  1. Sorry to go OT Respect for getting "malt duck" into any discussion on any subject.
  2. How long will your k-100 run @ 48FPS on a wind? I hope you plan on short shots and fast edits. Camera noise isn't an issue since you will shoot this MOS.
  3. Look what showed up on eBay today. Mitchell On eBay Can anybody shed some light on all that is there?? I am not the seller and don't know the seller.
  4. Sounds like a "Mitchell Chronograph" that is a cross between a GC and a SS. Does it have a second indicator dial sticking out near the film plane or just a plugged hole? The government used these quite a bit with very long lenses and in conjunction with thedolites for missile and rocket tests. If you look at the cameras from the old Nasa launches there are always a number of them. They are even shown in "Close Encounters".
  5. Hi Stephan, I know my Standard is not nearly the oldest , but it is completely un-modified. All the masks, horizontal left and right, vertical top and bottom and the iris and iris position controls are all functioning and intact. It even has the binocular, keyhole and round and oval masks in the wheel. How many cameras do you think Fries modified? I would be interested in gathering as much information on Mitchell cameras. I'll take North America if you handle Europe. I wonder how many are still out there working, and in what capacities. Marc Sorry for hijacking the thread. Paul please let us know when you get the camera.
  6. I thought they were white to keep them cooler outdoors. It is too bad that Mitchell information hasn't been collected and published to any extent. Mitchell cameras touch a large part of entertainment and technology in the 20th Century....and into the 21st. I have a 1929 Standard and a BNC that was mirror reflexed and shot the TV series "I SPY". How about it Stephan?
  7. To the best of my knowledge the Mitchell GC was produced 1n 1943. The Navy used Mitchell NCs. The AEC used Standards, High speeds, GC & GCN and SS 35mm Cameras from Mitchell. They also used Auricons, Eyemos, Filmos, Maurers and Milliken's as well as any other camera they could get their hands on. After the war Arri IIs were used as well. The GC is a beefier Standard that doesn't have the behind the film plane masks and aperture. I think most, if not all have adjustable shutters. The rod attachment is also different. The GC also has two more rollers and a buckle trip. The motor door is also different. If I'm incorrect let me know. Everything under the plane is a camera used for Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll in the summer of 1946.
  8. "Please, tell me what Livermore Labs and EG&G are about." EG&G History Lawrence Livermore Labs was the only entity that detonated the weapons at the Nevada Test Site. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
  9. Hi Paul, You are braver than me!! Let me know how it turns out. I contacted the seller on Ebay asking for pictures of the front and interior of the camera. He said the camera was in a warehouse but I never got a pics. The AEC/DOE didn't use NC cameras at Los Alamos or the Nevada Test Site to the best of my knowledge. Sorry if you are hoping for GLOW. I have seen a pile of GC cameras and High speed 16mm Mitchells with Livermore Labs and EG&G stickers over the years. There is a good documentary on DVD about the guys that filmed the tests. Visit Hollywood's Top Secret Film Studio (2003)
  10. The late night shows will start a lot of discord in television. I have friends that do reality shows that are all going back to work after the first of the year instead of March when their shooting schedule usually begins. I understand Feature work is not as seasonal to the extent that television is, but new releases are always good moneymakers at spring break and when school is out. Cheers, Marc
  11. Wouldn't it make sense for the HDTVs to do the same thing? I have pulled it off at 48hz playing with an external processor and a crt projector a couple of years ago.
  12. I suppose that depends on the content, and origination format. To the best of my knowledge, don't most modern theater film projectors show each frame more than once? Digital projection and HD cameras and post flow will change what we expect to see on the screen. Personally I want to see what the film maker intended. I still have a SD projector to watch satellite and SD-DVDs. I have over 2000 SD-DVDs and half of them are old films that are 4:3 aspect ratio.
  13. Most of the 120hz HDTVs are line doubling. 24p is a great feature if your player AND display support it. The cable and satellite companies should be flogged for selling and delivering a compressed signal and calling it HD. Let's see what the CES show brings next month. How many people on the board even have HD displays in their homes? I have a HD projector and a HD-DVD player. "Blade Runner" and the Kubrick films made it all a worthwhile purchase for me. Cheers, Marc Happy Holidays to all!!
  14. You Photography was beautiful. Helen was not so nice looking, she had the scary dying Cougar thing going on. I could have done without seeing as much of Cuba Gooding Jr. as well. I agree that there are many older women that look amazing, but that wasn't the case here for me with Helen Mirren. I'm sure she was a pleasure to work with. Did you operate those scenes? Cheers, Marc
  15. Helen Mirren as Rose in "Shadowboxer". Sorry you had to be on the set for that David Mullen. I hope you weren't operating for the love scenes. She may be a great actress, but I could have lived my whole life seeing without her in that part.
  16. I know quite a few people that moved to reality television work in 1989. Some are still doing the same show they started on, some created other reality shows.. One moved on to "The Amazing Race" and picked up five Emmy awards.
  17. 87 Octane is the lowest I have seen posted on the pump here. Without a way to test you pretty much have to take their word for it. I only use 91 Octane in my modern cars and truck because that is what the manufacturer specs. The ' 33 Ford Hot Rod with the flat head and twin carbs only gets the 100 octane racing fuel.
  18. Hello Dave, In the United States, octane is an average of 2 ratings, research octane (RON) and motor octane (MON). If you look at any gas pump in the United States, you will see a yellow sticker that says "octane by R + M / 2" That is the basic formula for an average. These 2 numbers mean different things. Research Octane number is always higher than Motor Octane number. In Europe, they only report the RON. A lot of people think that in Europe, the octane is higher. Well, that is not exactly true. You see, in Europe, you might find 96 octane at a local gas station. when the highest sold here is 91 in Las Vegas. Well, that 96 is equivalent to 92 here in the States. To make it worse most states require 10% of the gas to be ethanol. (Oxygenated Fuel) All I know is I need to buy 100 octane racing fuel so my 1962 Triumph TR6SS bike won't knock going up hills or have a gummed up caburator if it sits more than a few days. Cheers, Marc
  19. We haven't been able to even get a VW Diesel for the last two model years in the US. VW is promising mid year 2008. I waiting for the Tata Indica from India to get here. They are priced less than the cost of repair when some drunk backed into the rear of my parked Porsche two weeks ago. We are just starting to get the Smart FourTwo here. Good TDI cars from Europe that have any performance, and good fuel economy are a pipe dream in the US. Diesel fuel is priced higher than premium gasoline in Las Vegas.
  20. Wal-Mart doesn't sell steady-cam operators.
  21. Sorry if I inferred you were "green'. I was talking about the industry in general. The Toureg is the thinking man's Porsche Cayenne. Built in Germany too. For me, living in Las Vegas for 20 years is the ultimate "ungreen" statement that can be made. Cheers, Marc
  22. Greetings Richard. What is the country of origin of your VW? It is pretty hypocritical for filmmakers to act "green" by driving econo boxes and hybrids with the amount of power we use. Nothing like a GIANT "carbon footprint" that you can be proud of to prove you know where you stand. Does Canada have a genius counterpart to Al Gore? Did the Canadian P. M. understand the Castro letter? Bush came up with this answer: Tue Dec 18, 2:25 PM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Tuesday a letter from Cuban leader Fidel Castro suggesting he might give up his formal leadership post was interesting, but that it was difficult to determine what it actually meant. Cheers, Marc
