  1. i have been using MDs and DCCs since 1992. I have used both formats in location recording with good results. on the MD front i currently use the MZ-N1. there are several new ones out now that can record up to a GIG of music on MD. you can get that much information on the conventional discs. they have a new HD disk. the top of the line unit is the MZ-H1(which is on my radar). price is US $399.00 i have sen it for much less on amazon and flebay. they also have a model with a 20 gig hard drive in it for a little more. have you ever thought about using a dat recorder ? more syncing options over the MD.
  2. can you mic the talent and run a cord to your cam or a mixer on site? how far a distance are we talking?
  3. this was a good movie. i think foxx and cruise were great in their rolls. i know they shot video in the taxi scenes which seemed noticeable to me. however, i totaly enjoyed michael manns vision and his framing.. took me back to the miami vice days a bit.. anyway, would love to hear some opinons on this movie from you guys....
  4. would love to meet the infamous phil but i wont be in la until june... your welcome to visit ME in atlanta though.. :P
  5. thanks again mitch. i knew there was a reason somewhere....
  6. great info guys. id like to ask a question that may or may not be related to this topic. when viewing movies in the theater, there is the sync blip the pops up at the top right of the screen at 10 and 2 seconds apart. i remember these to be the timing cues for the projectionist back in the day to switch reels (i could be wrong). my question is why is this still needed in the modern theaters where the movie is usually on one huge reel (or two). is this process automated now where an electronic eye sees this visual cue and switches the reels when making these theater prints? i appreciate any education on this. its just curiousity more so than anything.
  7. interesting info guys, i've always wondered how huge these things were... ;)
  8. another vote for "The American Cinematographer" Mag.. a very good resource.
  9. yeah thanks for the links.. i never really thought to look on fleabay for a supe 8... yeah i bet that sears one kicks! all the best...
  10. LOL! yeah Ben looks more like a college jock/frat brother than a superhero, but that didn't detract from the movie.. despite its unexplainable twists... its good as a sci fi movie.. plus theres Uma.. yeah woo and jerry love explosions but thats why i go to their movies... the way they use zooms unconventionally and ramping up the image is what i like to see...
  11. i agree, so much can be learned from reading the great posts on cinematography here. Tim Tyler has done a great job with this forum over the years.
  12. man id love to get my hands on a supe 8 cam... the images from those devices are very cool. you can do so much with them...
  13. paycheck was a great film. John Woo did not disappoint. his signature slow mo scenes and zooms were all in this movie. great story and Uma Thurman was hott! B) the Operating from Chris Lundsgaard (sp?) was great. nice whip pans. Phil you should definitely see this movie!
  14. hey phil, im with you on most of what you said. movies these days are not really interesting. they hype it up and once you see it and it generates a couple mil its off the radar the next week. (i loved the 5th element though!) im going to see paycheck today. this is the first movie i have seen in over 5 months. have not had the time to stop by the movies (plus we moved from DC to atlanta). the trailer looks cool so hopefully i will get my money's worth!
  15. hopefully im going to see paycheck tomorrow. i have not had the time tto go to the movies in over 5 months! been busy but i miss the movie watching. id also like to know the good and bad that are out there....
  16. i enjoyed christmas. i was over my familes house with the wife. i dont get to play cameraman as much as most of you guys so of course i take it seriously when i do. took some great still and motion images (i think). we also watched some music videos i shot a few years back with some local music artists i produced. scary but it was fun!
