  1. Honestly its just for personal experience. Would it be cheaper to rent cameras if I just want to learn how to use them? If a DSLR is the only thing I own it might also limit the type of client i get. As of now I've just been doing freelance, and mostly music videos
  2. Now that I'm no longer a student film maker i felt like it would be a good time to make the transition from shooting on a DSLR to an actual video camera, I'm looking to hopefully spend under $6k. Ive been looking at the Sony FS100, the Black Magic Cinema Camera, and possibly the Canon c100. Could anyone recommend a good entry level video camera for under $6k?
  3. The decision was made to shoot it all at night. What I immediately envisioned after reading the directors notes was having the lights above the counter illuminating the interior of the restaurant. Id want the Lekos to make it look like it has a larger pool of light. Like i said, Im just worried about the size of the restaurant
  4. ok so here's a problem I'm having The singer notices an attractive girl coming into the restaurant. As the singer tries to impress the girl I want the lighting to change to a spot light to focus on the two of them, almost as if they were dancing on a stage. The problem is the space is so small I don't know if I would be able to pull this off. I was thinking of using Leko lights to emulate stage lighting, but would they be too much in such a small space?
  5. totally understand. It will probably be a lot easier on my part once the story is planned out
  6. now here's a question, how do u simulate the over head fluorescents without using them?
  7. The other option would be shooting it all at night. It would give us a lot more time, from 11pm on. We would have more time to set up and break down. Then the direction of the video would have to change, but not that drastically.
  8. I have a feeling this shoot is going to be hectic either way. Its a small crew, a small budget, and not much time.
  9. Im also worried about having enough time. Even if we shoot over a period of several days, its still not enough time to set up, break down, and get enough takes. This is also why I would like to keep the lighting simple so it doesn't take a whole lot of time to set up.
  10. last night was the first night we had been to the location so he told me what he didn't want. The club will be a second location which is still being locked down.
  11. We are shooting on DSLRs, and only a portion is being shot on this location. Im sure I'll have a better idea of how long we'll need once it's storyboarded. The owner seemed pretty willing to give us as much time as we needed as long as it wasn't during business hours.
  12. I have an upcoming project that i am DP on that half of it is set in this very small restaurant. The first part of the music video is going to be set during the day and having the performer working at the restaurant. The idea is he is working a job he hates and has to take crap from the boss to pay the bills. The video then transitions to night and he preforms at a club. We have not done any blocking or storyboarding yet but i am just trying to get an idea in advance of what to do. The director has told me he does not want to use Kino Flos. He also does not want to use the florescent ceiling lights. So beyond using ND. Filters on the windows, I'm not really sure what to do. From our pre-production meeting it seems like he wants to keep it as natural as possible. The owner has said we will be able to shoot between 8am and 11am. My biggest concern is that the performer is African American and that might become problematic with just natural lighting. Any advice on where to go from here?
  13. What would be a better buy in the long run between these three? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/541089-REG/Arri_571959W_Compact_Fresnel_Three_Light_Kit.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/504311-REG/Kino_Flo_KIT_D42_120_Diva_Lite_400_Two_Fluorescent.html http://www.lowel.com/kits/DVcreator1.html
  14. I recently had to shoot some additional coverage for a scene that was shot on an overcast day. Unfortunately it was pretty sunny out. Should I try to color correct the footage to match or would it be wasting my time and I would be better off shooting the whole thing over?
  15. I agree with the EX1. The Canon GL2 was really popular with student film makers then
  16. I honestly still don't understand Tree of Life but it was the most beautiful film of 2011. I liked Hugo but I didn't see it in 3D
  17. couldn't you white balance for Flourescent and use Kino Flos as additional lighting? Just an idea
  18. If anyone is curious this is the final look I came up with
  19. Now that I look at it I might try a 1/2 CTB and only one 650, I think its too blue right now.
  20. Here are some tests i did using two 650s with full CTB shining through the windows, with my dad as a stand in. Any thoughts?
  21. I plan on renting some lights from my school during the week. I should invest in some though
  22. Could I get away with a daylight balanced Kino/Diva? If I used a Kino would I gel it to match the practical lights inside?
  23. Mr. Mullen, thankyou so much for your help About the 575 HMIs that you mentioned, its this, correct? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/102982-REG/Arri_512365_Arrisun_12_Plus_HMI.html
  24. haha yes, hi charles, good memory. but that was over at the DVinfo forums I believe. The location is actually at my house, I've been using it for my student films. I'm starting to see it might not be the best location to shoot in.
