  1. Well it will be also on a DVD for them to hand out
  2. Dear All, A company I know are wanting to do an infomercial, which would be displayed on their website. They are willing to spend 10k to 15k on it. Length would be 1.5 to 2 min. It would only show a doctor talking about his product and a 5sec shot of a molecule done in CG. Would this budget be enough to shoot it on highend HD? (Cinealta etc.)? Regards
  3. Dear All, I just saw The New World two days ago. The trailer had really captured my heart because I am in love with history and epics, and the trailer portrayed the whole mood of the movie as if it is a survival story with an epic battle at the end, in the midst of a forbidden love and personal struggle. Therefore, and with that in mind, I went to see it on the big screen, and to be honest, I kept looking at my watch after the first 45min, trying to get a grasp of the story acts: their initiation and enfolding. To be fare, the beauty of that world was well captured, but the story leans more toward a docu-narration, which maybe explains why it did so horribly in the box office. All of the people I know and who have seen it, thought it was VERY boring. I didn't think so, because I let myself get taken by the beauty of nature, and the purity of that world. Anyway, great movie that I'd add to my DVD library. Regards
  4. Speaking from my own experience, a friend of mine, director of course, was adopting the same strategy you're doing. He did a 5 min clip speaking about the movie, kind of an explanatory thing along with showing some aesthetic abilities, but not to be the bearer of bad news, that got him nowhere meeting with producers, and he did meet a whole bunch of them. It looks to me like this is the first thing you'll be shooting on film that you're looking to shoot something beforehand, which "shows" your aesthetic ability? otherwise you can just show them past stuff you've done. I do agree that cutting an informative trailer about a certain project is an interesting thing to have once seeking producers, but I def. don't put high on the priority list with the "must have" stuff. I'd say don't just bank on it too much. best of luck! Oliver S
  5. Dear Mr. R.Edge, This was not the aim of this thread by any mean. I stated things the way they happened with utter objectivity. Now when I need advice on how to run personal things, I know now where to inquire and who to solicit, merely due to the forsaken ability when it comes to managing the grey substance, as the industry, thank God, lacks many maestros as such.
  6. Thats what I told the guys, especially considering the amount of money they spent on this thing.. it just puzzles me that there are ppl. out there with all this money, still lack the basics in this industry!
  7. Thanks all for the thoughts out guys. David, the director who got fired due to lack of artistic skill has been paid way over the top, probably three if not four times more than a normal director could have gotten in this situation, so he's well set down that end. Alessandro, Alessandro! ma cosa stai dicendo? The guy was a mess from what I've seen on the screen, and the way he handeled the project. I was brought in to save the tons of cash these guys have allready put in, 60% of what he shot has to be re-shot anyway.
  8. Eventhough this is a cinematography forum, I have a question if any of you guys could help.. If at some point a director was involved in a project with another party (private/individual) and he gets fired, does the things he worked on and created so far for the project are entitled his? In other words, can the responsible of the project keep using the name of the project that the director came up with, and the shots he shot/directed? keep in mind that from square one when the director came in, there was nothing on paper, all VERBAL agreements, so do we need to get him to sign off? I just got hired to finish directing a feature documentary and wrap up the mess that he had left behind, and we're worried about the rights issue here. Thanks
  9. I'd love to have a discussion with you folks about how epics have evolved from the fifties to our days, both technically and scriptwriting wise. What say you?
  10. Thanks David, thanks Marc. I really appreciate it.
  11. Yea David, tired it all, and nothing but cellphone ringtones. Actually I came here as my last resort.
  12. Yea David, the Logo theme that plays behind their logo, like at the beginning of SW and other Century Fox movies. How can I get it as an audio file?
  13. Anyone has or can direct me to a website which has the glorious score that plays when 20th CF logo plays in the beginning of their movies ? Thanks
  14. In theaters I rarely see a movie more than twice, but since I have had a free passage card to watch as much movies as I want for a whole year with a guest if I wish, I saw Kingdom of Heaven 6 times and The Aviator 3 or 4 times. Now as far as DVD, I've seen so far: The Return of The King: 23 times La Vità è Bella (Life is Beautiful): 13 times Bad Boys: 7 times The Godfather 1&2: ~ 4 times
  15. I was reading how you guys were hamering down on Landon being young and all, so I'd like to know if he has made his first short or feature yet. I admire young talent and love to watch young directors emerge in the business. Thanks
  16. So piping out through SDI makes it 4:2:2, how then the HVX200 has 4:2:2 color sampling.. is it because it captures on P2 or external DTE? also would it be 4:2:2 with the canon capturing straight to a DTE instead of through SDI? thanks
  17. I thought you said in an earlier post that Canon output 4:2:0 like all HDV and the HVX200 only outputs 4:2:2.. sry but that kinda got me lost ! haha Well I guess guys for the film look as far as motion and colors, the HVX200 would be better, but then if the footage is going to undergo heavy post work than the canon is better since it pumps out uncompressed HD.. but I have a question, isn't the DVCPRO HD good enough for heavy post? I mean its datarate is 100mpbs, what is the datarate of the Canon's uncompressed HD via HD-SDI?
  18. So comapring both then, which one is better as far as resolution, image quality, and film look? looks like we're comparing DVCPRO HD the highest format the HVX200 delivers and the Canon HD format.. what do you guys say on both formats and cameras?
  19. Thanks for your info! is there any other HDV camera that captures HD at 4:2:2 in the market today beside the XL H1? does the XVH200 capture 10bit 4:2:2 as well? Matt, why would I need to go through all that hassle to capture uncompressed HD through the SDI port when I can do it via fire-wire to a firestore FS-4 or FS-100 drive or other DTE drives?

    SDI Output

Can anyone tell me what HD SDI output is about? If am capturing straight from the HVX200 to a Firestore drive, I'd be preserving quality instead of capturing to tape then from tape to the NLE-system? Is this canon's equivalent of such a thing, or how does it work? Thanks for the help!
  21. So basically, eventhough the canon is beleived to have a very "good" picture quality, in resolution it is still inferior to the other 24p progressive cameras.. whereas with canon we're getting half of that resolution since it is interlaced, and thus the lines per frame are inferior? I guess the only strong thing would be getting native HDV output from the camera
  22. any of you guys have shot on the Canon XL H1 ? I'd like to see some tests or if anyone can share his opinion after having used it.. also what do you guys (who have used and tested it) think about its workflow from production to post?
  23. Thanks Gordon, at school we never used it, and am shooting a music video next week on film, so I needed to know what it is called -- thanks again
  24. Hey guys, What is that tool that the director uses to look through in order to visualise a certain shot. Its that one where it is adjustable as far as switching to different lenses and seeing how the shot looks like. Thanks!
