commercials, specialized in 35mm and HD, see homepage for showreel, taking on assignments NOW !" Or camera assistants, or focus pullers..... does the AC magazine ban such ads ?
  23. i have no clue about US schools but....the best education usually doesnt depend so much on the teacher but on the student, if you truly want to learn about cinematography the school is only one of many helpful ways. read books about cinematography, talk to people here in the forum and most of all....the best theorie alone doesnt help anyone. if you get the chance to work on a production then do it, or even better, go out and shoot the sh.... out of everythign you can :) good luck with your application.
