  1. Isn't that sad, no one wants to participate here unless it involves camera fondling. Jeeesus. They work fine as is. You just need a little lock on the spindles for 16mm rewinds. I used a snip of clear plastic tubing. I would push it on the spindle that sticks out of the reel. Obviously, you leave the spindle straight and it can't be bent. Get a tight fit. I guess you could also use a mini hose clamp on the spindle as well. If using tubing, stop to check the fit is tight every so often. Good luck! Careful where you put your fingers. Not good to use the guillotine cutter and watch TV! Luckily only lost some nail and not the tip of the finger.
  2. I'm testing how long SDD drives hold data without being plugged in. First part of the test is complete. 11 months for a Samsung T7 was OK. Next test is due early 2024. I have enough Samsung drives to go out for a few years of tests. I had heard they lose data if not plugged in periodically. The 'how often' part is up in the air. I've tested SD cards and they hold data pretty good. Also testing thumb drives, going out to 14 years...if I live that long. Here are some SD card tests. SD Card Report…how archival are they? – Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection – II (home.blog) Will update thread as SDD drives are tested.
  3. Theaters used serials to keep people coming back to find out what happened after the cliffhanger. <><><><> 1986 ad BoxOffice magazine. DDTJRAC Advertising Archive
  4. I have a small collection of 'Box Office.' It is a trade magazine for theaters and projection.
  5. Tyler... Why did covid stop your bikes? Kemalettin... People have different priorities. Some will overlook what are negatives because of things that are more important to them. Tyler is a good example of that. He expressed what is important to him in So. Cal. It is the same with politics. It all revolves around priorities. The reps say how can any sane person vote dem. The dem's say how can anyone vote for...you know who. It is all about what is more important to you over something else. There was a guy that was depressed about living in Santa Barbara. He lived in a little apartment. He had an average job that allowed him to have a small apartment. This was 15 years ago. Maybe with today's rental costs he can't afford Santa Barbara now, dunno. But the point is this... For an average person living in Santa Barbara, you won't find you joy in living in big mansions like Greg has. You will find your joy in 'just' being able to live in Santa Barabra. I was born in L.A., but it got to $$ for me to live. I moved out decades ago and would just visit periodically to get my L.A. fix. But haven't been back since 2015. I moved as close as I could get to NYC and still afford it and that put me about 6 hours away in the Rustbelt. L.A., NYC both exciting cities and unaffordable for me...even for visiting any more.
  6. Thanks for the replies! Frank, are you going to scan your material and put it online once you retire? I found this online. https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?arnumber=7241548 Looks like the still labs were better organized with trade publications. I would have thought well-funded Hollywood would have done better. 'My comments are not associated with any institution as of 5/28/23.' Did you quit the LOC Frank?
  7. Been finishing up prepping books / mags / paper for a scanning session. Spent the last 2 weeks prepping them...cutting off bindings, labeling them, microwaving mold issues and more. Within this hoard of about 10 linear feet of paper to be scanned, I have about 13 inches of 'Photo Lab Management' magazine. It was a trade mag for the photo lab industry before things went digital and a little beyond. Super, super rare. You can't even find out anything about it online. I acquired them as a donation. I had solicited the owners to sell them to me. And to my surprise they donated them to my Archive. I only had to pay for shipping, which was about $50. But it was not as cut and dried as that. Took quit a few months to complete the transaction. Anyway... Back in the day, did they make similar trade mags for cine' labs?
  8. Thanks Frank. That's pretty stressful only having a few days to work. What is the quality comparison between making a contact print versus scanning and making a film print from the scan?
  9. Nice report Dan! Does Lasergraphics force the annual support contract on the buyers? Companies are all run differently. You would swear some of them don't want to be biz. I've talked about problems I had over the years with Lasergraphics trying to find out info. And it is not just them. Even local companies can stink nowadays. A neighbor lady was looking for some roll down security doors. She went to a local home and garden show and made some contacts for quotes with door companies. One company out of three got back to her and they never followed up. She stopped waiting for the show contacts and decided to visit a couple of local garage door companies. Waiting for quotes, she never got any. No one ever followed up. Just terrible the service with some of these companies. Retroscan? It is a nice scanner for $6K. I mean if that is all you got, it will give you 'something.' And something is better than nothing, generally speaking. When I bought mine, I sold off an old Harley Sportster, borrowed a couple of thousand from a friend and put the rest on my credit card. If it had a better sensor, it would be much better if all you needed was silent scans. Although you still have some jumpiness. With me it is never an option of working harder, scanning more films and making more $ to buy a better scanner. My Archive is open content, 'The 'Peoples' Archive'...and there is not much $$ in open content work...like none. But working open content gives me the freedom to do almost exactly what I like. I say almost, as sometimes to do a project justice I need to round it out with material that would not be my first choice of working on. But that is usually minimal. Another benefit is I don't have to worry about being cancelled because of prejudice. As long as it is legal...I do as I like. And even then, I push the envelope sometimes. Baby Kinetta? Looked like a great option. But can't get one. The builder is getting on in years and he can't seem to produce. Well, as long as I'm breathing, and the films haven't turned into mush...there is hope! <><><><> https://archive.org/download/gayety-theatre-bouncy-bobbye-mack-burlesk-1965-66-d.-d.-teoli-jr.-a.-c./Gayety Theatre Bouncy Bobbye Mack Burlesk 1965-66 D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C..jpg Selection from Burlesque Theater Archive DDTJRAC
  10. "Soon the world Friedkin represented will be scoured completely clean from society. Only a few remain who know of the subtlety of this past." Spell it out. Here is what the I.A. has on him... Internet Archive: Digital Library of Free & Borrowable Books, Movies, Music & Wayback Machine No photos though. Here are some photos on Google. William Friedkin - Google Search He must have had a great archive. He may have left it to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures or some other institution. Point is we will never see much or any of it. Once institutions get things, it is like the last scene of the warehouse in Raiders of the Lost Ark. I was interviewing some guy a few months ago via email. He must have died mid-interview. I found a film newsreel on Piper Laurie. I noticed the I.A. has no photos of her. I wrote her to see if she would contribute some photos or let me scan some if she didn't want to bother...nothing. People don't think about archiving their work...one day you just don't wake up and all that history is gone! https://archive.org/download/mike-wallace-cbs-press-photo-1992-d.-d.-teoli-jr.-a.-c.-1/Mike Wallace CBS press photo 1992 D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. 12. Terrible. When I corresponded with the company, they said it ships direct from Europe. They didn't even have a sample machine in the USA to look at. I'm not qualified to do any of that work. I need a turnkey scanner that works out of the box. I was going to start a new thread to see if there were any new developments with scanning. Closed down the film Archive more or less last year. If I ever get a scanner, then will think about adding more films once I get through the 2.5 million feet sitting around and if I'm still breathing.
  13. Great for you, bub! I still have the Retroscan. Had an opportunity a year ago or so to get an Archivist or HDS+, but it didn't work out and lost my sponsor. I wrote to the Film Foundation, (Scorsese, Lucas, Coppola, et all) to see if they would finance or loan me an Archivist, but never heard a peep. Before that wrote to many film archives and art philanthropists to see if they would sponsor me...nothing. Well, I got a few lotto tickets for the next $1.55 BB Mega. (I only need $3/4 million or so.) Do a blog on running the Lasergraphics. Don't wait for them. Everyone is on a different wavelength. Good luck and hope it works out for you! <><><><> Selection from NYC 180 by D.D.Teoli Jr.

  15. Hollywood Christmas Parade 1951 D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive Just finished up cutting 40+ clips from some old newsreels. (If you want some editing practice, cut up someone else's old films. I don't need practice, it is just something I have to do.) Enjoyed seeing this clip of the parade. Hollywood was unrecognizable compared to today. Last Christmas parade I went to in Hollywood was in the late 1980's. or early 90's. Gypsy Boots brought up the rear on a bicycle from what I remember. Gypsy Boots was one of the original nature boys, that Nat King Cole sang about in a song of the same title and Kerouac alluded to in On the Road. 16. Atoms For Peace 1953 D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive Film was shot about 7 or 8 years after the USA dropped the 2 nukes on Japan. Shows peace time efforts to find use for nuclear material. Especially fascinating are the early robotics / mechanical arm in the hot cave.
  17. Thanks Frank! Glad there is still someone around that knows this stuff. Power rewinds are extremely hard to get. A picker found it and boom...it goes on eBay. But you can look for years and not find one. I was interviewing someone via email and he seemed to have died between interviews. If you know someone with important history within them...get it documented...email...audio oral history...video...still photography...text. Yes, I will have to learn about the brushes and all that. This is from an era when things were repaired and not trashed. It is built like a tank. Many thanks again for the info Frank. Good luck with your future retirement and keep moving! (As in exercise.) Sitting at the 'puter all day takes it toll.
  18. I don't know which is the best category for this. If not correct, then move it. Can someone help me with the following questions:What is A and B for?Is the body supposed to have this big gap? Is it for ventilation?Anything you can tell me about it? Are there instructions online anywhere? Thanks!

  21. Caught a glimpse of a gasholder in England while watching a film. Before high pressure gas lines these were all over the place. I think they still have a few relics left in England.
