  1. An older Windows system is not going to function well with a 4k timeline. It probably won't be able to play the files in VLC. I haven't gone 4k yet, but when I do, which is probably next year, I am going for a Xeon setup with 64 gigs of ram. It is just that hard on the system. Keep in mind though, there are major differences within 4k. All the way from 50mbps to 400+. The more information, the better computer you will need.
  2. I have actually figured out this the hard way. So our next investment is a generator, so we can have enough power on set. Another huge factor is not having to choose location based on availability of power.
  3. You are probably right! This one got some talk over here when it was released. Quite clever.
  4. What is the best car for driving? It really really depends.
  5. Now that one is powerful. I guess this one speaks to everyone with a sibling.
  6. I think this really depends on what result you are trying to achieve. Can someone learn to make short films like Philip Bloom? Yes, because it is more or less a one-man show. Can one person make a blockbuster?`No. This requires a gathering of people highly skilled in their field. But it is very much possible to make something look expensive with a decent camera, good use of light, sound and actors. It also helps a lot with a good grade. As people have stated already, it all comes down to practise. I find myself growing so fast these days that I constantly remove stuff I recently made from my portfolio. That's how I know I am moving in the right direction.
  7. That's a good point. Once the connection is established, one has to try to reach people at different stages in life. A mothers love for her child, the son who hasn't visited his parents in way too long, the feeling of lost love, nostalgia, hunger, romance. Do you think there are aspects we have to be careful of here? How far can we go before it is too much? As long as a commercial has awaken an emotion in you. Be it disgust, or any good feeling, it has done it's job.
  8. Thank you for listing several great commercials. And I do agree with you, the more time you have, the more time you will have to make the viewer connect with the story. You also risk losing the viewer though. Here is a beautiful one:
  9. So, in your opinion, what makes a great commercial? I have seen some very good commercials. To me though, most of them are repetitive noise, with very little thought behind them but to be so massively quantified into your subconconcious. For me, as a filmmaker, I am always looking to create something that people connect to on an emotional level. Even if they just watched it for 40 seconds. Now, we connect to characters that we can relate to. An emotion in their expression. Their eyes. Body language. Can we effectively capture this in under a minute? I think we can, but we have to be able to take a chance that people will watch the picture even though it is repetitive for 15 seconds. Which might be a stretch, since people have the attention span of a gold fish in todays society. We are attacked with ads everywhere. Another approach could be to create something so beautiful, the viewer is caught by that. I do believe it is hard to keep attention with cinematography alone though, except for those especially interested in such. What are your thoughts, and what is your favourite commercial? I think this could be an interesting discussion.
  10. The more needy you seem, the harder the sale will be. Obviously, a great reel, and previous work with reputable clients, will also make it easier for a potential client to give you the project. Value yourself correctly. If you are just starting out, you most likely will not pull off charging the same as a company that has been in business for several years.
  11. Alright, thanks. Yeah. Makes sense :)
  12. Hey. I am looking into some advice on hazing, both indoors and outdoors. So, I have a restaurant shoot tomorrow, and I really know the opening scene would look much better with haze, but the restaurant opens 2 hours after we are done shooting. Does anyone have experiences with this? I am rigging a 5k Dino through diffusion, and a smaller LED panel. Now, not really related. How does one go about creating a hazed environment outside, where there might be wind?
  13. What is the result of blowing it angled into the lens?
  14. Doesn't make much sense to have a $17000 lens for personal or small projects. One can always rent them if needed(if rentals are available where you live). Maybe some middle ground? High-end stills glass or older cine glass.
  15. I usually export 1080 or 720 mp4 for instagram. No problems there. How does the problem occur?
  16. You do have a solid point, although the ursa mini have been having some issues with faults and bad customer service, as far as I've read, at least. And you definitely do need deep pockets to start a manufacturing company like this.
  17. Looks quite interesting on paper. http://www.craftcamera.com/ Like the fact that its modular. Global shutter, high-framerate and neat formfactor. Also very good pricepoint. Concerns are of course stability and build quality as well as DR and how it actually works in practice. Thoughts?
  18. It doesn't really matter what you do. Your email will be sent straight to the spam folder, if not just ignored. Businesses get emails like this all day. There are proven steps that work when selling your work. 1. Give value 2. Rapport 3. Sell and Close. Now, the value part of the equation might be someone you have already been working with recommending you, or, it could be marketing stunts. Anyhow, for me personally, the most successful way of getting new business, is actually just going to the business and asking for the manager. Flatter them, tell them how you like their concept, and tell them what you do. THEN, you send the email with portfolio, and make follow-up calls. Keep in mind, you will probably get quite a bit of no's, before the business comes alone. But we are not in this game for it being easy, right?
  19. Might be easiest to do it in post. Greenscreen the window, and do it in After Effects.
  20. Angenieux 12-120 2.2. The vignetting is worst at 12-50mm on close focus.
  21. Just saw this, and I thought it was phenomenal. Great concept, good progression and fine camerawork. Ending could have been executed better, but the tension was great throughout the movie. A very good horror, as it kept me on my toes for a long time.
  22. It's a so-called Paris Zoom, like the 12-120 i just bought. Build quality is superb, and the gears are fluid and smooth, with decent resistance. Image wise, I can't really say yet, as I have only shot a few minutes with mine, but from looking at it in Resolve, it looks very very promising. There are no signs of chromatic aberation or distortion. Faces are very sharp and clean. Keep in mind, I believe they are both made for 16mm film sensors.
  23. Received the lens and adapter now. The image it produces is very nice, but it does vignette a lot under 50mm. No problem to crop in on the image, but I am thinking it would be wise to get a 10 or 12mm prime lens when I want to go really wide. I like the fact that it is quite compact as well.
