  1. ah, yes Stuart Brereton: as on google "...is a style of painting using very pronounced chiaroscuro" thanks.
  2. Because im learning about both. The beginning of understanding the two terms doesnt seem the place for having a position, if thats what u meant. I heard Coppola referring in an interview to scenes in the Godfather as Chiaroscuro. Then in Caravaggio lighting which seemed to have pure black with no detail as tenebroso, so i was wondering what experienced cinematographers might say. If i'm missing some etiquette forgive me. I know people mostly talk about specific technical situations here.
  3. Robyn- just curious...what situation found you filming Björk at a sushi bar? I love her music so it caught my eye.
  4. Is tenebrism just the extreme of Chiaroscuro, the falling off quickly to black?
  5. The dialogue scene takes place in a Greenwich village apt two girls on a couch. I want it to turn out that the areas of shadows in the background will in a few places be true black, but there will be also lighter dark areas where we could place some item. When im lighting the set (on location) would it be incorrect to say that i need to illuminate the background area to what looks brighter to the naked on-location eye, in order to record the image that IN POST i will then bring down the blacks to true black and rely on establishing ratios onset...that will then end up better quality? Is it correct to say that if not illuminated enough the camera will not have any image information? Tryin to plan some details in parts of the shadows properly
  6. p. 20 " I connect with how he [Gordon Willis ASC] did things simply and well, in terms of distilled coverage..." What's distilled coverage?
  7. Quoted: "(you'd want to shoot a grey scale for dailies using the full correction so that it looked neutral in daylight and the scene that followed with the partial correction looked cooler in comparison to the grey scale" What is meant by "shooting a grey scale" ? I currently understand grey scale to be the brightness, from black to white.
  8. Opinions regarding going to film school? If the goal is to get a job on film sets and try making it into a career, possibly getting to operate or DP one day, might it be necessary to have the degree? I went to music school in my 20s so I also acknowledge the incredible value on having a program, especially having coaches and peers and venues to perform in, all in order to hone your skills and awaken potential.
  9. thanks all, eye openers. It was an artistic choice to soften it up in the old days puts it all in a new light maybe i'll look at optics, math needs work though. thanks for the responses all
  10. Is resolution the same as definition? If I say i want it low-resolution is it the same as saying low-definition? We're making a funny little short in the style of early cinema. HD of course looks out of place. Can i set the thing to a lower number definition/resolution in FCPX? Is this gonna work or will the video simply look pixelated? thanks! this is wacky fun this project.
  11. Lol, thanks! This is our weed prop, shining back into the Guy's face.
  12. Haha someone made the suggestion that's all...nobody would use anything other than coffee on anything I'm doing. Don't get the wrong idea. Admittedly it was the kinda question I probably didn't even hafta ask had I thought a bit more... Now I'm embarrassed, OK. Not the first dumb question ever been put to me or been put to someone else by me
  13. There haven't been any accidents BTW, intake a kitta time to tape everything down, and I retape it as lights are moved.... I'm learning about electrical issues (AWG ratings etc) and I'm not using large lamps...yet
  14. It's a good project fir learning craft but I'd like to avoid getting into trouble. I'm a beginner and I'm seeing a lot of these types of issues, especially in everyday safety on set. Is there a good resource on general safety on set inline or a manual with checklists maybe? I need to give the whole safety subject sit down and study time
  15. Right exactly... in the US I don't think it matters even if it be legally gotten, since the only legal use would be for the person using it medicinally... and we are neither lawyers nor a production with a budget over 20 bucks so it's green yellow LED s !
  16. Thanx for the confirmation. It will be from a relative who got it legally for medicinal use but I was just gonna use a green and yellow light in his face as he looks into the bag then he smiles. Actually seeing it isn't important. Better to avoid showing anything
  17. Hello wizards I'm making a music video for a band, it's silly and funny, about Satan stealing the weed. One scene where the weed in the bag is passed one guy to another in a deal. Is there any reason to be worried legally about using real weed? Should it be oregano? I mean we've all seen Goddfellas with pounds of "cocaine" all over everyone's faces... i just dont want to get anyone in trouble so it's best to consult instead of just supposing. cheers!
  18. Would a spectrograph of a tungsten source be a straight line? The above spectrograph of the CFL looks like mostly green spike, but also blue and red spikes?
  19. (though HMI is hardly a dead flat spectrum) What is meant by this? What're u describing about HMI light qualities? (I'm new to the lingo)
  20. Hey, did they use blue to light outside the window here, even though it would be b&w? Wouldn't different hues make different greys? Did they use color gels? Happy new year all!

  22. Why isn't there a foot candles setting on my Sekonic L478D ? There's lux, then I can convert. Is it just favoring the metric over the English?
