  1. Kodak's online film calculator: http://motion.kodak.com/motion/Templates/OpenFlash.aspx?path=/motion/uploadedFiles/US_plugins_flash_en_motion_filmCalculator.swf&pageTitle=http://www.kodak.com - Film Calculator&flashWidth=600&flashHeight=400&flashBgColour=FFFFFF&WindowBgColour=FFFFFF
  2. Double checking my copy of New Cinematographers, there IS NO section on Birth. There are articles on The Game, The Yards, Gerry, and Elephant. Someone with close ties to American Cinematographer magazine should get them to do one of their special, retrospective articles on Birth, since there is so much interest. There was a recent article on the cinematography of the 1977 cult horror film Suspiria recently, which is one of my favorites.
  3. Double checking my copy of New Cinematographers, there IS NO section on Birth. There are articles on The Game, The Yards, Gerry, and Elephant. Here is the old, revived thread under Cinematographers: http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=3203 Steve
  4. The book, "New Cinematographers" has a chapter on Savides and there is a section on Birth. His basic style is lowering the contrast and color saturation without filters through underexposure and pull processing, or sometimes flashing. The pages about Birth are not available in the Google preview. The Amazon "look inside" preview shows more pages. It's a nice book where all the cinematographers are "breaking the rules" and usually going for a gritty or unique look, and not a slick Hollywood look. It's worth checking out. http://books.google.com/books?id=10kR9a9SYnMC&dq=new+cinematographers&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=Lpc4TJGNDYH88AaT4-ymBg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CDkQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=birth&f=false http://www.amazon.com/New-Cinematographers-Alex-Ballinger/dp/1856693341/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1278778183&sr=1-1
  5. If you click on the link below, then "View list of theaters with 4K projectors", you can see current and coming 4K Sony projectors. The picture quality should be better than Imax Digital, I guess? http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/mkt-digitalci...04k%20projector
  6. I got this gear from Rafcamera. It was sent very quickly. http://rafcamera.com/geared-ring-for-konva...nses-p-118.html I don't like how with these gears on the lens, the lens cap won't fit. I wish I knew what the filter size was on this lens. I'd screw in a filter to protect the front element, instead of having to remove the gear when not using the lens.
  7. Be sure to shoot a test before commiting to shooting lots of reversal film. It can look extremely harsh if you don't shoot it right. I saw a test a friend did with 7285 100D, on an average sunny day, and the shadows were jet black. There was no detail at all on the dark sides of their face, or the shadows. You need HMI fill to bring up the shadows to 1-2 stops below the key light make it look more normal. Or you need to angle yourself and the subject to the sun/lighting so they are completely lit by the sun, or all in the shade. Unless that is the look you are going for. If designed well it can look nice too, like in Man on Fire The book "New Cinematographers" has a section on Buffalo '66 which was shot on an old kind of VNF reversal film. It was made without a digital intermediate, so the prints were very contrasty with burned-in bright areas. You either need very controlled lighting and spot on exposure or digital intermediate, like Man on Fire or Domino, to get all the high contrast detail on the camera original on the screen. I think you can read most of the Buffalo '66 section here: http://www.amazon.com/New-Cinematographers...ader_1856693341 I've seen Buffalo '66 twice on TV, once was on an old dvd and it was completely washed out looking. Just like the captures here: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/Misc/buffalo_66.htm#b66 The second time was on a High Def channel and the colors and detail were so much richer, they must have scanned the camera original for that transfer. I don't know if that transfer has been released on video. I just got a 200ft short end of 5285 myself, and will be shooting a test soon with my anamorphic lomos. I called Dwayne's photo, and they said they will E-6 develop short rolls, and prep for telecine. Steve
  8. Dwayne's Photo should be able to process Kodachrome movie film until December 2010. http://www.dwaynesphoto.com/ Just use quality lenses for your shoot. I shot some S16mm Kodachrome 40 with an ARRI SR3 and a Canon Super 16mm lens, and the colors popped off the screen. Then I shot a roll on my Bolex and some old lenses and it was soft and washed out looking in comparison.
  9. Does Foma make 35mm neg. film still? About 3 years ago I asked their US distributor if Foma would make me two 400ft rolls of their Classic 100 and 200 on cores for shooting in movie cameras. He got in touch with the manufacturers in the Czech Republic and they said yes. I never did actually order the film though. http://www.freestylephoto.biz/sc_search.php?rfnc=402 http://www.freestylephoto.biz/c_contact.php My contact was Eric Joseph, V.P. 10. Personally I do not reccommend "Upres 1080p" transfers like what you mentioned. They are only enlarging the SD image. The one I just had done came back looking VERY noisy and not presentable. Better to do either a high quality SD transfer or a real HD transfer. Send me a private email if you want. Steve
  11. Bernie is very fair, He serviced my Konvas and anamorphic lenses. http://www.super16inc.com/index.html
  12. I'm close to completing my basic filter set. I need a plain polarizer and a .3 or .6 ND filter, size: 138mm drop-in. Anybody have a used one in good condition at a fair price? Minor damage like an edge scratch is OK. If you have any other interesting filters like a chocolate, classic soft or net filter at a fair price, let me know too for future use, but I want to get the Pola and ND soon. Thanks in advance, Steve Zimmerman Charleston SC USA
  13. Interesting interview here with the director of the upcoming movies "Legion" and "Priest". He mentions the reason he could not shoot both in anamorphic is Michael Bay's fault! :o http://www.aintitcool.com/node/43720
  14. I called and emailed Dale Labs recently and they said they stopped processing ECN :( . I hope there is still someplace that can do this service Steve Zimmerman > Date: Wednesday, September 23, 2009, 12:59 PM > We stopped processing the "process > ECN" films. We still process regular > film. Thanks for your inquiry. > -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  15. Nice detailed series of articles here. I thought some of you might find this interesting. They go over the projection and show a few of the types of cameras they have. http://gizmodo.com/tag/gizmodo-goes-to-imax/
  16. Bump.... :) Last Day of the listing, pLease check it out. Thanks, Steve
  17. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=170334116391 I'm raiding the freezer again, sellling two pristine 100ft daylight spools of out of production, 16mm reversal film. I bought them, from Dwaynes Photo in Feburary 2006, soon after they stopped manufacture at Kodak. Expiration dates, May, 2007. Please check it out. Thanks, Steve Zimmerman
  18. I guess technically an adapter to use PL mount lenses could be made for this camera, because there is no mirror, and the flange depth is so short. I searched but could not find anything. It would be great to have a relay lens for this too, just like the ones for 2/3" video cameras.
  19. This is where the Technical Specs listing for each film on imdb.com comes in handy: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0829482/technical
  20. I sent two 100ft 16mm rolls of Kodachrome to Dwaynes a couple years ago, and they looked perfect when I projected them. The footage shot tungsten with Ziess lenses on an SR3 looked gorgeous. The roll shot on my old bolex with an old switar lens, and an 80A behind the lens gel (shot in daylight), looked desaturated, but no damage either.
  21. WOW! the threat suddenly explodes with replies, and informative ones. Thanks guys! I'm sure this be helpful to others too. Just to wrap this up with me, Bernie said to use ARRI III grease. I will remove the gun grease and add the ARRI grease when I get it. Thanks, Steve Zimmerman
  22. I have relisted the film at a much lower price. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...s=tab%3DSelling Thanks, Steve
  23. Thanks for the nice and honest reply. B) I called Bernie and he said I did the right thing. He feels just about any high quality grease is fine. I'll probably send my mags off to him to be completely overhauled in a few months anyway. Thanks again, Steve
